  • i think the southern accent is interesting. I pretty much don't have a pronounced accent (from toronto), there r some words, but hearing the southern accent, it sounds really cool :D

  • This video is great. It's so funny how the way we speak baffles non-Southerners.

  • who knew yankees could be so rude and use curse words every other word?! wow...and you call southerns retarded and ignorant.

  • Grew up in the south...common misconception that we have such a deep accent...mostly just a few words or phrases...though I do not believe that the northern accent is something to be awed by because it has its own quirks (some not so flattering)...It's whatever

  • Hey you are pretty!! can I merrie you?

  • Im from texas and we use our words much longer and we say yall alot

  • I like your accent.....

  • The most beautiful language in the world is the southern ascent.

  • @TexasRebel1965 It's spelled accent and accents aren't languages.

  • Yeah in your dreams, the southern accent makes people sound like hicks!

  • @TexasRebel1965 Southern people are fuckin retarded!!!!!!!!..learn how to talk morons..stop stretching, and drawing out all your words!!!!!!!!

  • @5tonyvvvv Douchebag. I think we city people talk too fast.

why are u up so late..dont u have to go to walmart tomorrow and by diapers for your kids.that will grow up and be dumb and broke just like u...and have bad teeth..

  • @5tonyvvvv Wal-Mart is open all night.

  • @TexasRebel1965 amen!

  • The food here is good, greasy and heavy. Like we say, "It'll make you wanna slap yer granny it's so good." Pies, cakes, homemade jams and jellies. And up north you can't get some of the ingredients. Just like here we can't get cajun ingredients. I've had people ask me how in the world I make my biscuits. Well - ya gotta work air into the dough. No way to tell ya. You just have to watch. It's a southern tradition that's passed down.

  • The fried vegetables are in like a cornmeal batter. The desserts are like a pancake batter. Grits. I've been asked what "a" grit was. No such thing. It's plural - grits. And they are good if you cook them with salt in the water. If not, they taste like wallpaper paste. Commercial restraunt grits are horrible like Waffle House. You eat them with butter and salt - not sugar. Casseroles are also really big. "Hot plate" or "Hot dish" its called up north.

  • High blood pressure - you've got "high blood." Diabetes - you've got "sugar". People still use old medical terms like "the gripe" or "the dropsy." And of course everybody says, "Awwwww sheee-it!" Yes everything is fried including pickles, oreos, snickers and twinkies. Now the twinkies are just nasty but don't knock the snickers! Or the pickles! How? Batter dipped. Fried Green Tomatoes. Fried squash. Fried okra. Biscuits and gravy.

  • My mother was always very big on pronouncing words correctly. She tried to the get the "country" out of us kids. Around here, "Via-duct" is pronounced "Vi-dock". You can hear Mother's eyebrows crinkle when somebody says that. LOL! I'll get her goat too and say things like, "No I ain't not neither." BOING goes her little mainspring. LOL! Another one is "vomit." They say "vomick." Or "Twicest" instead of "twice."

  • And I get asked this all the time, "Is it true that hillbillies sit up in the mountains in their rocking chairs with a shotgun in their lap?" YES! And if you get too close to one that's gotta still, pot field or meth lab - they'll shoot and ask questions later!! You have no business being off the beaten path in the mountains unless you are from there. Even out of county tags on your car let alone out of state.

  • I don't know how to describe the rhythm in print. It's kind of "dum-dee-dum-dee-dum-dee-dum." It bounces. But I'll tell ya - you can knock the accent all you want to but you are not gonna find people that are sweeter, kinder and more supportive of each other than southerners.

  • Yeah, the first time I ever heard myself on tape I thought, "That's not me!" LOL! But if they call you ignorant - just remember: "Ignorant" you can escape from. "Ignernt" is forever. LOL! I have embraced my suthun accent and there are more people that find it either romantic and amusing than stupid sounding. And it is very funny to try to watch somebody from say Brooklyn try to speak with a suthun accent. Ya got it or ya ain't.

  • You're gettin there! I've giggled a lot. Y's and I's. You still have a bit of a mid-western slant to your speech. But you are right. There's a rhythm to it and that's what you have to get down pat. Learning the words is one thing but keeping that rhythm in sentences is the key. Lord chile, my accent is worse than yours. LOL! And I don't think you are ignorant sweetie. Doin a good job!

