All these poor fearful city folk don't understand how working around equipment like this forces a man to be more aware. If you grow up around machinery like this, you learn to respect it's power and you will take appropriate measures. Notice his first lesson was--Don't ever put your hand or your fingers in between the anvil and the splitter wedge.
hey! that looks like an old Massey-Harris-Ferguson baler! was it a #3? we used to have one and i cried when dad scrapped it. this would have been the perfect use for it!
I am really amazed you use a machine as dangerous as that... no doubt that when you use it enough you WILL crush your hand or lose a finger or two eventually. Not to mention wood flying around and doing harm that way.
really cool, its much faster than the hydraulic splitters and that old tractor probably runs all day on 2 gallons of fuel. Now if you had a conveyor to put the logs in the truck you would be stylin. I would use this splitter over any snail crawl hydraulic anyday.
You're burning a heck of a lot more fuel per cord than I'm burning with my Briggs Vangard engine. And my whole outfit (that my father built thirty-five years ago) takes up a lot less space in the shed than that poor old baler of yours.
If you split wood with your machine for as long as I've split wood with mine, I'll bet you have fewer fingers left than I do, and I still have all of mine.
Martino, that is crazy. Your hands were pretty damned close a couple of times. EVERYONE says "nah, I handle it fine", and they do....until the one time they don't, and there's no going back from that. The machine is cool....you need a device to stop the cycle to load wood...tap handle, cycles quickly and waits. MUCH safer. There is a commercial product like that, but it looks flimsy. There's a YT vid of it I'll try to find. Good luck.
Yeah,if I look at other peoples wood splitting videos it does look scary to me as well...lol.But when you do it yourself it's less scary...well,most of the time, haha
I love this idea!! Also, my dad still farms with Cockshutt tractors. We have 4 560's like yours and 2 550's and 1 40. Great to see these at work. We live in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, USA
the clutch I welded solid. I normally have a long rope on the pto lever from the tractor so in case i do get a log stuck or something happens i can pull the rope and the pto stops... it does happen with too big logs or if one gets in sideways...
I have been heating my home with a wood gasification boiler with an 800 gallon heat storage tank. When i see people that like wood and cool toys a feel the need to tell you ,Peace
I had a hugh H beam about 18" x 8" very heavey, so any way made a right angle by chopping and welding a bit. The got a ram of a JCB site master and made a slidding head wich runs along a smaller H beam welded up the middle of the large one......jees hope this makes some sense.....any way at the end is a vertical sharpend spleeter head with a cross head. Made 3 of them before it was strong enough.Kept self distructing. Now can cut through knots etc. Will do a ton an hour roughly. I am building a
I think it is quite ingenious, however an accident waiting to happen?.....Although hydrolic is slower stroke, you have time, plus you could weld a cross axe head and split four in one stroke, that is how I made mine. It cuts through knots and all no prob. All the best, John from Scotland.
It really doesn't look that dangerous to me. It just requires the operator to have a brain and follow a few simple rules. Like an amishman around here tells me about his old tools in his shop- "you can use my tools, but remember they don't have brains". (meaning your brain is required to keep you safe when you use them).
It looks less dangerous than a radial arm saw or cordwood saw - long as you keep the area clear where your feet are.
I like it! Persoanlly I would slow it down a bit. It would give you a bit more time to get out of the way. Even if slowed down the cycle rate is way faster than a hydraulic splitter.
It's not the most dangerous hay baler converted to a log splitter I've seen on YouTube. It is, however, the second most dangerous hay baler converted to a log splitter I've seen on YouTube.
thanks,it took me 2 evenings to convert the bailer into this splitter, and we have split several winters worth of wood with it,for our self and some other families.the only source of heat we have is the woodstove,so we use alot of wood, and it never let me down,it's a simple machine, have to watch out abit for your hands, thats why there's no beer holder on it,lol
Simple and functionally :-) You can cut your fingers even when you make yourself dinner... It is all bout respect for the equipment...

see,i only grab a log on its sides, never on the ends..
and the "pusher" is not very high,i can easily keep my hands on top of the log when its getting split..
when i'm in a ritme,i can have a log in there every stroke,we split a pickup box full in 10 minutes..
