ALOT of people seem to think Hyenas are ugly and I don't seen why, if they are ugly then there are alot of dogs that are ugly too. Are you kidding me? Caracals ARE threatening. It's been proven many times. That jaw of a Caracal can crush something that's over 170 pounds. A Caracal can't do a meaningful damage on a Hyena? When I was hunting in Africa, I shot a hyena with my H&K . I then secured a 100' chain to the back of my landrover and secured the hyena to the end of it. I drove in a three mile loop for about a half hour and sure enough I had a group of young lions trying to grab the thing off the chain. It was like fishing. They enjoyed themselves for two hours trying to tear that thing apart on the run. Priceless.

@mangoliouskiwi They actually make excelent pets, it's just that the people have common knowledge about cats that they are untammable unlike dogs and that the larger they are, the more dangerous they are, but if they are raised from the start on a human hand, the danger they might pose will be even less than that of a domestic trained dog.
It's just about experience.

yea.. what people don't realize is that hyenas usually eat their own kills and scavenge less than even lions. (lions are probably most often the 'thieves' of the african grasslands)

@1980Triumph what animals actually hunt and eat baby hyena's. I know Lions just kill hyena's and their young for territorial purposes and I am pretty sure they don't or rarely eat them. I'm getting at one possible point. They hyena doesn't have nearly the daily threat from large predators that cats such as the Caracal, Serval or Cheetah. Is this possible?

Hyenas are ugly creatures with bad and annoying personality, that eat usually dead bodies and steal from others what they earned in a lot of effort;
Cats on the other hand are beautiful noble creatures, that are known to defend their babies no matter what.

@1980Triumph That's because hyenas are repugnant pack animals likened to human gangs which cannot fight and stand their ground on their own, but rather gang up and outnumber their opponents like cowards.
They're also ugly as hell and have no endearing qualities that would make one desireable as a pet. However stories abound of even big cats that made great civilized pets, even though they may be dangerous.

Were they the size of Lions they would be on their own and would dominate Africa, however to compete with animals like Lions and even Leopards they are forced to use team work to be successful. And they aren't ugly, I find they look better then alot of dog species. Im not saying the Caracal will always win nor am I saying the Hyena will. Its merely who gets the advantage. Those hyena left because they got their feed & knew the Caracal was very peeved, to the point where she would give no mercy. So being a smart animal, they left. As a group naturally the number of the Hyena would win, but still even as there were 3 of them, they left her alone because even with 3, an angered mother cat could tear shreds off them, then they risk injury & infection & death.

Please read what I said before you make a comment. I said she could tear shreds off them (injure), not tear them to shreds (kill). How else do you explain the hyena's walking away? how about: they felt "generous" or maybe they "couldn't be bothered to eat again". I hate to tell you animals don't think like that. They think "hmm can I kill without getting injured? Will my injury be fatal or minimal? How hungry am I really? Is it worth the risk" So here they chose it was safer not to attack.

People need to understand that the bite of an animal doesnt count for a win (Lion vs hyena - the lion will always win). A bite from a hyena wont win against the agilty, claws & bite of the Caracal. No animal will risk the chance of a fatal injury. Caracals are quick killers (throat, neck) hyenas are quick feeders. Their fight would be fair but they wouldnt risk it. Theyre not stupid. Like all cats, the Caracals target is the eyes so why would a hyena take the chance of losing its sight and die?

Hyena's jaws are incredibly strong, one of the strongest bites there are with land mammals.
And they do run off single lions or a couple of lions, but not a pride. Nobody f--ks with a pride of lions because of brute strength and numbers...
Although I have seen 15-20 heyenas take on three male lions and kill them, seemingly for sport, on TV once. It was during a drought.

ah m8, hyena's "can" kill a lion in 1 mere bite, they have the strongest jaws and bite of all those things out there in africa (crocodiles might match up... i dont remember).

....actually, crocodiles and hippos have the strongest bite forces, though proportionately, that honor goes to the hyena. but, they cannot kill a lion with one bite. i`ve seen lion-hyena confrontations, many times, where the hyenas managed to bite to big cats many times, yet, the lion was still breathing, and well. also, hyenas are not cowards.
like any other carnivore, they are wary of any animal which stands it`s ground.
