Store bought cages are not big enough for guinea pigs. They ones they sell are basically glorified litter boxes. Who wants to sleep where they pee? Check cavycagesDOTcom for inexpensive cage ideas.
It's not an agree or disagree type of thing. It's simply not enough space to give them the room to run around that they need. Would YOU want to have your toilet, kitchen and bedroom all in one tiny space? They need extra room for exercise. However, as long as you take them out twice a day for an hour to run around, it should suffice but NO pine or cedar bedding.

No, I never trust Petco or any chain pet stores to give accurate information. They market the yogurt treats and exercise balls for guinea pigs and both are bad for guineas. Their goal is to sell products.
If every guinea pig you've owned has been on pine bedding, you didn't do enough research. Before I even brought any home, I made sure to do lots of research. GuinealynxDOTcom and cavycagesDOTcom are good resources. I also asked people who owned guinea pigs.
If it was kiln-dried pine, that's the one exception that is acceptable to use of the pine variety.

Your guinea-pigs are SO unbelievably cute when the do the "popcorn-dance". Mine used to do it a lot when they were younger, but now they are getting a bit lazy with the years, the oldest turning 4 this year.
It seems that the younger they are, the more they popcorn. And indeed my dancers are getting more lazy. Though I still am collecting for te next video's (they will be less dark)

I have a guinea pig named Nutmeg, but she is new, and as such is pretty scared an won't popcorn at all. Plus, my rabbit Ragamuffin keeps trying to make her have his babies. D:

Oh and I almost forgot this very neat trick: shake the foodbox.
Most of the time it will cause some bouncing here. :)
Ofcourse the cavies will have to have the assosiation of the shaking sound with the appearance of food.
So first shake the box, then give them the food.

my guinea pigs never popcorn :( not once.
any tips? (they have a proper sized cage and toys, etc... I let them out on the floor (of course with my supervision) every once in a while.

Give them plenty of running space either for living or for floortime.
Then shake a box or bag with food....
There's no music for guinea pigs like the rythm of food.
Works like a charm with my hungry ones. :)

The easiest way of giving guinea pigs a big home is hooking up several playpens (the ones used for bunnies) on a liquidresistant surface.
It's even cheaper than buying a cage and gives way more room.

I disagree--my guinea pig has a "store-bought" cage, and the vet said he's quite healthy (he was even surprised when I said my pig was 5 years old!)
Guinea pigs will designate one or two areas of their cages as bathroom areas if there's no litter box area.

actually, when i bought my first guinea, i got him from a professional breeder, who has one many ribbons for her pigs. she uses pine bedding.

Your vet shouldnt be surprised that your pig was 5 years old. Average age for a guinea pig is 2-5 years.
