  • One of the first "videos" I ever saw. In Vancouver 1979.

  • Huw Gower co-wrote this song.

  • Huw Gower is the lead guitarist (pink jacket). No videos with Cole.

  • Jude Cole was in this band...WOW..They're GREAT!!Check out the song by Jude Cole called "Tell The Truth" it's awesome..I hope you look it up, you will enjoy.

  • Go find Jude Cole a band member here with his solo career..His album Start The Car is awesome. Look up the song Tell The Truth here on You Tube, it is also very awesome

  • Great Band Great song

  • I love the single version better than the album version but this vhs version has something to it that I really love.

  • This must be the album version, it has the 12-string electric guitar and the "pretty" chorus. Great song, great unheard band, but the single is better.

  • I wore out this album and the eight track before buying a third copy (which I still play) The greatest pop/rock group that barely anyone knew.

  • Where the hell do people get these clips! What's even more amazing is that they still have them after all these years. Thanks for posting!

  • Check them out backing Rachel Sweet on B-A-B-Y. Explains why the guitar solo on that was so good. Somewhere out there on you tube

  • This takes me back to being kid bak in the late 70's early 80's. Great song.

  • one of the most perfect songs ever recorded..

  • Great song. shame the audio is poor quality but thanks for posting anyway.

  • love live power pop!

  • Great bit of power-pop nostalgia. I've always liked the Records since hearing this song in 1979 when completing my freshman year in high school and have all 3 albums, both the original vinyl and the expanded CD reissues on Will Birch's On The Beach label. I never saw this video, even on MTV when it was first starting out and airing many British and European music videos.

  • That was fabulous! Loved these guys when I was a kid!

  • Absolutely Brilliant! The Records' first two LPs are as close to seventies power pop perfection as any you'll ever find-great players, genius tunes and huge energy. It's fucking criminal these guys never achieved the success they richly deserved...if only I had a buck for every time I've said that..PS love the early WTBS logo at the end, this probably aired in my hometown shortly after they changed call letters from WTCG, and aired music clips between Braves game reruns.

  • They fucking ROCK.

  • AWESOME.. Memories Memories. Thank You For This.!

  • it's pretty funny how much of a ripoff this song is of eddie and the hotrods- do anything you wanna do

  • @rhodesia789

    i don't hear it.

  • WOW..! Brings Back Memories..!

  • And another great song from my sunny windy day of pain. I just love this song.

  • love this song, anybody have any other suggestions for The Records songs I should listen to next

  • Pretty Pop

(nice guitar duel, one it's hard toforget).

I have ths ep since the good old days when Virgin Records were just a pair of stores in London Town!

  • First heard of this band with a live concert that was somehow played on a San Francisco radio station...I was 18. Heard this song, "Affection Rejected" and "Insomnia." Bought the album ....(old story) and never heard of these guys. I look for them on Itunes so I can buy what I once owned...Great stuff...No one knew these guy

  • We covered this song in my youth in the states and the kids would always dance. I have always loved this song as my friends of the time. I just heard it in a muzak situation and it came back to me so I looked it up. The Records rock. Where are the kids now?

  • Im proud to say that I seen both the records and the cars in central park '78 or '79 it was my first concert I was 15 great bands

  • the bass player, phil brown is my great uncle. i'm only 13, but i've grown up with this music. it's a shame that there isn't more of the records all over youtube. :)

  • @ohaidorano see if you can get help to put some up... I know I would love it!

  • @ohaidorano

Bless you child. You have outstanding musical genes. You have a responsibility now. Use them well!

  • @ohaidorano the bass was really the heart in this band!

  • @ohaidorano well it's up to you then, perhaps, to keep this stuff alive.....the quality is there, it's a shame that some great groups somehow fall into the cracks, i guess that is just the way it is peace and good luck

  • I saw them open for Joe Jackson in NJ and they were better than him - this is a great song!

  • This has always been the definitive power pop song for me.

  • Great to hear this after something like 30 years. Used to LOVE this song!!!! Thanks for posting!

