When I lived in Buffalo, guys used to give me shit all the time for pulling over to the side for blue lights on a civvie vehicle for volunteer fire department. I always told them I knew I did not HAVE to, but if it were my place on fire, I would want the fd there as fast as possible. Just a common courtesy thing.
I am somewhat confused here. I am the Emergency Management Officer for my County in a Southern State. I am not familiar with people using blue lights other than police. Will someone please give me an update. Does the use of this additional source allow for other citizens getting involved?
@nodemas In New York State, Volunteer firefighters are permitted the use of a blue light, which is considered a courtesy light. This means they are only asking for the right of way, and are not permitted it. They must obey all traffic laws while using the light. Members of an ambulance corp. may be granted a green light. This follows the same laws as a blue light, it is only a courtesy light and is only requesting the right of way. Police in NYS are only granted red and white forward facing.
@FirefighterEmt4Life Generally, in Texas, a green light is an indicator of oxygen on board and ambulances are the only vehicles in TX that would normally use green, most of the time .. red/blue/amber are the common combination of colors used here .. in some cases, red only, with a clear cut out, for volunteer fireman/1st responder's .. although they do use blue and amber with the red in most places...each state is different, and even within a state a jurisdiction can further limit colors used...
@jazzbutterworth It is a Courtesy light, so it is encouraged that people pull over, but they don not have to.... if they do he can pass, but must still obey laws.
Certain towns/counties/states don't allow emergency personnel, like firefighters, to have "lights and sirens" on their personally owned vehicles, but will allow them to have a blue light when responding to a call or to the station
It's funny how blue is a more visible colour, yet you aren't allowed to use it on ambulances :P

@FirefighterEmt4Life Indiana is the same way. All the surrounding states use red lights and sirens and are considered an emergency vehicle...
