  • does anyone know where I can download this? I can't buy it in my country, nor use a PayPal account to buy it online.

  • @Nadius89 Search for 'Karajan in rehearsal and performance' on Amazon

  • "Remember, you're a human voice." I love that!!!

  • this is compelling viewing...much more so than those terribly staged dvds i`ve seen of late with his eyes shut.

rehearsal sequences are a better testament to HvK considerable talent.

  • Bernstein was an impulsive child messured against this mans will for absolute and uncompromising perfection.

There is a reason why Karajan is still the name to look for when searching for the really great recordings.

Bernstein never managed to evolve a style of his own.

And that is why he will never come close to this man who shaped the musical form of all of Europe.

  • that's ridiculous! Why did Karajan record his Mahler recordings with the BPO right after Bernstein performed the symphonies with them? Bernstein had his own, unique style. Go and listen to his Mahler, Beethoven and Haydn for instance.

Christa Ludwig said: "Karajan was a ingenious performer - Bernstein was a genius". I think that tells it all.

I actually admire both - for different reasons.

  • have to know.. it's last rehearsal.

  • "[P]recision is where passion begins. Without precision, _beaucoup de rien_, huh?"

    - John Updike, from _The Witches of Eastwick_

  • I like how he is using a study score, not a full sized one. He was a genius.

  • how is using a study score make you a genius? Can you elaborate?

  • because he doesn't even look at it except for 1 measure in 1 hour of rehearsal. He has the whole piece in his head. You know, most conductors use a full sized score in rehearsal at least, even if they don't in concert.

  • maybe he didn't have a podium to put a large full sized score? So, he brought a mini score, a score that he can use without the need of a podium?

I think it was Mitropoulous, who claimed to have a photographic memory, was he a genius also?

  • Actually, yes he was.

I'm just saying, most conductors (myself included) can't rehearse an entire symphony virtually from memory.

  • it's well known that Karajan got up every day at 4 am to memorize scores/ I guess that's the reason he doesn't need a score.

  • What an incredibly picturesque way of using his hand. My favorite moment is at 8:27 - just look how he asks for deeper sound with his hands!

  • Wow, what a towering figure is Karajan. I must say it must have been quite intimidating to hear him instruct, especially in that rigid German he spake.

  • Was he a smoker?

  • @1401JSC Yes

  • @Whaddafuq He may be rigid, but he is incredibly kind, always telling his musicians what to do without getting mad even when they don't get it the first time.
