Another good place is the Claymont Steak Shop in Claymont, DE, just off I-495 near the PA/DE state line on Phila. Pike (Rt. 13). Claymont's rolls aren't the best, but they give you plenty of meat (ask for extra cheese).

Make a right on 13, go over 495, and Claymont Steak Shop is on the left past Archmere Academy. The first thing I noticed when I had my first Tony Luke's cheesesteak was the grease...it was the best tasting I've ever had! LOL Also, their regular Italian hoagies are terrific, just as they are at Dalessandro's. And no Whiz....white American!

When I lived in Philadelphia (Germantown) in the late 60's to early 70's, never heard of Cheeze Whiz on a cheesesteak. In fact, most of the places I frequent don't offer Whiz. I was always taught that the traditional cheesesteak had white American, a pizza steak had provolone with sauce. I think they started using Whiz as a short cut. So I guess I'm still a traditionalist...white American!

Invented here in good ol' Chester County, scrapple is the FIRST all-American pork product ever invented. Habberset over Hatfield any day, but anyone in the know goes to the butcher for some real, genuine stuff. Scrapple is the best food ever to come from the East Coast, if anyone reading this gets the chance to try it, take it!
@EmCeeSTD My favorite brand of scrapple is still Kirby and Holloway. You can get it in supermarkets in DE (it's made in Harrington, DE) and Mars Supermarkets in Baltimore. I always go back to that brand. I've tried the homemade scrapples at various PA Dutch markets, but K & H has a good bite to it!

99% of people who live in Philadelphia could give a shit about any one of these places, or South Philadelphia, in general. Saying cheesesteaks or South Philadelphia (where both of these are located) being an accurate representation of Philadelphia as a whole would be like saying mid Manhattan would be an accurate representation of ALL of New York City, or horse-riding cowboys for Texas.

I just went to Geno's for the first time today. Geno's steaks are great but there have some racist signs outside their store. The area has a lot of hispanics and they have signs saying "if you dont speak english we wont serve you" and about "we're in america, why do we have to press one for english".

pats and genos deserve there respect for tradition but they are small and high priced.Cheese whiz or wit out...i like american which most other store's serve in philly.Italian kitchen on baltimore ave. and larry's across from st joesphs university is some of the best in my opinion and both fullsize and under $7.

Why do Pat's and Geno's always get the publicity, when, in fact, they make the most mediocre cheesesteaks in Philadelphia? Tony Luke's is much better, and so is Dalessandro's in Roxborough. Most any place makes a better cheesesteak in Philadelphia than Pat's and Geno's!

@EmCeeSTD Sorry, but Pat's ain't the best! LOL Try Dalessandro's on Henry Avenue near Walnut Lane in Roxborough. Another good place is the Claymont Steak Shop in Claymont, DE, just off I-495 near the PA/DE state line on Phila. Pike (Rt. 13). Claymont's rolls aren't the best, but they give you plenty of meat (ask for extra cheese).

@RickC50 I was actually at Pat's earlier today, kinda disappointed that they had my steak ready in 10 seconds, kinda small, too. Tony Luke's is always hot and fresh, great portions and greasy as hell (in a good way) but Tony Luke's is also EXPENSIVE as SHIT. Now that I think, I might like Tony Luke's better... Also, I live in West Chester, not familiar with Claymont Steak Shop though.

@EmCeeSTD If you're in West Chester, one day drive down 202, make a left at Naaman's Road, take Naaman's to Rt.13. Make a right on 13, go over 495, and Claymont Steak Shop is on the left past Archmere Academy. The first thing I noticed when I had my first Tony Luke's cheesesteak was the grease...it was the best tasting I've ever had! LOL Also, their regular Italian hoagies are terrific, just as they are at Dalessandro's. And no Whiz....white American!

@EmCeeSTD Actually, the cheesesteak was invented 20 years before Cheeze Whiz (came out in 1951). When I lived in Philadelphia (Germantown) in the late 60's to early 70's, never heard of Cheeze Whiz on a cheesesteak. In fact, most of the places I frequent don't offer Whiz. I was always taught that the traditional cheesesteak had white American, a pizza steak had provolone with sauce. I think they started using Whiz as a short cut. So I guess I'm still a traditionalist...white American!

At least someone else on here is actually informed and enjoys the cheesesteak, it seems everyone got on here to trash them. It's Philly tradition, I wasn't born and raised here, but there's some things in Philly you have to respect... the cheesesteak is one of them.

@EmCeeSTD I was raised about an hour from the city in DE after moving from NY and developed a love affair with Philadelphia that has been going on since 1960. I live outside Baltimore, but still consider Philadelphia my second favorite city (NYC of course if first!). And yes, the cheesesteaks and hoagies are wonderful as is scrapple!!!

@RickC50 Ohhhh man, don't get me started on scrapple... some people will never know the most sublime of all breakfast foods in the world, and I feel terrible for them. Invented here in good ol' Chester County, scrapple is the FIRST all-American pork product ever invented. Habberset over Hatfield any day, but anyone in the know goes to the butcher for some real, genuine stuff. Scrapple is the best food ever to come from the East Coast, if anyone reading this gets the chance to try it, take it!

@EmCeeSTD My favorite brand of scrapple is still Kirby and Holloway. You can get it in supermarkets in DE (it's made in Harrington, DE) and Mars Supermarkets in Baltimore. I always go back to that brand. I've tried the homemade scrapples at various PA Dutch markets, but K & H has a good bite to it!

99% of people who live in Philadelphia could give a shit about any one of these places, or South Philadelphia, in general. Saying cheesesteaks or South Philadelphia (where both of these are located) being an accurate representation of Philadelphia as a whole would be like saying mid Manhattan would be an accurate representation of ALL of New York City, or horse-riding cowboys for Texas.
No one in Philadelphia gives a shit about any of these things or South Philly. Or Rocky, for that matter.
