@creativecompanion I would recommend having him work around a I IV V progression. Maybe have him listen to a basic blues progression like that so he can hear the changes. He could start simple going from a C major chord, up to an F major chord, back to C Major, then up to a G major, down to an F major and back to C major. From there I would introduce him to pentatonic scales for improv.
@cubanplaya121 good advice..Im a self taught blues guitarist and dabble on the keys here and there too...listen, listen, listen..one of the biggest things with blues is having a feel for it and knowing where the changes are..it seems simple..but youd be surprised how many people dont have that basic idea down..the notes are fairly simple to get used to in the long run..but phrasing is where its at..which comes from listening and studying what youre hearing
