Haven't played SH yet. I assume you're using G7 torpedoes - contact or magnetic fuses? No escorts? Well played, and incredible graphics. @glenfruin Sigh. Read the description - IT'S.... FROM... A... COMPUTER.... GAME. It's meant for fans of the game. There is no other meaning. Read through some of my other comment for any further information.
@IRONxMortlock I'm shocked that people still give you flak about this!! READ THE DISCRIPTION PEOPLE!!!! bring on some mre vids iron, they rock!! did you check out the new SH5 yet?
@JeffClancy1966 - yeah but I guess that's the internet for you. I don't think my user name helps in this situation either. People probably see "IRONx" and think it means Iron Cross. It's actually a clan tag for a online community I used to be a part of called the Iron Brigade.
@glenfruin humm ist a pc game you stupid moron , hey fuckface salute to the trillion fags that died in hood brit scum we will get you sooner or later , fuck your shit little island russia rules hahaha
I have no real problem with this concept - wargamers refight all the old battles that occurred throughout history daily and no-one dies and real historical events don't change. But my one fear with things like this is that schools teach so little history these days (by design?) that so many youngsters see stuff on places like YouTube and believe it to be true. Maybe qualifying the true events in the info at the top of the page would stop old farts like me whinging! :-) Still, very well done.
@Factnotfictionpeople - Good point. I do state that it's from a computer game in the description but that still doesn't stop people from taking it way too seriously. It was really only meant for other players of the game. I never expected it to get this many views.
@davidrodgersNJ - It's Silent Hunter 3 with the GWX modification. It still ranks as one of my all time favourite games. If you buy it, be sure to also get the GWX mod from subsim.com. The folks there will help you learn how to play.
i hated SH 2 and 5, never played 1 or 4 but love 3.....
one mission i was in a type VII, i had 3 torpedos left, but had no situational wareness and so when i raised my periscope i fired at 3 destroyers, i then went to external view and realised i somehow managed to stumble into the very middle of a BATTLEFLEET and barely 500m away was a big juicy carrier...... words cannot express how i felt............. or maybe they can $%#$^@$ #$%%@ #$%#$
Keep up the good hunting, herr kaleun,I have SH3 and am current reeking havok on the british shipping lanes.Been sinking allied shipping since 2005! and LOVING IT!!!
@UKRod Have you lost your mind! It was stated in the info box that this is a game! Can you not dissern between reality and fantasy! You know ther're padded rooms with your name on it,why don't you do us all a favor and find it. 25 years of service in a military branch and you have nothing more than a childs IQ. Do you know WW2 is over and allied with us in nato. So mabe calling your allies kruats and twats is a little uncalled for? huh rodney boy.
Hi UkRod, I'm sorry that you have taken offence, it was definitely not the intention of this video to dishonour the service of the sailors of the HMS Rodney. As you are well aware, the HMS Rodney survived the horrors of combat and thankfully went to a peaceful grave without her crew. This video is intended for other SH3 players who can appreciate the in game challenges of "sinking" a ship of this calibre in a Type II U-boat using GWX. There's nothing more to it.
My vid however has nothing to do with reality; it's screenshots from a computer game. One of the best parts of these kinds of games is that one can toy with idea of changing history.
Yeah, just too much work to make really good video footage (and my PC at the time crapped its pants whenever I ran fraps!). Stills are OK though, they help give it an old school atmosphere. I'm really going to have to put together some of my SH4 footage sometime.
This fellow clearly turned off historical torpedoes in his game.
In September, 1939, HMS Nelson (Rodney's sister) was set upon by a Type II U-Boat. which hit it with two torpedoes, neither of which went off. On board was the head of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill. Talk about a chance to change history!
Indeed! For the record, GWX simulates historical torps but I got lucky this time around. There were plenty of other patrols where that wasn't the case however!
