  • best version of riverdance to date, still gives me the goosebumps!

  • celtic pride ......

  • This gives me shivers every time I watch it...

  • @OESaddict actually, this was the intermission act. Probably performed just before the results were revealed.

  • Watch this song/dance many times. Went te several performances of Riverdance in the Netherlands.Everytime: fantastic.

  • Whatever you think of Michael Flatley, Jean Butler or Irish Dancing, you have to agree that this interval act literally stopped everyone in their tracks when it was first shown. It brought Irish dancing a new lot of fans and spawned a host of Irish Dancing shows. I love it [- it's a skilled piece of work and all those years on still gives me goosebumps.

  • Jean Butler and Michael Flatley were not only the first but they were truely the best in my opinion, gives me goose bumps! x

  • Damn ! This is great !

  • did they win that year?

    They should'ave

  • riverdance was the interval act not an entry and i dont know who won!

  • @ craigholme22: I think that half the world totally forgot who won... and wanted to know more about Riverdance ;)

  • Ireland came 1st that year and also hosted. they won 3 times in a row

  • This was not an act.

It was the interval act as the voting was counting..

    Ireland hosted in 1993

Niamh Kavaghna came 1st in 1993..

So Ireland won and hosted on the same year and Ireland won AGAIN in 1994..

So then Ireland has an amazing 6 eurovision wins.. but 2 years later in 1996 Ireland won again now having 7 wins..

    1970 - 1996 :D

Maybe IReland will win again in Oslo, It seems to be luck for the Irish as Ireland won in Norway in 1996..

Ireland could win in Norway again in 2010

  • This is why ireland RULE.gr8 song and we r da shit. makes me proud 2 be irish.go on da flatley

  • Eire go deo!

  • this auld rubbish is played out. go watch some sean-nos step dancing. a guy step dancing on top of a porter barrell back in wesport at a festival a year ago.!

  • Best Eurovision moment ever and a truly fantastic routine. Will never tire of watching this! :o)

  • oh man its been ages since i saw this. good stuff. i think my legs wouldve been all tangled up had i attempted this.

  • Is aoibinn liom e. Sin ceann de na cuiseannna a bhfuil me an-bhroduil as a bheith i m'Eireannach.

Sorry about the lack of "fadas" but I just don't know how to get them on the computer!

  • Bhuel, is cuma. Táim cinnte go bhfuil tú ag déanamh do SHEACHT NDÍCHEALL!!!

Mar sin, mar a dúirt mé cheana, caithfidh tú AltGr a úsáid chun an fada a fháil. Sin sin.

Ar aon nós, cén chaoi ina bhfuil tú? Ag staidéar go dian?

  • Bhuel,go raibh maith agat ach dún do chlab nó brisfidh mé do phus!

Sea, táim go maith,buíochas le Dia,agus leat féin?

  • Chun an fhírinne a rá leatsa, nílim go maith ar chor ar bith. Táim tuirseach ach ní dhearna mé FAIC inniu. Ach, sin sin. Táim ag dul go Gaillimh anois dé hAoine agus mar sin tá súil agam go mbainfidh mé tatineamh as an gcóisir ann.

  • Ni dhearna me aon rud ach oiread inniu. Nil aon fadas ar riomhaire Sorcha!ta altgr briste!

  • Mo Dhia. Anois, ar bhain tú taitneamh as an mbialann? An raibh sí go deas?

Sin grannmhar, táim cinnte go bhfuil daoine ag féachaint ar na teachtareachtaí seo agus ag smaoineamh..."wtf?".

tríthí - sin lol as Gaeilge.

  • Tá sé ana go hailain

    Is maith liom

  • Wow That Was Amazing!

    i love the music too

  • WOW, I have been a fan of this since it first came out. Jean Bulter and Michael Flatley for me are the original and best. I could watch this over and over, their talent and the beautiful music always brings a tear to my eye.

  • the language is gaelic

  • hardly

  • I think he meant the TV voiceover at the end was Dutch, rather than Riverdance.

  • Talk about skill - these guys blow me away!

  • Yea people laugh and make a joke about it, flaling their legs around put the skill and precision that goes into it is just amazing, cant imagine how hard it was to get that so perfect!! Just brilliant!!!

  • Wow.. just... wow.

