Go find Jude Cole a band member here with his solo career..His album Start The Car is awesome. Look up the song Tell The Truth here on You Tube, it is also very awesome
This must be the album version, it has the 12-string electric guitar and the "pretty" chorus. Great song, great unheard band, but the single is better.
Great bit of power-pop nostalgia. I've always liked the Records since hearing this song in 1979 when completing my freshman year in high school and have all 3 albums, both the original vinyl and the expanded CD reissues on Will Birch's On The Beach label. I never saw this video, even on MTV when it was first starting out and airing many British and European music videos.
Absolutely Brilliant! The Records' first two LPs are as close to seventies power pop perfection as any you'll ever find-great players, genius tunes and huge energy. It's fucking criminal these guys never achieved the success they richly deserved...if only I had a buck for every time I've said that..PS love the early WTBS logo at the end, this probably aired in my hometown shortly after they changed call letters from WTCG, and aired music clips between Braves game reruns.
First heard of this band with a live concert that was somehow played on a San Francisco radio station...I was 18. Heard this song, "Affection Rejected" and "Insomnia." Bought the album ....(old story) and never heard of these guys. I look for them on Itunes so I can buy what I once owned...Great stuff...No one knew these guy
We covered this song in my youth in the states and the kids would always dance. I have always loved this song as my friends of the time. I just heard it in a muzak situation and it came back to me so I looked it up. The Records rock. Where are the kids now?
the bass player, phil brown is my great uncle. i'm only 13, but i've grown up with this music. it's a shame that there isn't more of the records all over youtube. :)
@ohaidorano well it's up to you then, perhaps, to keep this stuff alive.....the quality is there, it's a shame that some great groups somehow fall into the cracks, i guess that is just the way it is peace and good luck
Absolutely PURE CLASS! This band was so underrated, neglected and totally phucked by the industry. Pop brilliance at it's finest and how it's supposed to be....Thanks sooooo much!
I have this on the album; The Records play live. John Wicks has a spot on My Space. teenarama is another good cut from same LP. This guys were as good as Fingerprintz, The Keys. thanks to mudrocker for sharing
i saw this on a show in adelaide back in '79called music express. went out and bought the single and never heard it played on radio; and never saw the clip again. some people have shit for brains. what a great song. it hasn'tlost anything over the years. love it!!!!
Just the way they simultaniosly approaches the microphone at the first chorus! - the timing - - one righthanded, one lefthanded. Couldn't have been done any better!
Yes they did; they have even admitted this one to be a downright rip-off of that song. Nonetheless, this is much better and different from Eddie et al, they could - no offense - play guitar. ;-)
Records fans! Very cool to see that there were others like me that recognized how great this song was and ran out and bought their albums. Mt copy of SIB has a 4 song ep of covers, but I have to say my prized Record's works are my autographed Teenarama 45 when John Wicks played Nashville with 20/20 in '98 and Rock and Roll Love letter ep. Starry Eyes never sounds dated to me. They came to the US with the Jam in 79 or 80 but never got close to the South. DC was the closest they came to Georgia.
Yet another under-rated and overlooked band. I saw them supporting The Jam in a marquee in Saddlesworth. SIB is definitely one to rescue in the event of a fire.
Shades in Bed is an awesome album! Tried posting here a few times but it always seems to go pear shaped. Just want to let you & The Records know they're not forgotten and the music still affects. Shades in Bed? Give it a go....
Never heard of this band until I saw them support The Jam. They were brilliant! I got Shades in Bed and absolutely loved it. It was/is a power pop masterpiece! Still love it today. Their 2nd LP (oops.. nostalgia again) was also good but SIB remains one of my top 10 albums ever. Affection rejected.... Never!!!
hmmm this is a little different than the version i have.. is this the single version or an album cut? the version i have is shorter and has a different "bridge"..
@mudrocker The guitar bits on this version are so much better especially early in the song. This is not the album version. Ditto the bit at 2:43 when the drums stop except for cymbals. The harmonies and guitar parts are fantastic and to die for. This version is great.
I love The Records but you can't dismiss Cheap Trick, 20/20 or The Beat! Especially the Beat, almost every song on their self titled album could be hits.
Gower is really a guitarplayer with a dash to him. Seems to be a humourous fellah' too; he can't help but laughing at the kid's reaction outside the window as he is singbacking.
The drummer (and lyricist of this song) - also a fellow with a great sense of self-distant humour - has admitted: "in retrospect, it was probably not a good idea to fire him".
Was 17 when this came out, heard it once on the radio, and been looking for it since. Along with The Motors, "Love and Loneliness" , The Shoes "Tomorrow Night" and Australian band The Church, in 1982 with "The Unguarded Moment", were the quintescential powerpop songs. Look 'em up!
One of the best power pop songs ever! Very obviously inspired by The Hot Rod's song Do Anything You Wanna Do. The first 2 albums by The Records are great and worth getting your hands on.
You are correct...I could never get tired of "Do anything you wanna do"...that is the ultimate pop tune! This is up there in my top 10 powerpop tunes.
Bought this record when it came out and I still think it's one of the best pop records ever. The fact that it wasn't even a minor hit just makes a mockery of the singles chart.
I was hoping to see this again. I haven't seen this since 1979. At the time, I must have seen it at least four or five times.I am a big fan of The Records.
WOW WOW WOW!!This only the second time I have seen this clip. The first was back in 1979 which prompted me to buy this single. The first 45 I ever bought and was backed with Teenarama. As was mentioned before, the album version is slightly different. I think they deserved better, but the song tells tale of their forray into the music business.
There is two 1979 versions of this song; one EP version and another for the British album . The American album version though, was identical with the EP version. Dont ask me why...
