  • LOL - yes! I remember watching that show religeously when I was 11....sort of a glimpse of what we thought the future would bring in the 1970's and beyond...it would be fun to see it again and see which new inventions stuck and which ones were duds. Thanks for posting!

  • as a 9 year old in Winnipeg when this 'opening credits' song to the series 'Here Comes The Seventies' came on, I was on overdrive, sensorily speaking - this song created by these artists sparked my desire to further appreciate ambient music which was then in its nascent stages. Tangerine Dream, Brian Eno, and then on and on - but these men were among the pioneers in my eyes/ears.... Thank you gentlemen! And thanks for introducing me to the term "mellotron"!

  • i played with doug for a gig with the wales on hanson island with a guy called paul spong . JMC was there too we played to the wales and a recording was made i was the percussionist

    ZAne

  • Doug Pringle from Syrinx went on to join a PUNK band called the Poles

  • thx for share, yeah old old cool stuff

  • thanks for the remaster....sounds good without the scratches!

    wordofgord

  • This band got me hooked into electronic music and was able to get my hands on that record...

  • Are there episodes available anywhere?

  • Great tune, have not head it for years, brings back great memories. the show was cool, i was about 10. I remember, i think, they showed the band playing by a body of water during the extended end credits. Where can you see the show? I checked YouTube but keep getting the song.

    all the best

  • I had forgotten about the nekkid lady walking into the Lake, Butthen,I've forgotten a lot of things. Great show, great tune. I saw them perform at Vanier College in MTL in autumn of 71. I didn't get it. But a few years later I listened to Long Lost Relatives and was blown away.

  • That was a scary show for a kid but I watched anyway; There was a jukebox in one of the pod/pavillions at Ontario Place in year one. It had all Can/Con. I sat there all day waiting for Syrinx to come on every once in a while.

  • i found it !!!

  • I miss that naked lady's butt too. But I found the show dark and apocalyptic, especially being a kid at the time. I thought we'd never make it out of the decade. The boomers who made it were the A-bomb generation.

  • The only thing wrong with this tune is that it's TOO DAMNED SHORT!!!

  • The band was playing by Lake Ontario by Ontario Place

  • This song reminds of so much, the future, the whole world, the idea that there was a future... now it makes me sad...

  • This music should be re-released. The album is brilliant!

  • a special love for this one

  • I saw these guys, I think on Center Island as it was an outdoor concert. What ever became of them ? We already know what became of the naked lady's butt.

  • @JoeGancher John Mills-Cockell is a regular collaborator in sound design in Theatre now. He writes a lot of scores.

  • Must be 'cause I'm female... but what *I* remember from the opening of "Here Come The Seventies" isn't the naked lady, but the dude with the jetpack on his back, rocketing into the sky. How desperately I wanted the seventies to arrive so that I could grow up and get a jetpack of my very own....

P.S. Thanks for the music :-)

  • very interesting music!!

  • Yes, do remenber the naked lady getting into the water at the beginning of the show.......keep hoping for her to get out toward US at the end....memories!!

  • what will the seventies be like!?

  • I was 11 years old and I loved this show with the tec stuff, but what I liked most was the naked lady walking into the water naked. Love ladies butts till this day

  • HERE COME THE SEVENTIES. I remember that TV series. This was the opening theme tune where it showed a back view of a naked lady on the beach walking into the water. Does anyone recall?

  • Read the whole comments section. People have talked of little else in it.

  • Yes I see, so you obviously recall. That was the best part of that series, well for me and many of us at the young approaching pubic age that we were at the time. I bet she was paid a lot for that roll.

  • I remember that Joe Campanella was the host along with a blonde chick from Toronto. I thought that the show was done by Global TV? The whale that killed the trainer in Orlando came from Vancouver BC, from the Tillicum area - hence the name Tillikum.

  • This program aired on CTV stations, some years before Global existed.

  • Was the host Joe Campanella, though? I remember Joe co-hosting a science show with a girl with a catchy name - so catchy that I forgot it.

  • OK. Now I remember- I was thinking of "What Will They Think of Next" co-hosted by Joe Campanella and Tiiu Leek. It ran on Global in 1976 or so.

I do have a 45RPM of "Tilicum" kicking around.

  • @TheCountAlucard

You are thinking of "Science International" with Joseph Campanella and Tiiu Leek. "Here Come the Seventies" was several years earlier.

