Palmettoboy8634. Mirabella IS here (Charleston) right now.  I live across from the marina at Albemarle Pt. and saw it sail in this morning! What a sight! (are you at Porter Gaud School beause it sounds like you have the same perspective that I do! The Mirabella sailed in shortly after sunrise this morning.

Today I walked out of my school in Charleston, SC. I saw a giant mast sticking up above the trees and drove down to be marina and talked to the M5 crew. Tallest mast in the world, 3 square km of sail. 900 million dolla.

Joseph Vittoria designed and had her built, he was CEO of AVIS among other things, and a wonderful man btw, he was a customer of mine, amazing person. He loves sloops and Mirabella I - V were a progression of increasingly larger sloops, always holding on the the record for largest. I sailed with him on Mirabella II, simply insane tech goes into these boats.

World's largest sloop. Must furl the jib to tack. supposedly this is typical for large sloops. Maltese Falcon is actually a ship rig. 3 masts and square-rigged sails as opposed to fore-and-aft. I love the way she moves through the water!

When she was launched she was the biggest single-masted sailing boat. There are bigger boats, but with more masts.

I don't understand why people insist on whining about the boat! Who cares how it was paid for! A serious amount of new technology and development went into this boat, just to make the design possible! All she is, is a 40 footer gone supersize, without the waves or people in the video for perspective, one could mistake for a much smaller boat!

It almost looks like a normal - if expensive - yacht, till you see the size of the people on board!

Just to clarify - she's not the biggest sailing yacht in the world, but she's the biggest SINGLE MASTED (ie sloop) afloat.

She is still one of the biggest, although the Maltese Falcon, Athena and Eos are larger in length, I believe M5 still has the tallest mast.

just as you know, this boat cost 350 000 US-dollars to rent/hire for one week! the mast is 85 meters tall and the boat is about 75 meters long (approximately 210 feet)...;)

It most certainly does do 19 knots, why do people who know nothing of sailing make comments your an idiot.  If you do the formula which is based on the water line of the vessel you would calculate the boat does does do 19 knots.
