  • I have this exact fan. I work in a military hospital. A friend took it apart to paint it and now it's unwired. How can I tell where the wires go coming from the motor to the switch? I can't tell where they attached to the controller. I'm new to vintage fans, but I love this one! Thanks!

  • @B17MIKE - Do a search on DT Vintage Fan Forums, there are a few threads there that can help. It's free to join up, just use your real first name and last initial - then post your question on the wiring.

  • my boss from one of my old jobs just called me this weekend to tell me he had a fan for me. he saved it from being thrown out from a relatives house that had been involved in some bad flooding we just had. its a 1952 emerson 79648 AX. its in nice shape but needs a screw for the oscillator.

  • Thanx for the video. I just bought this exact model and I am thinking I got a really good deal. I can't tell the exact date code. It is a 4 something. I can't read the second digit as the paint on the tag is coming off around the rivets holding the palte on.

  • I've had two of these fans in my basement for about twenty years. One is in mint condition and the other just needs to be cleaned up because it's covered in dust- Emerson 79646-AX.

What are these things worth by the way? I know they are heavy as heck, and some what combersome, but work after all these years like new:))

    Thanks for the post, dburrigh!

  • @GitcheG75 - You've basically got the civilian version of these fans, which are quite good - as you discovered. They don't fetch a lot value wise (the collector set likes brass bladed fans), but are great runners.

  • Do you know what the difference is between the 799646-AT, 79646-AX and 79646 AP-G ?

  • @pdffff - If the last number in the sequence is a 6, that designates a 6" blade radius to yield a 12" fan. The AP-G suffix means it's a Government Issue fan.

Your 79646 AT and AX are the civilian models with the normal single bearing motor. They're all good fans.

  • Wow!!! I just learned something about one of my Emersons! I have the 12" version of yours, made in 1952, the 79646 AP-G. I thought that "AP-G" was strange, as I haven't really seen another one until now. I had no idea it's a Government issue! Mine has "HOSP #33" written in glue on the base, now I'm wondering what that means?! Maybe it was used in a government-ran hospital...maybe wing or building number 33? HMMM...now I'm thinking.

    Thanks for posting the video!

  • @promod400exridr - Glad to have helped! Your fan may have been in a military or VA hospital.

  • I have a 79648-AX. It is all original except the cord and in very good condition. It belonged to my grandmother so it is not for sale. How can i determine the date of manufacture?

    Thanks, ]

    Terry

  • @tleflar - To date your fan, look at the motor tag (up under the carry handle. In the lower right hand corner you'll see a small two digit code, if you add 20 to this number you'll get the year of manufacture.

So on my 79648 AP-G, the code read 30. I added 20 to that and got 50, which basically means 1950.

    HTH.

  • Hi,

I have a 79648-AQ, made in 1946. I do not think it is a government issue, but it was property of the State of Illinois long ago. Years ago my uncle replaced the speed control with a "power-on" button on the back. She runs fine and oscillates, but only one speed now. I would like to restore this baby to its original configuration. Can anyone help me out and point me in the correct direction?

    Thanks! -Steve

  • @buckeye61820 - You are right that your fan is not government issue - those usually have a G suffix in the model number. You still have a nice fan though.

As to your speed control, is the original slide switch still present? The speed coil transformer may still be in the base.

I'd like to invite you to post your question on the DT Vintage Fan Forums - I'll send you a message with the link. We can help you restore your fan to its' original specs.

  • hey my friend just picked up one of these! i am going to try and help find the parts its missing and thanks to your vid duane we know what it should look like! great!

  • The grille looks a bit like the 77648AO.

  • @Tabby266 - It's a little different, note that the "cross" pieces are single on this fan while on the 77648 AO there are two pieces of wire. The guard on this fan is also less "fat."

  • Hm. Never noticed the "fat" part.

  • I have one just like it with matching numbers,It need a new paint job the paint is rough but other than that it's in fine shape and it runs perfectly.Bought it in an antique shop 2 years ago.