  • @TheCountAlucard I have no recollection of joe campenella??

  • @jsilence418 Joe Campanelle was my mistake. I was confusing "Here Come the Seventies" with the Global TV production "What Will They Think of Next" hosted by Joe Campanella and Tiu Leek. He also starred in several US weekly productions. Always played a tough guy or cop.

  • @unhooked25 I just e-mailed a friend with that same rememberence.I found it one time but cant now yeah...takes us back eh?

  • Comment removed

  • @williamkevin You got that right my friend, it sure does. Back to 1971/72, the days of striped pants, dune buggies, confederate boots, clackers not to mention the obsession and fear of the idiom, known back then as "Greaser" or "Grease ball".

  • @unhooked25 Yes, the naked lady walking into the water, I was 12 and loved Thursday nights just for her.

  • @viscount100 Well we must be near enough the same age. That's how old I was at that time. Cheers to good memories.

  • @unhooked25 Ah yes the memories, Here come the '70's at 9:30, Ghost story at 10:00, then Benny Hill 'til 11:30 when Johnny came on.

  • @unhooked25 Yeah. I was maybe eight when I saw that beautiful woman walking into the water. Good thing my parents weren't around at that minute. I'm hoping someone posts that intro -- still the best intro of any TV show ever.

  • @unhooked25 Yes I remember this very well ,on black and white TV

YOU MAY BE FROM USA , BECAUSE HERE IN Canada, they took out

the naked lady with the beautiful ass and they only showed the lake

and i thought ... it must be lake Ontario.

  • @steelnfire No I'm from Canada and I don't recall them taking out the naked lady with the beautiful ass maybe they did but I just don't recall and yes like you, I recall this also on black & white TV which was still quite common back then. But it was fond memories all same. Don't it make you wonder who or where that lady is now, for all you know you might have passed her on the street or she might have even served you in a restaurant etc. We'll never know.

  • Respond to this video... this was a great tune... otherwise i would have forgotten it completely.

  • @unhooked25 Me too! I was 10 years old in 71, hmmmm just feel like I am 29 forever! But really, its nice to see that I wasn't the only one who remembered. It was beautiful. xx

  • @colleenlovesbolan Yes beautiful every square inch of her despite our young childhood age.

  • This was the music for a performance of the Toronto Dance Theatre I saw as a teenager.

Any chance we could hear more? Thanks.

  • Wow, I was 10 years old at the time, and this bit of music launched me into electronics and electronic music.

No flying cars, or computer kitchens yet, but I'd like to see the intro by these guys on YouTube here...

    Thanks.

  • sure would be nice to have some of the other cuts from the group posted. I had the 1st and 2nd albums, would realy like to hear 'field hym' again.

  • Fabulous song from my favourite album. I have Tillicum on a cd called Made In Canada Vol. 4. My impression of the show opening was that the woman was walking into the surf off Olympic Beach on Toronto Island. I have both Syrinx albums on vinyl...copied on to disc...as well as JMC's Heartbeat, Gateway and The Third Testament. Great stuff. Definitely ahead of his time.

  • Confession here...I was maybe 12 when this show was on. I would watch the show every week just to see the opening. Just like for kids of an earlier generation the only option was National Geographic.

  • Nice hearing that one!

I wonder if anybody has photos or 8mm film of this band to share. Would make a nice 'video' for some of their songs.

  • I should be able to post a vinyl transfer of Syrinx "Long Lost Relatives" in the next week or two...

    I'll get on it.

  • Great! and thanks... But I would like to see the opening video with the girl at the beach. She was phenominal.

    -Bob

  • You're right-she was, and is. I have an episode on video.

  • Wow! Do you have a way to digitize the opening and post it here? A lot of people would love to see that bit of history again!

  • Sad to say-I do not. My humblest apologies.

  • Record it with a camcorder!

That would be better than nothing at least.

  • It was indeed phenomenal!

  • @BMGBOX Yes, we really must see that girl walking into the water, just to make sure we're talking about the same show, just to confirm you understand. no perverted motives at all. None, but i must see the naked lady one more time.

  • I would very, very, very much like a copy of this in FLAC/WAV/reeaaaaally high quality MP3 format. This is fantastic.

  • This is where good detective skills would come in handy, as I wouldn't know where to find such a thing. Good luck!