  • Absolutely PURE CLASS! This band was so underrated, neglected and totally phucked by the industry. Pop brilliance at it's finest and how it's supposed to be....Thanks sooooo much!

  • @orweller3 this song and the Jags 'I Got Your Number" the two most overlooked gems I can think of

  • Loves me some power pop - there is none better than this.

  • Great band.

  • I have this on the album; The Records play live. John Wicks has a spot on My Space. teenarama is another good cut from same LP. This guys were as good as Fingerprintz, The Keys. thanks to mudrocker for sharing

  • I prefer Crashes but hey thats just me!

  • Me,too-Jude Cole was great for The Records (as well as Huw Gower).

    Viva Crashes!!

  • Koje boje su vam oči?

  • This always reminded me of Do Anything You Wanna Do by Eddie & The Hot Rods.

  • haha no kidding both amazing bands'

  • The perfect power pop song. Give up: you. can't. do. better.

  • Glorious pop music - the cream of New Wave.

  • 18 years old, and my dad picked up their greatest hits a coupla years ago. I must be the only person younger than 40 who's ever heard of this band.

  • look around, only real classic stands the test of time.

  • Too Much Joy

  • Too Much Joy's cover's great as well.

  • i saw this on a show in adelaide back in '79called music express. went out and bought the single and never heard it played on radio; and never saw the clip again. some people have shit for brains. what a great song. it hasn'tlost anything over the years. love it!!!!

  • Yep...I think The Muses in Regent Arcade were the only ones to stock it at the time...well that's where I got mine.

  • Thanks for posting. Another great power pop song.

Also check out Badfinger, Cheap Trick, The Shoes, The Jam and Dwight Twilley's I'm on Fire.

  • Just the way they simultaniosly approaches the microphone at the first chorus! - the timing - - one righthanded, one lefthanded. Couldn't have been done any better!

  • No offense, yet I guess they must've liked "DO ANYTHING YOU WANNA DO" by Eddie & the Hot Rods alot ;)

  • Yes they did; they have even admitted this one to be a downright rip-off of that song. Nonetheless, this is much better and different from Eddie et al, they could - no offense - play guitar. ;-)

  • we had no time for cocktails or working up a tan the boys have all been spoken to the rit has hit the fan!!!!!!!!! classic!!!

  • this song rules!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Records fans! Very cool to see that there were others like me that recognized how great this song was and ran out and bought their albums. Mt copy of SIB has a 4 song ep of covers, but I have to say my prized Record's works are my autographed Teenarama 45 when John Wicks played Nashville with 20/20 in '98 and Rock and Roll Love letter ep. Starry Eyes never sounds dated to me. They came to the US with the Jam in 79 or 80 but never got close to the South. DC was the closest they came to Georgia.

  • I remember when this video first came out, it was before mtv. What a great song....

    3:42 :)

  • Fantastic harmonies and guitar work. Great stuff.

  • Yet another under-rated and overlooked band. I saw them supporting The Jam in a marquee in Saddlesworth. SIB is definitely one to rescue in the event of a fire.

  • Shades in Bed is an awesome album! Tried posting here a few times but it always seems to go pear shaped. Just want to let you & The Records know they're not forgotten and the music still affects. Shades in Bed? Give it a go....

  • Never heard of this band until I saw them support The Jam. They were brilliant! I got Shades in Bed and absolutely loved it. It was/is a power pop masterpiece! Still love it today. Their 2nd LP (oops.. nostalgia again) was also good but SIB remains one of my top 10 albums ever. Affection rejected.... Never!!!

  • Aww... bless. I really do love this track.

  • i have the prized (at least in so cal)Chardon square 7 inch of the cover of this.. quite a "hit " in the late 80's with the orange county mod set..

  • hmmm this is a little different than the version i have.. is this the single version or an album cut? the version i have is shorter and has a different "bridge"..

  • i think this is the polished up album version

  • @mudrocker The guitar bits on this version are so much better especially early in the song. This is not the album version. Ditto the bit at 2:43 when the drums stop except for cymbals. The harmonies and guitar parts are fantastic and to die for. This version is great.

