What they intended with this song was evident within the first three notes: straight lift from I Want to Hold You Hand. Not that there's anything really wrong with that. It's kind of cool.
Yeah, it kinda sounds like a mix of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "A Hard Day's Night" (particularly the bridge), but it's still pretty catchy on its own.
I saw the Knickerbockers back in the late '60s in Florida. They knocked me out and I rushed to buy their album, which I still own. The guitar player was excellent, as good as any of the great English players. Don't know why they didn't achieve greater success, they were much more than a Beatles knock off.
Imitation is the best form of flattery. Sure, these guys "ripped off" the Mersey sound of The Beatles. But, on the other hand, American artists such as Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, and The Everly Bros influenced The Beatles. Early 1960s Rock from either side of the pond just augmented each other. It was all great! A Merry Christmas 2011 to all!
Definately sounds like something from the Hard Day's Night sessions but blatant rip-off of The Beatles or not it is a really good song! (But then again, who DOESN'T rip off The Beatles???
"The song is most famous today for being blatantly derivative of contemporary songs by The Beatles, down to the imitation of John Lennon on the lead vocal and the Paul McCartney-style vocal whoops before the guitar solo and later in the song." That's taken from Wikipedia. It was easier than me having to say it.
Lies - The Knickerbockers [Bergenfield, New Jersey] - No.20 on 11/1965 - "The best and most accurate early Beatle-esque imitation ever recorded; the lead vocals were a dead ringer for John Lennon." - Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968 [Rhino BOX SET] (Disc 1)-1998.

@Steve915 there was a teen magazine in a library that odd pictures of the knickerbockers lovin spoonful walker brothers they through it out I have a friend that worked with buddy randell at a regular telemarketting job he was nice .
@Steve915 See if you can find "One Track Mind." It was their second hit song, that didn't make Billboards Top 40. It can be found on Even More Nuggets-Classics From The Psychedelic Sixties. Rhino CD R275754. Great song!!!!!
Beatle vocal harmonies and the lead singer is copying Lennon's diction style. The guitar bends are copied after George as well and heavy drums like Ringo. This is somewhat like the Beatles' "Paperback Writer"
Great, great bunch of musicians. I have a fair ear for music and was convinced this was a Beatles song even though I was closely familiar with all the Fab Fours' tunes. That's interesting to hear about providing different musical styles for the Dick Clark organization. Hey, Thanks.
The Kickerbockers had an abiity to sound like ANYONE! Came from their talent, and playing in bars!...They were great!... They did all the backing tracks for ALL the performers on the Dick Clark TV show, WHERE THE ACTION IS...where they also were regulars...Yet, the tracks don't sound like they're being done by the same band!...This info is from an interview in liner notes on a multi-disc set done on the band a few years ago...
@Rowlandph dick clark never the worlds most loyal person fired them because they didnt have long hair and replaced them with hard times after much hype
best beatle impression ever ...better than "stuck in the middle"...bought this when it came out in 65 in England ..and I asked for the "new"Beatles single
and record store couldn't find it...Jimmy Saville played it and I thought he was larking about when he said it "was by The Knickerbockers"
Is there anyone who didn't think this was the Beatles when they first heard the song? It's way more than "Beatlesque." It sounded more like the Beatles than the Beatles did.
Saw this band live in 1966 in Burien, Wa. USA, in a club converted from an indoor archery range. Van Morrison and Them also played there in 1966, in a now legendary crappy performance and tour.

I like this song. American sound, with an obvious British influence, and the guy singing sounds just like John Lennon!

John Lennon heard this song on the radio and thought to himself "I don't remember singing this one."

Good ear by the way; I can hear the slight similarity.
Wanna hear another more obvious similarity in song?
Listen to The Pretty Things', "Don't Bring Me Down", then listen to E.L.O.'s, "Don't Bring Me Down".....I mean, WTF, dude !? - XD
