If you do some pauses while he has got the capo on you can see that he has pinched the E and the A strings pretty close together, how many of us would mess about trying to "get it right" but this guy is so professional he just plays right on through. Highly impressive.
When David pulls the capo out of his pants pocket and puts on the neck of his guitar without missing a lick, in all my days in the music business business I've seen anything like it. That's incredible from a guitar player's perspective. Take a close look at it.
David`s little Epiphone cuts through and places itself above the rhythm of Gillian`s J-50. If David Rawlings was looking for another guitar to accompany Gillian what would it be? Dave is playing banjo a lot recently with his 'Machine' but seriously, what acoustic guitar could do what that lovely Epiphone Olympic can do when it comes to accompaniment for Gillian`s songs? Just Wondering. Oh, by the way. Brilliant clip! Thanks!
Who on earth 'disliked'?? What do you want, BLOOD?!? Ye Gods, these two are GENIUSES (or is the plural 'genii'?)!!!! If you don't like this, you don't like music, quite frankly.
@OysterLava I am from the south and was raised on music. IT doesn't matter where someone is from. open your mind and your ears you uneducated closed minded pig. Especially since most of Nashville is putting out such slick pop garbage. Go behind the barn and toss your sister's salad you slack-jawed yokel. Thanks for this fw. Hi from Ireland to all mountain ballad lovers in USA. Don't like country music much but I love Welch and Rawlings , esp Time The Revelator. First time to see a clip of the duo - they're brilliant.

I have seen Gillian and David live quite a few times at MerleFest and a few other blue grass festivals, they are by far the most talented duo I have ever seen or heard. I love the music they write and I love their voices and the way the harmonize is a gift from above. David just wears out that vintage Epiphone arch top guitar out...he is a guitar genius...Gillian is no slouch on the guitar either
@pandeirobrass816- yeah I DID notice that.. and it's a pretty wicked move.. since you can't be sure that you are going to be any where NEAR in tune.. since a capo

Great stuff! You'll notice the E and A strings are damn close together. But he's that kind of guy who can compensate. I love that guitar! Anyone know the what/where/how (much) of it?
It's a 1935 Epiphone Olympic archtop with a carved top and plywood mahogany back and sides. I imagine it's rare, and if you can find one that's playable, it'd cost a fortune.
You are right about the guitar. I have one that I am restoring. It plays and has all of it's parts. The binding and finish is all that is left. I am ancious to play it. I know that I will never sound like D. R.

Wow. Thanks to the innertube this 58 year old irish kdi in upstate NY can finally get some kick-ass, honest to god bluegrass. Anybody know who made that ax Rawlings had?
I managed to pick up a 1941 Harmony Patrician recently based on the sound that Dave gets.
Both were low budget guitars at the time they were made. The Harmony has a lovely sound, but not the even tone of Dave's Epiphone. Or as talented an owner!
It's a Gibson, I think. oh- actuall an Epphone: via wikipdia: David Rawlings achieves his signature guitar sound flatpicking a small archtop guitar. The 1935 Epiphone Olympic that has been his primary instrument was a mid-priced guitar for its time, with a carved arched solid sprucewood top, carved arched solid mahogany back and mahogany sides.[1] It sold for about $35 in 1935.[2] The guitar's lower bout measures 13 5/8 inches wide, and it has three piece f-holes.[1]
Saw them at the N.O. Jazzfest a couple of years ago. It was one of the three or four greatest performances I've witnessed there in 30 years. The crowd was completely blown away. They are special and then some. Mesmerizing!
Looking out my window at the red clay gully that makes up my East TN backyard, this song would make me smile even if it weren't a Welch & Rawlings special.

We pretty much have the same taste in music, Michael....this song is on my favorite's list, and probably my fave of Gillian's, although it's hard to choose one of her's....they're all so dang good. And the capo move that David Rawlings does in the middle of this song is just unbelievable.
Is it me,but David Rawling and Gillian Welch remind me of what another duo would have been like,if it didnt end so early and tragicly,Im talking about Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons. You think?
I will always think of my mom when I hear this song. She recently died after fighting cancer - I was by her side till the end while she was in hospice care. She was a country gal who was not afraid to get her hands dirty. I heard this song for the first time while I was in CA saying goodbye to her. She would have loved it.
Yes! Like everything Gillian does, it's brilliant. She's one of my favorite singers. I've been to three of her shows, and she always greets fans afterward. Great singer and just an all-around nice person.
i had to rewind and check that! he did while playing AND singing!
i saw them live in london, just amazing. her singing and songwriting is wonderful, and david is a guitar genius - the sounds he got out of that old guitar were just fantastic!!
one monkey is her best in my eyes but is one is awsum aswell .i like all kinds of music .just depends on the mood im in today im in a one monkey mood so im listing to gillian over n over again once more
stop with the "truegrass" crap. Bluegrass come from the front porches of people's homes, it's always been raw and dirty. it's the music of common folk, so it can be as different as the individual playing it. there are no rules.
this is as much blue grass at its root as it is folk, or any other traditional type of american music. gillian calls it neo-americana, what ever that means. but its def bluegrass/ traditional folk at it its heart. why does everyone have to argue about, just enjoy. Also, fw22901, whyd you remove my earlier post? bogus.
That was how to slap on a capo 101.

I will always think of my mom when I hear this song. She recently died after fighting cancer - I was by her side till the end while she was in hospice care. She was a country gal who was not afraid to get her hands dirty. I heard this song for the first time while I was in CA saying goodbye to her. She would have loved it.
RIP, Mom. Ann 9/19/42-5/4/09

Yes! Like everything Gillian does, it's brilliant. She's one of my favorite singers. I've been to three of her shows, and she always greets fans afterward. Great singer and just an all-around nice person.

stop with the "truegrass" crap. Bluegrass come from the front porches of people's homes, it's always been raw and dirty. it's the music of common folk, so it can be as different as the individual playing it. there are no rules.

what about RedGrass

never heard of it, tell me.

Old time country came from the porches. bluegrass is to Old Time what Poison is to Iron maiden.
MYABUTTREEKS 2 years ago 2
true. Bluegrass (especially modern grass) is so overly produced. Old Time is raw and rugged. Yeah i understand.
natewaggoner 2 years ago
this is as much blue grass at its root as it is folk, or any other traditional type of american music. gillian calls it neo-americana, what ever that means. but its def bluegrass/ traditional folk at it its heart. why does everyone have to argue about, just enjoy. Also, fw22901, whyd you remove my earlier post? bogus.