  • I love The Records but you can't dismiss Cheap Trick, 20/20 or The Beat! Especially the Beat, almost every song on their self titled album could be hits.

  • Gower is really a guitarplayer with a dash to him. Seems to be a humourous fellah' too; he can't help but laughing at the kid's reaction outside the window as he is singbacking.

The drummer (and lyricist of this song) - also a fellow with a great sense of self-distant humour - has admitted: "in retrospect, it was probably not a good idea to fire him".

  • I agrree, with the last. Best powerpop ever.

Was 17 when this came out, heard it once on the radio, and been looking for it since. Along with The Motors, "Love and Loneliness" , The Shoes "Tomorrow Night" and Australian band The Church, in 1982 with "The Unguarded Moment", were the quintescential powerpop songs. Look 'em up!

  • One of the best power pop songs ever! Very obviously inspired by The Hot Rod's song Do Anything You Wanna Do. The first 2 albums by The Records are great and worth getting your hands on.

  • You are correct...I could never get tired of "Do anything you wanna do"...that is the ultimate pop tune! This is up there in my top 10 powerpop tunes.

  • Bought this record when it came out and I still think it's one of the best pop records ever. The fact that it wasn't even a minor hit just makes a mockery of the singles chart.

  • Wow!!!!!!!

I was hoping to see this again. I haven't seen this since 1979. At the time, I must have seen it at least four or five times.I am a big fan of The Records.

    Kick ass power pop :)

  • Power pop seemed to be more a Stateside thing but this side is as good as it gets--The Records rule and this song is medicine--Great post!

  • That is Twiggy doing the introduction. It is from a great show in the late 70's called "Jukebox".

  • i thought it was britt ekland !

  • You're right it is Brit Ekland.

  • No it is not Ekland!

  • No, Ekland was slightly "bustier"...

  • @webstavie I Thought it was the Shake n Vac Lady....

  • Great great great.

  • The Records! Thanks for posting this. One of my all time faves! Anything from Crashes floating around out there?

  • WOW WOW WOW!!This only the second time I have seen this clip. The first was back in 1979 which prompted me to buy this single. The first 45 I ever bought and was backed with Teenarama. As was mentioned before, the album version is slightly different. I think they deserved better, but the song tells tale of their forray into the music business.

  • Sorry after digging out the old single the B side of Starry Eyes is "Paint Her Face".

  • Awesome! The Records rule.

  • Yeah man, the fans are rounding up!

  • la mejor cancion pop de la historia

  • I like this version better than the one on the album. It's a lot more dynamic, with a much more complex arrangement.

  • There is two 1979 versions of this song; one EP version and another for the British album . The American album version though, was identical with the EP version. Dont ask me why...

  • Thanks for posting this fine, fine piece of music, Mudrocker!

  • Thanks for posting this fine, fine piece of music, Mudrocker!

  • "While you were up for grabs

we were stranded in the British isles"

There seems an added guitar and harmony vocals on this version, and there seems to be an added verse at the end!

    Sounds live!

  • For the "record", the first line is:

"While you were lost in France,

We were stranded in the British Isles."

    Great tune!

  • "Good stuff" is at most the middle name; this is a very, very fine tune. I'm grateful to finaly have got to see this old video. An old favourite. Indeed it is./Randall

  • 1979-non disco good stuff.

    BTW- Disco still sucks!

Saw this Band in 70-80 at the Paradise..great show

  • right on mudrocker, thanks for posting this vid, man. flash from the past, gotta love it

  • Have you heard the Methadones from Chicago do a cover of this??? I really think they did it ok...the wife can't stand it...hahahaha

  • This is one of the greatest pop songs of all time...perfect.

  • Glad this one is back..anyone got a "girls that don't exist" vid out there?

  • Thanks very much for posting this. I too have been hoping that someone would post it eventually. A classic powerpop song and a great clip!

  • Been looking for this video a long time. Do you know if it is available for sale anywhere? Thanks for posting it.
