i really hate nowadays punk it has way to much energy in songs and wat the fuck is wrong with POP PUNK??? it is already POP already!!! but nice video thou...
He's wrong, there was New Wave for like 5 minutes. It consisted of Gary Newman's 'Cars', Flock of Seagulls' LP and 'Science' by Thomas Dolby, that was it,after that it was over,if you blinked you missed it. No big loss.
I was just thinking and I've gotten very frustrated with punk. My generation having grown up in the 90's I would say in general hasn't really had to suffer that much. I'm being a little simplistic, but come on the only problems we had were the L.A. riots, and Bill Clinton's affair which isn't even a problem. The point is the music isn't as hardcore anymore because we just haven't had to suffer or strive for anything. It's been too easy, that's why punk rock isn't tough anymore.
well there are nearly no more pure hardcore bands there mostly melodic or post hardcore or metalcore. Well youth subculture's are all self centered anyway.
The term "new wave" was the same bullshit the corporate media did when they called Seattle garage bands "grunge". It's a way to market underground music (and destroy it in the process) to douchebags who shop in malls.
well same with punk rock being used to talk about anyone with a mohawk or anyone with ripped jeans. Just because a punk listens to them there automatically punk. New Wave is itself subgenre based on a mixture of punk with happy go lucky pop rock and glam. Even popier then the pop punk bands.
I grew up in the 1980s punk scene in the Bay Area and it was pretty fucking violent, we drank and fucked then went and fought. I agree anyone who said they were new wave or mod was considered a poser or pussy, but the kids I hung with and the people who were at the shows were pretty hardcore. I went to a Danzig show recently and the pit was pretty weak, I remember way more people and energy back then. The scene today is all watered down Nickelodeon punk. Give me the Misfits, Black Flag, or Fear.
I like Green Day but they r like a water downed punk just as someone else said but i belive at one point they were punk and if u watch woodstock 94 idk if anyone will agree with me but that's the closest they ever got to anarchy i think. damn this is all so complicated!
green day are more pop punk, separate from the Hardcore Punk genre entirely, and pop punk aint all Blink 182 and Good Charolette. It includes bands like the Ramones and Buzzocks. Some people are so ignorant
well if they're is a genre for everything, there should be one called pussy punk for sure, and why stop there? why not chick punk, and guy punk, and political punk, bullshit punk, simple lyrics punk, metal punk, goth punk, old punk, new punk, does it seem like it could go on forever to you? that's because no one is the same and no band is the same because of that. There may be the universal things, because everybody is human.
dammit this isnt new wave- gary numan on the cover of Replicas or bowie in young american days
orlook at adam ant-thats new wave (and or new romantic but i digress) :there is (was ) a new wave and it crested high and will leave an indelible mark on music (but mainly we have moog and other synthesizer pioneers like him for new wave and its sea change/still lasting backlash want to see new wavers? look at the crowd in the stand and deliver video of adam and the ants (ant dressed new romantic/odd
Yawn you guys are silly arguing over what's punk, what's new wave. As far as genres yes new wave exists. Thats the easiest ways to describe bands like, devo, blonde, the cars, etc. but no it was never a new wave movement. bands didn't go oh i'm going to act all new wave and do new wave things. it was all part of the underground "punk" movement. the genere names came about to help describe sounds within the movement and to organize it for people.
yet at the same time the guy in the video is just being a pretentious fuck. genres and movements are different so his argument is irrelevant. punk is dead too and what people think of it is just the genre not the movement. it was a silly label some guys who started a rock and roll magazine came up with as a joke. the original bands just said uhh we play rock and roll. jazz and blues did it before punk and kids are still doing it now.
The terms like punk movement, goth movement, and the subcultures are just bulshit. I admit to being a fan of punk rock but I must say that the movement is built on conformity and trying to be cool, like most youth subcultures and movements
punk is right where it needs to be, and that's underground. i don't see punk on mtv, green days isn't punk none of that shit is. i'm not going to be a pretentious cunt and start listing all the bands you won't know, but punk is well and truly alive.
Hahah, I liked that video. And I liked the very wise-sounding comment - "Punk is a state of mind" and then came "...numb nuts." I agree with that little saying, but I like Green Day, their old stuff mostly. Not really punk though, you're right there, and they kinda sold out recently. The oldies are the best.
Only acceptable form of Punk out there. If it was one thing we did in california it's that we did it Faster, we did it harder, and we did it with more passion.... Except the Exploited. They were neat. ( this was not to denounce any other area but one for one I favor california style punk )
what a dick cant come up with or own line so lets rip ir from a movie witch shows in the end there is only a few real punks and ripping somthing off a move is not even close to being punk you fucking dumb shit
but lets face it punk ethic has been destroyed its been dead since the sex pistols, clash and siouxsie and the banshees sold out. And black flag have had relations with MCA and Anti Flag have relations with warner brothers. Punk Is Dead as no more punks are tolerate
Like I said in another comment for a similar video, fuck the mainstream. All these emo bands are not punk, never will be. All the new stuff on MTV is corporate formula bullshit, just taking credit away from bands like the Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys. You name any good band, there are a million rip-offs of them on MTV.
