Great song for todays standards, especially wiht all the bullying gettig to the extremes these days.....I barely remember the movie version, except for one part where one witch is wearing a 7 carrot ring and Mama Cass eats it...
for all you misfits out there--here is your song---that includes me. "I'd rather be different than be the same". Love you Cass--you are singing in the stars.
I Agree whole-Heartedly that being different, whether it's being gay or a different race or whatever doesn't make you worse. If anything, it makes you better!
I saw this in the movie ("Puffnstuff") when it was first released in 1970. I was only 6 years old, but when I heard her voice I was completely captivated, and in my own way understood the sentiment of the words. It was this very song that made me realize I was born a musical creature and would sing and create music for the rest of my life. I will never forget how I felt leaving the theater that day.
Cass Elliot couldn't have performed a more fitting song than this one.Not only that, but I can relate to these lyrics because i grew up different and still am in many regards. It's not something you embrace overnight.
I did. I'm 19 but I got into this older music from the 1960's around the time the Beatles "1" compilation came out. I learned about the Mamas and the Papas and became interested in their music. I was 9-10 years old. But I can't remember when, probably when I was sick or at home I saw The New Scooby Doo Movies and there was Mama Cass! I thought "Seriously. Mama Cass running a candy factory?"
If Cass had her own candy, I'd buy it lol. RIP Cass.
@Jethrofinger ive seen this when i was younger (me being 23) and i never forgot this song it was awesome. then i found myself looking back to what my mom listened to and its ALOT better than the crap kids liten to these days... fleetwood mac, begees, mamas and the papas, carole king, simon and garfunkle and carly simon. great and true artists
Indeed. I love the Beatles, Stones, Who, Pink Floyd, Doors, Thin Lizzy, Zeppelin, Kiss, and a whole lot more. I prefer classic rock but I'd let the Mamas and the Papas fit in as folk rock. Fleetwood Mac are good as well, but I'm a little more interested in the Peter Green era lol. Rumours is amazing, BTW.
@bearcub410 LOL. I never really watched this show. It was just before my time (haha), but I remember Mama Cass singing some song. I can't believe I found it, PLUS to hear the lyrics! Deff a gay anthem. I posted it on FB and dedicated it to all the little Monsters. Glad I wasn't the only one who felt the same. Thanks for your comment!
I have so missed this song.... Growing up gay in the country of Australia, it was like a power anthem that whenever I was bullied or picked on, I would listen to this (as I had the album) and it would make me feel great about myself. Thank-you so much for posting this -3

it's so annoying that it's out of sync. Otherwise it's perfect
