So unbelievable, they kept shifting from Boro park to Manhattan, and Orthodox Jews don't live in dark homes. I watched part of the movie being filmed, and they make the Jews look like Amish people. Orthodox people have computers (like me!) and nice homes with normal cars, (I have a Ford Flex!!) and the rest of the movie shows how everything runs around the men and the REBBE, I don't think that my husband runs anything or anyone besides his office and his toilet!!lol. Jews have traditions!
The butcher isn't the most handsome or smartest or even most prestigious guy, but he is down to earth: he isn't constantly caught up on heaven's books (lofty ideas at a meatgrinder is a bad idea) and it would be no big deal if Sonia wants to share in his life as an assistant at the shop-he might even enjoy her company. Unlike Mendel, he'll come home, kiss her, shower to get the meat smell off, and maybe surprise her with flowers...not cerebral discussions about Halakha.
@shadowkitty56 These are all things that a husband is obligated to do with his wife. He is obligated to make her happy. It's possible to be scholarly but worldly at the same time.
The general idea is he should meditate before that the physical union is a reflection of the spiritual union, and to have pure children to bring up.Just like she went before to the ritual bath. But he is supposed to give her enjoyment before and after, not get upset. Most of the women marry at 18,19,the men around 23 having had no prior experience but they are taught in a positive light, its discussed at home in a beautiful light to the children that relations are holy, good, positive.
@RasMajnouni Yes, but unfortunately with some men, especially scholars, they tend to want to think more than feel. Mendel might be the kind who is so focused on the letter of the law that he forgets the spirit in which it is written: so many laws of do's and don'ts. So many voices saying no. Mendel might have trouble understanding, thus, ,"yes" when it is said to him!!
@shadowkitty56 I agree which is why I am a Chasid. The learning must inspire a tremendous emotional fire which leads to good deeds & actions of the mind & heart as man &7 wife!
@RasMajnouni (Laughing) Yes, and any psychologist, Jew or Gentile, will tell you that it is very difficult to have any kind of sexual passion if your mind is literally scanning the Laws of Moses word for word at night in bed!! (Even Moses himself did not do this with his own wife-reciting them all would have put her to sleep, and worse, halfway through she'd still have to go through the Ten Commandments!!)
@RasMajnouni Other than that, it would probably have been better if Sonia's parents weren't so set on her marrying a scholar: the temperaments just do not match. Sonia probably would have been better off marrying somebody like a jeweler or kosher butcher:CONTINUED

She opened her arms in the end, and he climbed on and didn't even realize that she wasn't with him. That's very sad.