  • Amazing!!!!

  • I'm doing this for a concert. Bill Whelan did such a good job writing this.

  • i played this piece with a brass band in the royal albert hall...best experience of my life

  • It wasn't in the Point theatre it was in Millstreet Arena in Cork!

  • It was in the Point - the previous year was Millstreet.

  • The only language I know of that is so close to English is German.

  • It's Dutch actually. The presenter says: "Well, I don't think I've said too much. Standing ovation here in the Point Theater for these dancers, for Jean Butler and Michael Flatley, for choir Anuna and of course for Bill Whelan because he wrote this piece."

  • still just fantastic even all these years later.

  • WOW!!! this is awesome!!

  • Well, the show sucks ass to begin with. I was wooden and stiff just watching it.

  • I hate the way they've filmed this! This is powerful and enchanting, I don't want to see their tapping feet in a camrearoll, I want to see it from front view all the time!

Good, that's got to be the most annoying thing about Eurovision song contest, they always fuck things up with the cameras!

  • 1994 real winner is Riverdance!

  • Is it Katie McMahon on solo?

  • slap on the auld riverdance album?

  • Michael Flatley, is like a roster...such a showoff... butextremely good of course.. :)

  • goosebumps!!!

  • i've been looking for this song everywhere for about two years..and it was always in my head...finally!

  • I saw Lord of the Dance live which was spectacular but this is magic! It gives me physical goosebumps and leaves me in tears at 5mins 15 seconds!

    Amazing

  • Love the singing at the start, absolutly brilliant stuff all round. Proud to be Irish.

  • Amazingly beautiful dance..I do love it. Although, at the moment I'm just here for Anuna. I can't get enough of Anuna.

  • I dont give a shit bout where flatly is from the dance is 100% Irish and thats what im proud of.

  • Do you know if they'll be in Italy next year?

  • Love it! Half Irish and half English and proud :-)

  • michael fltley and jean butler is 1 of the many reasons im sooo proud to be irish!!!!!xxx

  • I loove Riverdance <3 I was lucky enough to see them live too. I sooo want to see the show again, it was amazing!

  • Poetry in motion.

  • Same here, i must have been twelve and i remember i was in awe.. couldnt speak because it simply made me tear up. Still does acyually. My dad and i spoke about it for weeks and he found the dvd of riverdance soemwhere and we have seen it many times after that.

  • I love...RIVERDANCE...Who is with me?...G`Day from OZ!!!

  • No one ever remembers this lovely clear voice, do they?

  • the best jus best ever michael flatley u sxc legend!!

  • Classic eurovision! Bring back the jury voting!!!

  • it 09 they actually are

  • 5 from 5 Points goes to: RIVERDANCE! Great Show!

  • why do they call it riverdance i wonder

  • same here! fuckin love this clip i remember seein it on the eurovision when i was young! luv it!

  • sensational!

  • In one word "absolutely brilliant"

  • thats two numbnuts :P

  • Even Terry Wogan didn't do his usual mocking with this. A year later Riverdance was everywhere and it got a bit annoying but having not seen it for a while you forget how amazing this performance was.

  • I remember watching it, in the meanwhile so many years ago. But I remember very well, that all other performances of this song contest an the voting for the countries was not anymore interisting after having seen this great performance. This was one of the moments you will never forget in your live.

  • I'm missing a bit, the part where they do a big mexican wave of stamps in a line at the end?

  • I Remember watching this at home too. Ian Dempsey kept saying "Whatever you do, dont miss the interval". How right he was. 14 years and still this has to be the most beautiful piece of music and dance ever. Hard to keep a dry eye.

  • actually theres less of the wigs these days, i went and saw it in the Gaiety, Dublin only 2 weeks ago and they all had straight hair!

i have to agree that the costumes have become a bit too modern and the original outfits were better.

i thought it was AMAZING tho the Gaiety stage is very small so its best to see it on a bigger stage [like the Point Theatre] for full impact.

  • What a pity Irish dancing has gone from this to a tacky beauty pagaent, with orange fake tan and huge, ridiculous wigs....

  • well technically in the beginning, michael flatley was frowned upon in the beginning because of his style of dancing (what with the use of his arms and such) it was pretty much a tacky beauty pagent from the start.(even moreso nowadays) but this was something completely new as far as irish dancing was concerned.

