The lyrics aren't really, "Bruce." It's actually supposed to be Gruss, a german greeting. But after a while, Jeff started singing "Bruce" because that is what everyone believed the misheard lyric to be.

The perception is that, following the title line, Jeff Lynne shouts "Bruce!" However, according to liner notes, he is actually saying a made-up word "Grroosss". This is similar to a German word for "greeting". However, after the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Jeff Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows.

Bruce refers to no one in particular its simply how the audience ended up signing the lyric when the song was done in concert. The original lryic is "groos".

That's what's in the lyrics in the liner notes.

Sometimes a weird word will just stick. I have a band, and one line in a song we do is "O, Geneva." For some reason when we were rehearsing it, I got confused at one point and yelled "Katerina!"

It stuck, now we just use that as the lyric. It was a brain burp.

So maybe when they were rehearsing, Lynne didn't know what to sing, and "groose" came out. So he kept it.