  • I remember this show so well! I was only 10 years old. Watched it all the time! I thought the theme was a bit different though. I remember scenes of someone playing keyboard, and buildings in the intro. To bad we can't find the episodes on line! That would be so cool!

  • The big deal about this show's intro was the beautiful, naked, blonde showing off her bum as her strolled towards the water

(see hasablad69's earlier comments). I was 12 at the time and, as a mnemocist,,

I know that what you vaguely remember is the ending, where the theme song was played by the group Syrinx while standing on a lawn before a river with a launching

gantry in the background as well as a palm tree (or two) in the early evening about seven p.m. (EDT) = Florida and Cape Kennedy.

  • I remember the show "Here Comes the 70's" and as a seven year old girl, I thought this theme song was about the coolest thing I'd ever heard! At that point, my exposure to popular music was CFTR (a.m radio) so this really lit me up. Thanks for posting this and giving me a delightful blast from my past! xx

  • I remember the closing scene of Here Comes the 70's. It made a definite impact on a ten year-old boy! It sure made me watch the credits! I wonder if they named it Tillicum after the street in Vancouver.

  • The composer, John Mills-Cockell, created a recent work, Concerto of Deliverance, that's in the spirit of Tillicum, but a thousand times more expansive. To hear samples, just Google "Concerto of Deliverance".

  • syrinx used to play at my high school.

they did a soundtrack for a cbc production with Malcolm Muggeridge called A Third Testament.

    can anyone post that?

  • *****

  • There is one very serious flaw with this piece...

    IT'S TOO FRIGGIN' SHORT!

  • The only thing as permanent as change, is change itself. That's life - ridin' high in April, shot down in May.....

How are you, Mojoman? Yes, I'm still around - haven't forgotten you.....

  • It makes me cry cause it reminds me of the days and months just before the 70s came in and hearin this tune on radio and on my 45 rpm and look where we all are now

  • This song always makes me cry - it reminds me of Fred Napoli's baritone narration, channel 13 out of Kitchener (and the brand new CTV), and the early 70s, when summers were hot, I was alone, and the future seemed dark. and foreboding. A haunting melody, avant garde electronics. And the closing vignette of the show showed the band playing somewhere like Florida, near Cape kennedy at sunset (or som I thought). Puberty, what a bitch of a time, eh?

  • As I read your comments I suddenly understood why this music evokes strange feelings in me.

For me as well, this music reminds me of a time when life was still complicated but we had the knowledge that when our time came to do something about injustice and inhumanity we would step up and do our thing.

Aw, to be young again....to hell with that!!

  • We heard a lot of rumors back in the 70s, or maybe there was a lot less strychnine in the 'cid, but I heard it was John Mills-Cockell who played the moog on ELP's first album (uncredited) & taught Keith Emerson how to play synthesizer, etc. Any truth to this? Regardless, thanks for this blast from the past. I had to beg my parents to let me stay up until the theme song of Here Come the 70s was over. Remember the 3 of them playing it on a rock in the Pacific? Neat.

  • YEAH! I TOTALLY REMEMBER THAT!!!!

  • I've seen the group Syrinx perform live on several occasions, which was amazing! The recorded music failed to adequately convey the power and nuances of the live music, although, like most people, I wore out my LP's. I've also contacted John directly by e-mail and received a CD from him with both Syrinx LP's on one CD. The sound is okay, since the original records have vanished long ago, but a digital re-mastering of their music would be in good order and much appreciated!

    Thanks for the post.

  • I mastered a CD for myself from a good vinyl copy of the album (Long Lost Relatives) about 7 years ago, then got a copy of the thing from John Mills-Cockell as well. At that time, he advised me that he'd secured the rights to release the album on CD, but I have a sense that the master tapes didn't survive, and so whatever he released would most likely be taken from vinyl. Not sure though. "Ibistix" and "Field Hymn" on that same album are other favorites.

  • I loved this when I was a kid.

    Sounds like Weather Report.

  • I have both SYRINX LP's...they're a bit buggered but playable.I just emailed John Mills-Cockell begging for a nicer cut. Here's hoping.

  • I have this album...Those guys were WAY ahead of their time and the TV show "Here come the 70s" was pretty good too...thanks for posting this...it sure as hell brings back alot of memories...too bad that this song is only 1:54 long :-(

  • I have been looking for this for 35 years. My mother first introduced me to this when I was about 8 years old..........ground breaking stuff !!!!!!!