  • Wow, I am so happy to find this!! I was searching all over and it seems that very few versions of this are out there. Thanks for posting it. When I was a kid I couldn't get ENOUGH of this beautiful song by Anuna. And those dancing feet were (and are) downright mesmerizing!

  • Doesn't Jean look like a high schooler in this? She just looks a bit younger than in the next performance. :]

  • @Mysticmilotic: She was probably fresh out of high school then, maybe 19 or 20 years old? She does look very young here.

  • Every finger is touching and searching,

    Until your secrets come out,

In the dance, as it endlessly circles,

I linger close to your mouth.

I am living to nourish you, cherish you,

I am pulsing the blood in your veins,

Feel the magic and power of surrender,

    To life. Uisce Beatha

  • Hear my cry,

In my hungering search for you,

Taste my breath on the wind,

See the sky as it mirrors my colours,

    Hints and whispers begin.

I am living to nourish you, cherish you,

I am pulsing the blood in your veins,

Feel the magic and power of surrender,

    To life. Uisce Beatha

  • everytime i watch this i feel so proud to be irish

  • same!

  • 28 taps a second

  • look at it this way now when they get up to the point when they are all in one huge line if one of the is even a second off its all ruined!

  • Is Michael Flatley using tap shoes?

  • No they're just extremely jacked hard shoes.

  • I'm sure he did cry at some stage in his life.

  • i am only quarter irish but this skill makes me embrace my irish heritage even more ! this is one of the videos that inspired me to irish dance

  • DID YOU KNOW!?!

That the metal on Michael Flatley's shoes are made from the same substance NASA uses to build their space shuttles with.

  • brilliant Ireland 1994

props to you from the US, wicked awesome

  • OMG!!!I am an Australian and I must say to the Irish people... how your hearts must be swelling with absolute pride with this brilliant incedible dancing...It is sending chills down my spine just watching it...onya Ireland!!!G`Day from OZ!!!

  • is that true the commentator from England almost cried?

  • no.

  • i've heard that

  • 18 weeks at no.1 in Ireland and the best Eurovision interval act ever.

  • This is the defining moment of the 90's in Ireland, the whole nation swelled with pride during this incredible performance.

  • makes me proud to be irish, so amazing

  • Holy Crap!

  • so very proud of this

  • Yes, it is very nice

  • When the term 'Beautiful' is employed to describe "Riverdance" it is a redundant term. Riverdance is BEAUTY ! Riverdance is beyond beauty.

If your hair isn't standing on end, and if you're not weeping at this video, then check to see if you've still got a pulse. You may be dead. Long live Riverdance. Long live The Irish - the greatest and most talented people pound for pound on Earth.

  • makes me proud to wear shoes

  • makes me proud to be gay

  • Wonderful to see this again....makes me proud to be Irish!

  • This performance changed Irish dancing...quality!

  • Truly inspiring music and dance!

  • wow only re- fell in love with this...jaysus its powerful!

  • When Jean Butler danced with Michael Flatley, it was the only time when I looked at the woman, not the man.

  • wow look at that reception!!

  • amazing <3

  • will never lose its WOW factor.always a plesure to watch

  • I watched this live when I used to live in England, and I thought, "Oh, yawn - another Eurovision time-filler!" By the time it was over I was speechless, and have been a Flatley addict ever since!

  • awe inspiring, shivers, goosebumps, pride...

  • I love being Irish! wooooop

  • Beautiful... !

  • dude

  • Just as incredible all these years later.

  • michael flatley can tap dance the 40 yard dash in 4.2 seconds.

  • Wow... the legs.. they move so fast - is that humanely possible?

  • Ah its fucking great to be Irish!!!!!!!!

  • yes - it was in 1994 anyway.

  • this made me proud to be irish, but flatley turned into an asshole

  • this makes me proud to be irish, but flatley turned into an asshole

  • aww this made me cry!! u forget what a beautiful piece this is, it makes me so proud of my country

  • I cried to =] It's so beautiful it's hard not to cry. So proud to be Irish...

  • Yes - the two American leads make me proud to be Irish too.

  • Flatley is not entirly American. His parents are Irish and came to America!

