I got a question...i've been following a russian time program where the beginning was all condition like 6 sets of 3 and then 4 and then on the 10th week you find your new max. After you find your max can you just start the cycle back up to act as your deload since you are working with 80% again for quite a bit of volume or is a actual deload still necessary? I've been successful so far with 3 cycles just jumping right back in but wanted a opinion from a accomplished person like yourself.
Man... your reps are so clean. My final 2 days of the Smolov mesocycle are coming up starting tomorrow, and while I complete the sessions, I'm pulling all the stops to hit those final reps. Nowhere near this level of strength, though.
Do you use any mental cues or techniques to ensure you maintain such an upright position? I notice you come forward a bit after a couple reps, but recover smoothly. Pulling the bar down hard, things like that?
This is one of the few squat videos on youtube which have left me impressed. Very good work on the smolov routine and congrats on the PR. You aint squat til you squat.
amazing squat! i'm a powerlifter too, i train with sheiko program. i would like to try the smolov, the base mesocycle for squat and bench too, a little modified for the bench (like 6x6 in the 1° day, 5x7 2° day, 4x9 3° day, the same 3x10 for the 4° day) what do you think? how many cycle you do with smolov usually?
Hey dude, just finished a semi smolov to prepare for nationals and now i'm doing some volume squats. I'm hitting around 10 - 12 at 180kg (405) @ 90kg body weight with raw + no belt at the moment but I'm just starting to prepare for my first international comp.. I was actually hoping to get some advice if possible?! Especially because my squat style is so similar to yours. Anyway email is I_am_Jeza@ hotmail.com if you get a chance.. Cheers mate, Jez
Compared the Blenderate I'm the biggest noob ever, but IMO the amount that a belt helps depends a lot on your back strength (i.e. spinal erectors) relative to your leg/hip strength. My spinal erectors are pretty strong relative to my legs/hips, so for me a belt doesn't actually add any weight at all to my squat when my back is fresh. I do use one when my back is tired, though.
I should note that this is for a high-bar rock-bottom squat.
@Blenderate Do you feel this helps you lift more? Stupid questions perhaps, but do you honestly think it helps physically, or is it just a mind trick? I've seen others do it too, but never tried it myself!
@kraftsportNO Yes. I think it invokes the fight-or-flight response. You can achieve the same thing in other ways, though. Face slapping, loud music, imagining a loved one in danger, etc.
nice work andy, hard to imagine that you'd ever missed 661 before with the way you handled it here. how have your other lifts held up while running smolov? and is smolov harder when dealing with a higher theoretical max?
I think my bench and deadlift have stayed about even. I'm doing bodybuilding-type stuff for my upper body while I run Smolov. I'm not sure how difficult Smolov has been for me in comparison with people who have lower maxes. It's certainly been very difficult, though. I had a lot of doubt that I would be able to finish the base mesocycle.
Nice squat man! Must feel great to squat 300kg+ raw like that.
One question though, you obviously have pretty decent quads.. How do you keep them flexible? I try to squat with a somewhat similar form but my quads are so tight they give me inflammation in the knees due to being on my toes. Got any tips on this?
I do very little extra stretching for my quads. They get stretched every time I hit the hole in the squat. I also do some foam rolling in between workouts.
I've got a nice 12 week window after my next comp till Nationals. I think I'm going to give this Smolov a try. I'll prepare for it by whipping and pouring hot wax all over myself for the next month. Stay tuned.......
great lifting andy. i've recently started doing higher reps in squat and feel as if it's really working, your youtube channel will come in handy preworkout haha. take it easy bud.
You look insanely strong, and you are! Fantastic! It will be interesting to see how far you can make it! What is your goal now? Keep going with the switching, and then intense? 12.5kg is an incredible gain at such an advanced level. How much bodyweight did you gain? Did you use creatine, or any other supplements during the base cycle? Fantastic, fantastic! Did Tigerak also do the program? How much did he gain?
Yeah, I'm going to complete the Smolov program. My goal is to make it through the intense cycle without missing any reps. :)
I gained about 4 lbs. (1.8 kg). I used creatine, BCAAs, various vitamins (especially vit. B, C, and D), CoQ10, and fish oil. And of course, lots of food and protein.
Tigerak didn't do it b/c it conflicted with him competing at the Arnold. I think he still plans to do it at some point.
Thanks for the answer. I've done the complete program for back squats twice. I am sure you will get through it. And it is sickenly hard! I wish you the most of success, it could give you even more strength. Usually I got the most gains from the last part of the program, but I tell you it is insanely hard. I think you can do it, you have the mindset. Good luck, and post some sets if you care, would be nice to watch! :) Good motivation for me, trying to get back from injury!
Where is this training facility located?