  • Atta boy mojo! I key "Here Come The Seventies" in the YT search box and up pops the link to this gem(m).

I should have know you posted it. Thanks. cinq*z

  • John-Mills Cockell is doing the musical direction for a show I'm in over in Victoria. Who knew he was such a ladykiller??

  • only in canada?

    pity!

wow, would i love to have that 45!

    lost, maybe

    but not forgotten!

    thank you for your vid!

    right on!!!

  • You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it. You can buy a copy of the single right now for under $20 from a site called gemm. (They don't let us put URLs in the reply boxes.) Go there, type Syrinx in the search box, select Artist from the dropdown menu and go. It could be at your house next week. Good luck!

  • Holy Flashback!!! I still hum this song when I'm in a techie mood. Thanks for posting. I remember watching the show but I only remember the slo-mo crash test of a 747 in the opening, not the woman in the water. But I'd like to see that now! I was a seven year old kid hyped on Star Trek, Thunderbirds, Joe 90, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and the Apollo program - this show and music fit right in.

  • I really wish both of Syrinx's would be issued on CD.

  • It took True North 30 years to release Murray McLauchlan's "Boulevard" on CD (and they screwed it up), and the vast majority of the TN catalogue has never been digitized. Of course it would be great, but don't hold your breath. I have a feeling there's more to it than anyone is letting on, and I have the feeling that it isn't nice.

  • If anyone out there knows who the curvy woman was, I would love to know!

  • She's most likely somebody's grandma now. Still interested?

  • Don't forget-Raquel Welch is someone's grandmother now too! LOL

  • I think that there was a soft-porn film that

came out in the late 60s, either '68 or '69 (ahem;sorry) that was entitled "The Roman Baths" or "The Baths Of Rome" or something like that and I think that I remember being told at the time that that was the source of the nudie shot in ques-

tion. Baring in mind ... (uhp, sorr-ee) Ah,

bearing in mind that the CTV had just been formed and begun broadcasting, to put such a risque opening at the start of the intro to a science program was bold.

  • Interesting. Who told you this-someone from CTV? Apparently, CTV never got any flack from the censors.

  • No. They apparently didn't, which, given the state of alternate television content in this country at the time, as I've already stated, was a very bold, calculated move which, I'm sure that they hoped, would create controversy and free publicity for a brand new network. However, given the fact that the intro was for a science show pretty well guaranteed that most people in this country would never see it anyway and I

believe that the CTV executives knew it. So you had a racy intro.

  • i dont know what you are referring to

    i would like to know

  • "Long Lost Relatives" album cover art by the great Bart Schoales of Toronto........

  • I too recall the "curvy woman entering the water.

I also remember them frequently discussing how our telephone (line) will one day be used for various tasks other than verbal communication. And how "Dick Tracy" type of phones will become a reality.

Oh ya...if only they could "save" the cartoons so I could watch them later I thought.

  • THIS IS JUST GREAT! I never would have believed that this song would ever be posted on YT! You've outdone yourself mojo-man!

Yes, I have this unique LP.....if you ever have a chance to listen to 'December's Angel', give it a listen; you'll be glad you did!

IMHO, that was one of the best 70's shows going on Canadian TV at that time.

  • I've outdone myself, eh? Wait 'til I start posting the good stuff!

I have both of Syrinx' albums on True North. It's been a long time since I heard them, but I'll have to give them a spin soon. I may have to go see a man first about a thing.

  • I'm loving it!

  • Here Come The Seventies, with the woman walking into the water. Can't remember much about the show, just the woman and the music.

  • I think that the curvy woman dissappearing into the water is about all I can recall about Here Come the Seventies as well. The theme music was great!

  • Same here! That seems to be about my only memory of the show. I know it was about technological innovations and the like, but I couldn't tell you one thing I ever saw on it. But I remember the opening sequence and the music!

  • She wasn't wearing a stitch either if I recall.

  • lol!!! and they say that men don't have good memories when it comes to detail...you just proved them all wrong!

  • But Val I was just a wee boy of 9 or 10 then! Young boys do have good memories I guess. :)

  • .....she wasn't! LOL!

  • I am glad she wasn't wearing a stitch she was the focal point of that intro.