  • You did a nice job describing the fan.

These fans also look good by removing the blade paint and polishing the aluminum finish.

    Happy Fanning!

  • my emerson 79648 AK is fairly quiet but not even close to being as powerfull as my ge vortalex. but none the less it just might be my most efficient fan! my most efficent 16" anyways.

  • These have a healthier pitch to the blades than the typical 79 series fan. The government issue model really is the ultimate in that series of fans.

The 77 series with the overlapping blades are also quite potent.

  • that g'vt issue fan you have is quite nice! but im happy with what i got! now i have a problem with it! im not sure when ill be able to paint it! ive gotten used to it running at night now! and last night was humid! the perfect night to really use it!

  • SWEET EMERSON its the same age as my 79648AP-G that bill got me great fans great video :) 5 stars

  • Thanks man!

  • Oh man, I really like this Emerson! Better than my hunter. ;)

  • Thanks Professor! It is a really nice one, and it'll be even better after I fix the blades up right.

  • Just like mine but yours is in way better condition. Your right, its a really solid and powerful runner. My grille is black though unlike yours which is chrome? Very very nice!

  • Thanks man! The guard is actually cadmium plated on these, kind of a dull but bright finish.

  • By the way, I meant to comment on this while the comment were open but this is the first time for me to see this video because of all the hours I've been working. I give this video 5 stars!

  • I appreciate it!

  • Very nice fan and very powerful too! a heck of alot more poweful than Dino Boy's (Andrew Jarman's) fans and I bet even today's high velocity fans, like those of John Brown's! XD

  • Now now now Beau, be nice to Andrew...

But yeah, this fan will own any new "Made In China" POS.

  • Oh I have nothing against A.J., even though his fans do suck. I understand his disability and he is a great guy. If I were ever to do a video parody of him it would just be to have fun like Rob and Drew did. Believe me though I have no intension on being rough on Andrew. I just like to use the term as one of the many terms to describe today's fans, like EmersonCollie and others like to do sometimes. I was not at all making fun of Andrew, just using the name for a description of modern day fans.

  • Well, we have sorta accepted the "Can Video Now" thing as being funny (I've done it a few times).

However, I do have an axe to grind with the loser who keeps downrating the fan vids. I'd laugh if that fucker suffered from an unfortunate accident.

  • Well, when I finally get my Hunter "Hotel Original with Adapt-Air" ceiling fan installed I may kind of sneak in that "Fan installed now" line that EmersonCollie used in his ceiling fan installation videos. In EmersonCollie's Tatung vs. Guan Mei video, he refers to the Guan Mei as an Andrew Jarmans special and that's how I use Andrew Jarmans as just a generic term for a modern day piece of crap fan, not to make fun of him in any way.

  • Speaking of EmersonCollies Guan Mei, even if it lasts more than a year, I hope that Emerson will still perform a very spectacular execution to that fan, due to how very crappy that thing is built. IMO that is one of the cheapest and crappiest fans ever built!

  • I agree, plastic shit, metal fans are forever,oh and did I mention last forever.

  • very nice unit.

  • Glad you finally got one of these! It's interesting that despite all that power, it's still very efficient. The video is enjoyable and informative, as always.

  • That thing looks really rugged! Nice.

  • Wow, that thing is beautiful.

  • Sweet fan! I too, plan on getting a government Emerson...these are literally "bullet-proof" >;^D

  • That they are! Be ready to snipe when one does come up, that's how I got this one.

  • Very nice fan.The HD looks really good.

  • Thanks! I'm pretty happy with the new camera (Flip Mino HD), you just have to use it right (tripod) or the image is jiggly.

  • Nice fan Duane its a good runner

  • I JUST LOVE IT!! that's the one you ran on low that other night :oD right on!

  • Yep, and it's running on low now too! ;-)

  • WOOOOOT :)

  • Nice one Duane! I like that finish. I like how quiet it is.

  • Thanks Mitch! The finish is really neat on this thing, and yeah the quiet running is a big plus.