Most WW2 battleships had "soft" bows and somewhat soft sterns. Rodney was typical, and in the Med she took a torpedo in the bow that flooded a great deal of her forward compartments. She did not sink, but she was out of the war for months at a critical time. The Brits were aware of this weakness and accepted it, as the treaty did not allow for a displacement greater then 35k tons and they really need those 9-16in guns!
Battleships have belts of armor to protect their sides and decks against shellfire. The armor does not protect the ship much below the water line. Anti-torpedo protection involves layers of dry and wet compartments to adsorb the energy of an underwater explosion. Armoring the complete hull is useless, it would make the ship too heavy, and the armor would also act as a transmitter of shock and cause even more damage internally.
Accually there was such situation durring Bismarck raid when Rodney and KGV were spotted by german U-boat (i cannot remember his number)but she dont have any more torpedoes (they return to France from patrol) and both BBs were without escort of destroyers because Vian decided to chase Bismarck instead of cover both big ships...
I can imagine how furious was captain of this U-boat: such huge catch and he have not a single torpedo to fire.
the u boat was U-556 and it's captain was Herbert Wohfarth, nicknamed parsival he jokingly adopted Bismarck and pledged to protect her at an opportunity but had used his last torps on convoy HX126 when he spotted Ark Royal and Reknown just before the Ark's swordfish raid crippled Bismark! how he must have kicked himself!
The rodney would be damaged by torpedoes but never sunk she was built in a time when her armour belt was strong enough to survive a torpedo attack unlike the batteships and Battlecruisers of Jackie fishers navy
Yeah, that's a good piece of constructive critism! (haters please take note ;) ). I didn't really know how to use photoshop when I made this video but I've since learnt a fair bit about it - the night time pics could certainly do with adjustments! Unfortunately the original images were on a hard drive long since dead. I'll have to wack together some of my new SH4 screenshots and do a US or Japanese propaganda reel. Thanks, M
I simply love Silent hunter 3 and 4 and the night is very beautifull. the picture are very very good and i have read a lot about HMS rodney, battleship Bismarck, IJN Yamato, and HMS Nelson (the last is the best). Very good work!!
I think the RN severly underestimated the U-Boats capibility at the beginning of the war. This video rules! I've crippled a cruiser with one torp then done 2 more at the back and it sank very very slowly though. I have taken out a destroyer and then 2 troop ships before, during the happy times. I stalked that convoy for a couple of hours and just picked them off.
Unfortunately I lost the music so I can't tell you its name. Someone on the subsim forums posted a link to German military music of the era. You can probably do a search for it there.
Well done! The attack and the presentation here on Youtube. I've just fired up my gramophone and loaded a mission that has been waiting four months for me to return. I'm really inspired now.
Nice one, i know how hard it is to encounter any major warships, even with GWX!
Although, duplicates do sometimes appear... I met a taskforce with a KGV and two Nelsons!
12 saves later i sank all three (gave up on getting any of the 10 dido class) only problem is i was a retard later and sank a frendly merchent (it was at night!) - 200 renown for me!
I think some viewers have misunderstood the point of the video. I'm not German and I don't sympathise with their cause during WW2. This video is made in a COMPUTER GAME which simulates the command of a WW2 German U-Boat. It was made for role playing purposes only and is an attempt to imitate the propaganda of the era.
my grandad built the rodney ,at cammel laird shipbuiders birkenhead lauched 1925,only 33000 tons as we stuck to the treaty ,it had 16inch guns though, the germans broke the treaty, and increased their ships tonnage up to over 50.000 tonnes illegally .hence the bismark and tirpitz, ive always wondered what would of happend if all the nazi ships had come out to fight as one,or concentrated building u boats insted,
One of the class had been hit by torpedos, and one of them, or the same ship had hit mines and survived too. Tough underrated ships.

If you can't find it in stores, you can buy it at the ubisoft website. Game is called "Silent Hunter 3"
Then download latest patches from Ubisoft.
Then download GWX mod from Subsim. They require a donation for v3.0 but it's well worth it!!
Happy hunting!
