When I was a little kid(I'm 13 now, back when I was like 6 or 7), the startup for the PS2 kinda scared me a little bit because I thought something scary was going to happen like the face from the scary maze game(Yes I did play it but I didn't scream or anything, but I did run into my room and then had a nightmare from it.)

@matthewgroen The PSX was a digital video recorder with PS/PS2 consoles built in and was released in 2003. It was the first to use the XrossMediaBar thats used in the PS3 but it was to expensive so no one took interest and so it was never released outside of Japan.

Take a look on google images. You'll find many pictures of what looks like a big white DVD player with a Playstation controler. Thats the real PSX.

@DcA75cool I'm not 100% sure, but I think it depends on how many save files you have on your memory card and how long the memory card's been in the PS2. On my PS2, more and more of the blocks appear over time, but when I take out my memory card, most of them go away.

@GoldKnightProduction That's not a boot-up sound. :\ Only the Sonic games used it, when you first boot up the Genesis, the "produced by or under license by SEGA" screen shows up, unless you have one of the earlier models which didn't have region lock out.
