The fact that we are getting any kind of display at all means that there's probably nothing wrong with the hardware itself. I think one of the systems greatest features (easy HDD upgradeability) may be the issue. Sony does not manufacture HDD's. We also have to remember that Sony does suggest swapping the HDD before you call customer service. It's your choice.$40 HDD or $150 service.

i have the FAT PS3 and i got the RSOD and i tryed the recovery screen and it didnt help so i phoned up my local Sony store today and told them the problem, and they are coming to my house 2moz with a new ps3 slim free of charge and they will take away my current Fat ps3 for spare parts. so calling a LOCAL sony store is your best bet.
All you do is put the newest firmware update on a thumb drive and boot it to the bios. It's super easy, no cracking open the case to do it. Theres really nothing you cant fix on a PS3, thats the beauty of these over the Xjunk 3-crappy.

Red screen of dead displaying: a serious error has ocurred! Means that your ps3 motherboard has been damage and the only way to fix it is by replacing the motherboard the repair cost goes from $120.00 to 160.00 if you send it to Sony. Good luck!!

here's the problame i got the red screen of death thing, And i sent it back for repairs and gave it back.. later like 3 or more weeks later i got it got it again i sent the ps3 back to sony about 3 times for the same reason every time. my recomendation is to back up you stuff when the games start to glitch up, then Replace the Hard drive with a new 'SATA' 5400 RPM(at minimum) 2.5 intch Hard Drive and Replace it with the current one. the hard disk buddy on the left side theres a little fleap....remove that...take out the HDD and get a screw driver take that part out...put in a different HDD in put screws back in send your PS3 in and get a refurbed PS3 and you still have your HDD from before...replacing the HDD doesnt void the warranty either so your good...sorry about that i shouldve described what i was saying more...

here's the problame i got the red screen of death thing, And i sent it back for repairs and gave it back.. later like 3 or more weeks later i got it got it again i sent the ps3 back to sony about 3 times for the same reason every time. my recomendation is to back up you stuff when the games start to glitch up, then Replace the Hard drive with a new 'SATA' 5400 RPM(at minimum) 2.5 intch Hard Drive and Replace it with the current one. That is my advice. IT WILL COME BACK SO DONT RICK IT.....

I bought a PS3 the 2nd day they came out, I played that thing to death, and it finally went out on me about 5 months ago....I bought a new PS3 (the thick version with only 2 usb ports and no memory card slots) and it has already gone bad...red screen for me. I played it earlier today for about 2 hours, went to work, came home 7 hours later, turned it on, and BAM, red screen. I don't understand what is causing it, because I installed the latest update about 10 days prior to today.

the hard disk buddy on the left side theres a little fleap....remove that...take out the HDD and get a screw driver take that part out...put in a different HDD in put screws back in send your PS3 in and get a refurbed PS3 and you still have your HDD from before...replacing the HDD doesnt void the warranty either so your good...sorry about that i shouldve described what i was saying more...

thx rappingkid,U rlly saved me the time and hassle about my HDD but im still not sure about that voiding sony warranty,but my ps3 was different,first stopped playing games,then only let me play downloaded games and vids......but then kept freezing b4 it even got to the loading screen and so i formatted everything and it worked fine playing downloaded games but still i had 2 send it back 2 sony