Hell ya. Blink 182, green day and shit like that are a bunch of faggots. Punk is live fast and die young, not bitching about nothing. And the circle jerk song kicked ass. more for flagg7000's list circle jerks, the virus, lower class brats, the adicts, and of course the misfits (danzig era was the best)if you don't know any of these bands and call your self a punk. you are infact and HOMO. And if you say that Graves started or was the best of the misfits please burn in HELL
ummm...i like green day, and if you ask me, green day sounds like punk rock to me. and also FiendishWolf138, your obvious homophobia is the least punk thing ever, and also for everyone who doesnt know, punk rock isnt about "live fast die young"...if it was why would there be straight edge? punk is only about musical freedom. not anarchy, hardcore, drugs, sobriety, or being "hardcore".
The word homophobia is gay! I have no fear of homo's. Punk, in my opinion, is the ability to voice your opinion, no matter how much it pisses people off! I think fags are gross, sexual perverts. This world would be better off without gayness. Green Day is gay! Very bad music.
green day is not punk. Their early stuff (the dookie album) was good but not punk. They were alt rock. What your thinking about is what the record label calls punk. Punk is a state of mind; the music doesn't make you punk. Punk is about political injustices and to courage fight back. Anarchy is used alot in punk songs biggest example, Anarchy in the UK by the Sex Pistols. You said that punk is not about drugs or sobriety, that alone is a contradiction of what you said, well played numb nuts.
Back in the 80's the Misfits played hardcore and they were classified as hardcore... even themselves did. It changed when the new kids came along and called it horror punk. It was right there with circle jerks, gang green, minor threat, etc/
Green day are pop punk. A band who has taken aspects of punk like the 3 chord riffs and fast beats and the fashion and have churned it with a poppy sound to mainstreamify it. It's a watered down version of punk without the anarchy or danger. Not necessarily bad just not real punk.
hey punk is built on the ethics of tolerance and acceptance. Sex Pistols bitched, Anti Flag bitches and pop punk bands like green day bitch. So don;t you realise you are betraying the punk ethic.
While all 3 could be used to apply to art or music movements, in terms of how they're generally used they're nothing more than marketing terms that describe the exact same thing (and encompass all of the music from the previous marketing strategy), but came into vogue at different times.
New wave wasn't even really a movement, it was a marketing term. If you look through record-industry marketing from the 80's and 90's you can see the exact same music that was labelled "new wave" was later marketed as "post modern" in the late 80's and "alternative" from the early 90's to now. There are radio stations that play "80's alternative" now and it's just stuff that was marketed as "new wave" or "post modern".
Punk needs to b against something like The Sex Pistols were against Hippies. If there isn't somehing getting put down by the music then it ain't punk!
YOURE A MORON!!! NEW WAVE EXISTS!!! DEVO WAS NEW WAVE!!! BLONDIE WAS NEW WAVE!!! Youre just refusing to admit that a kind of music you dont understand exists.
Wow I would think people would be smarter than this. OK... let me further explain what everyone isn't getting. I'm tired of getting emails about this shit.
"new wave" as a genre.... DOES NOT EXIST. New Wave was a movement in MUSIC that occured in the 1970s-1980s (WIKIPEDIA, motherfucka, DO YOU USE IT?).
@bl4ckm4ge bl4ckm4ge First of all Dead Kennedys & Bad Religion were not New Wave in any stretch of the imagination those two bands were straight up punk rock. Devo is a new wave band. There is such a genre & most of it came from England in the 80's. This type of music was post punk & considered Modern Rock music to some as a label. In closing some really unique & creative bands came out of that genre that are still influential today, brought synthesizers to the world....
The POINT the speaker is TRYING to make is that MTV and other corporate hotshots that know little to nothing about the actual structure of music labeled growing popular bands like Bad Religion, Dead Kennedys, DEVO, etc as NEW WAVE.... but they sold it as a genre, not as part of a movement.
He says that the genre, is nonexsistant, that it is part of a massive movement. See also FILM MOVEMENTS, ART MOVEMENTS, LITERATURE MOVEMENTS, POST-WAR MOVEMENTS, etc.
By this standard, there is also no such thing as Rock & Roll, Punk, Rockabilly, etc.

businessmen/corporate bosses invented the term new wave....to make profit,
LET`S FACE IT, PUNK GREW, IT PROGRESSED, IT BECAME THE SEED ....BANDS LIKE SIOUXSIE ETC. PROGRESSED, THEY TOOK THEIR MUSIC TO A HIGHER LEVEL,
POST PUNK IS REALLY THE CORRECT TERM

There were genres (he lists several), but new wave was just something that people would say because they were afraid to call themselves "punk".
So, no, new wave doesn't exist, but genres certainly do.
