2. You can target it using an earth-based missile which would lower the risk of missing the target. But the US wants to show that it has ability to do the job anywhere in the globe!

Since hydrazine is so combustible, wouldn't reentry make it heat up and blow itself up or at least burn off the hydrazine? They don't seem to worry about other past hydrazine containers coming down.

yeah, a satellite's decreases in orbital height is caused by it slowing down. It doesn't speed up. when a satellite is orbiting it is really falling to earth but it is going so fast it never hits the earth. as it slows down that's when it "falls" out of orbit. 2yng2di is and idiot.

I understand what he's saying about the government having secrets but I don't think that the reason they would blow up a satellite is because they have technology or information that they don't want others to see. The reason it has a full tank of Hydrazine is because, unlike other satellites that have fallen, it wasn't functioning properly. Clearly the government has an alterior motive but I think it is solely to test their hand at shooting things out of the atmosphere.

true video, but readers should be aware that the missile did not carry any explosives, and to "blow up" the satellite, it had to score a direct hit, which would in turn cause the satellites fuel to blow up. the missile travels at 6+ mph, 33 times the speed of sound, and uses impact energy to destroy the satellite

How long was the satellite in Earth's shadow before it was shot down? Early in the space shuttle program, they found that solar heating made the cargo bay doors expand enough to jam them if they were facing the sun for too long. A satellite also spends more time in the sun than in the shade. Cooling happens much more slowly without evaporation or conduction. Unless it cooled nearly to absolute zero while in earth's shadow, it would be visible to long-wave infrared. Same for nukes.

"Hit" is ambiguous. We don't know what it means in this context without seeing a video or getting an explanation. A missile doesn't have to directly hit an airborne target. Exploding some distance away is entirely sufficient in most cases.

The US is simply testing ASAT:
1. You can use laser weapon to make a hole so that hydrazine would leak out before the satellite hits the earth.
2. You can target it using an earth-based missile which would lower the risk of missing the target. But the US wants to show that it has ability to do the job anywhere in the globe!
3. 60 million dollars is ok given it's a mission at national level. However, you can invite China to do so with a much lower payment (Don't laugh! Is this true?).