  • brezairola just because Jean and Michael were born in the US doesn't make this performance any less Irish,,, thats like eating sushi and someone saying I love Japanese food, and you replying no the chef is from America, thats American food! This makes me proud to be IRISH!

  • an enlightening response 'brutaltruth,' please feel free to impart your wisdom often as it is truly delightful!

  • Yeah. You are right of course. Maybe. Don't care.

  • Horray for Dustin. I'm so proud he is an Irish turkey puppet.

  • Its not about where they were born........Its about the blood thats inside them..........Green Blood!!!!!!

  • I love it, but the cameraman's a dumbass ... you NEVER let the camera leave the feet & legs entirely when filming Irish dance.

  • Still fantastic

  • My sisters were Irish dancers (the trad stuff trad dresses and all) and when I was a kid I used to be bored to tears(as young lads are) when the mother made us watch them so when I saw this coming on I thought Dear God No!! The whole world is going to see our Irish dancing and think we're insane!!! Turned out I was wrong, they were absolutely amazing and I think alot of people in Ireland were very proud of this.

  • I remember seeing this on the eurovision the day it was broadcast, we sat there stunned at this fantastic piece of entertainment, and it still gives me chills to watch it (even though I can't stand MF these days).

  • Ireland totally rocked Europe with this. It's crazy how musically talented Ireland is.

  • Makes me proud to be Irish...

  • You know, you forget how groundbreaking and new this was - 'Riverdance' has become such a cliché:

This was a moment to be Irish.

  • I got chills

  • Wat prachtig...

  • What is the name of last dance (which starts at 4th minute)?

  • That is a pretty wild piece of music. In an uncommon meter, I think... can't tell exactly... maybe 7/8 time or something like that. The dance is choreographed for that number, and is not a "Traditional" Irish dance (like jig, reel, hornpipe etc.). It uses Irish hard shoe technique -- but it doesn't fall neatly into any trad. Irish dance category. It is very cool though. At least that is my educated guess. Don't take it as gospel.

  • the name i believe when i looked it up is actually "riverdance (cloudsong" ....

  • Flatley left the show bec he wanted the show to center more on him and marginalise Jean. When Dunne came in,there was better balance bet the leads.Besides,Jean is better on the eyes than Flatley, not that Flatley fans would ever appreciate her that way.

  • Jean is the best lead, wish I could have seen her live. Wonder how tall she is.

  • Hard to beat this.

  • Jean Butler boring ?? My god, we're in the presence of the heathen.

  • I always get chills when i watch this!

  • I love cloud song

  • I love jean's hair

  • Wow! Michael Flatley BEFORE his ego struck, I almost like him in this!

  • hillarious...simply hillarious...

  • hey gemini1904, go fuck yourself.

  • First of all, watch ur mouth. I happen to love Irish dancing, choirs, Celtic Woman, so what are you telling me that for.I did not see u reply to Xerxes.I did laugh, I think that he got a little arrogant, still great, but a little arrogant, They work and a great as a team, not just him.

They are ALL great, even the singers, not just him, he is great just as they are. Nothing wrong with what I said, u just commented on ur assumption, didnt say I didnt like them or anything negative.Thats just u.

  • gemini1904, do you mean you were commenting as a reply to someone else? In your comment where you said: 'Thats hilarious.'? If so, I'm very sorry!! I thought you were saying you thought Riverdance was hilarious!

  • No I meant that to their comment. Anyways, I wish I knew what this song is called, I know (remember ) the words from when it was shown on tv a lot, but I do not know the song, oh well, just google it I guess.

  • The song is Riverdance by Bill Whelan. If you get nothing under that, try Cloudsong by Bill Whelan.

  • Thats it! Thats it! Cloud Song! Sorry, a little too excited, I love this song!

  • Me too, glad to help!

  • Its a very hackneyed phrase but this performance is pure magic. It is beyond beauty and surpasses any performance of dance that I've ever seen. Unforgettable. Only the Irish could have pulled this off.

  • I agree, I can't put it in words, but this was just pure magic...

  • lord of the dance= eh

    Riverdance= YAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • You KNOW no one saw that climactic finale coming! :-D

  • Ah, cool! A clear version of the original broadcast!

  • Now this is the performance i remember with them. This is outstanding and was a shock to see for the first time.

  • Outstanding. It was the breakthrough of Riverdance.
