Joni Michell's greate talented, original and brave. A woman playing a guitar amazing. I didn't know who she was until a music teacher at the university of Miami an acquaintance at the time heard me play my guitar at a private party in Coconut Grove on Orange street back then. He said I sounded like her. I had to know what he was talting about. I've been discovering ever sence.
genius...after 'hejira' folk complained cos it was a short double not a lengthy single album!...but PLEASE-wheres 'paprika plains'??...longer uploads now! thanks for putting this up-its brilliant and as a musician a big influence on me.thanks dudes.
I listened to this with a friend as we drove back east from Colorado in the summer of 1980. The sun was actually rising in front of us when this song came on the cassette player in his little car, no AC and the windows rolled down the volume WAY up! So magical. I will never forget it.
My dad played this for me myriad times as I was growing up. I will forever remember his sillouhette in the record closet and this playing throughout the otherwise darkened house as my brother and sister and I played hide and seek. If you have a place like that to go, you just have to go there. If you have no place to go, well then my dear, you just go no place special... :D
Think about this also - the trombones at the end are actually Jaco. It seems that he was given ultimate freedom to play on this album and Hejira and gave some of the most creative work he ever did.
I got this when it first came out in the UK (RIP John Peel, we still love you and miss you). For a good while Don Juan's Reckless Daughter was my favourite album. I haven't heard it for about 20 years. If no-one uploads Paprika Plains soon, I'll be buying it again.
This and THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS are probably the two least known important Joni albums; DON JUAN is a masterpiece from beginning to end, and the last song, THE SILKY VEILS OF ARDOR, still knocks me flat. Joni Mitchell: one of a handful of the greatest creative geniuses of the 20th Century.
Hey Mr B, I feel I must join with the thanks for posting this. I lost this that long ago I forgot it existed. Stumbled upon it here and went straight back to 18 years old. Bless you
Joni is up there with the greatest of composers. Her music and lyrics are equally beautiful. I can't think of any other artist who has written a soundtrack to so many aspects of life and relationships. There is a perfect song for every emotion and reflection
dude, you know it. this is a great album, especially around July 4 -- a celebration of North America, the Great Plains, wide-open spaces, and freedom. this and "Hissing" are the ultimate summer evening albums. my neighbor Prince is into this stuff. dig.
Thank you so much for posting this, Brilliant! It would be great to string this to-gether with Otis and Marlena, The Tenth World and Dreamland! I'm just looking at the original album and I've written on the back the date I bought it; 12 January 1978 30 years on, And the music still is and will always be fantastic.
i used to play this one loud, racing through the carolina countryside, taking the turns neatly, the warm late spring air rushing through the windows. sigh... wow. thanks.
One person got no place special.

Possibly the best opening track to an album ever.
Or maybe BURN by Deep Purple?
Ah well, both great.

I was working at a record store in SW Washington, DC when I first heard this.
By the time Jaco's bass entered the song, I wanted to steal the Album and go Home.
I bought it later, and took a few days off... getting stoned and listening over and over.
That was in 1978, I think.
I haven't heard it since... and I still have the Album!
Thanks for the reminder.