  • To start with, any word that ends with "er" change it to "uh". And put the emphasis on the first syllable of the word: MUTH-uh FAWTH-uh SIS-tuh BRUTH-uh And you put a little pause in between the syllable. Drag it out. Water = waw-duh Daughter = Daw-duh Dog = Dawg My ac-cee-unt is a cross between old suthun and Appalachian. To some it's romantic and to other it's just stupid sounding.
  • And drag it out - BRUUHHHHTHuh. LOL! Liiiiiight and Briiiiight. Everything is a Coke - not pop or soda. You just run a lot of things together in a syncopated little patter. Also you turn one syllable words into 2 syllables: "Have" = "Haa-uv" : "Yeah" = "Yey-uh": "Back There" = Back er : "Over there" = Over thar

And you are gonna go to "the" Walmart or "the" Kmart or "the" Kroger.

  • I have Northern relatives so I'm used to spelling things phonetically for them.

Just open your mouth and let a cotton plantation fall out. LOL! And with "L's" you substitue a "w". Fall = "Fawwwwl"; You gotta drag it out. The joke is that we speak so slow because it's so hot down he-uh. Yankees speak fast because it's so cold.

  • With "a's" you sorta add a "y" to it. Fast = "Fayst" You're gonna put "gays" in your car. And you might visit "Nayshvulle Tennuhsee". There's all kinds of different southern dialects depending on where you are. I got the drawl yall and I'm really southern but there are some places in the mountains that even I can't understand a word they are saying. Its like they mumble.

  • Don't ever feel like your accent is embarrassing, be damn proud of it, bc that's how us Southern bell's roll in the south

  • Don't forget "fixin' " as in "I'm fixin to go to the store."

  • @ValorianPrime - Absolutely! And yonder (YONNN-duh). Of course that can mean anywhere. You just point in the general direction, "Go put this in yonder." Holler is another one. My relatives seriously came from Carroll Holler.

  • hey i love country music and i wanna know how to say shame the devil in a southern accent cuz im doin greater tuna 4 a school play plzzzz and thank you

  • @a1ice01395 sorry hun i cant help u

  • @a1ice01395 - Shaaame thuh DEV-ul. The "thuh" is almost like saying "duh". It's almost like a click of the tongue instead of a word.

  • Howdy ya'll i reckon u ant facking an suthun acident i can tell that accient is all urs

  • @acoolpunk LOL thats how they fuckin sound in mississippi, my dad fucked me over having the family move from oregon to mississippi, its a fucked up experience so far...

  • @Rrichthe3 - It takes some gettin used to don't it? It very foreign and slow to you at first but you never lose it. There are phrases or words that if you moved back to Oregon they would still make fun of you. If you are there long enough to develop the southern dialect it will come out in you when you are mad even if you have lived away from it for years.

  • alive....as in the Flyleaf song? ^^ didn't think it was that old

    hun-ee :)

buh-hind <didn't realize that was not normal xD

  • 5:24

This is from watching tv and stuff. they have a standard voice they use and southerners can possibly start to feel they aren't talking "right".

  • this is easy.

    you all - yall

    dog - dawd

  • @BasementFishFilms - there's more to it than that. Learning the words individually is fairly easy but trying to remember it all when you are running sentences together. You gotta get that syncopated rhythm down pat and that takes practice.

  • Lov the accent::)

  • I'm french and i try to hear (and learn...) the differences between the "northern" (especially the east coast accent) and the southern accent and i really love your own one...:-).That's make you so cute...:-). Kisses from France.

  • lol live in houston sounds normal to me just as the people from boston think theres is normal nobodys perfect guys

  • my southern accent is way worse than yours butt hell i love it

  • @emoluva1415 - Oh gosh. Mine is horrible! LOL! I'm from the foothills of Tennessee. When I call around the country on insurance calls I constantly get, "Where are you calling from?" I joke about it but they usually find it fascinating once I make the joke about myself. They loosen up after that.

  • Hey Kaila..I'm doing research for a play I'm doing...southern accents involved...I really enjoyed your part 1 and part 2. Thanks for the help!

  • @rainieday2008 - a lot of uh's. It depends on what accent you want. The old suthun accent is full of "uh's." And the emphasis is on the first syllable and you drag the first syllable out a bit and then put a tiny pause between the syllables. There's a rhythm to it.

  • luv da accent

  • Lol nice vid, awesome

  • omg teach me how to do a southern accent...i wanna kno how to sound stupid on the spot.

  • @dbgb1234 Not funny man.

Just because someone has a southern drawl, doesn't mean we have a poor vocabulary. Thanks!

  • @amandaggogo Does it mean you have bad grammar if you have a southern drawl? *points to your comment*

  • @dbgb1234

    No it does not.

And just because one has a typo, or a grammatical error, does not make them stupid. It's human nature to make mistakes. Chill.

  • I speak southern when I'm really relax and in a really good mood..haha Usually I speak with a standard accent (50%), new yawk accent(20%), and southern (25%), and others

  • oh that singing bit was really good, nice voice you have! I'm currently painting an entire family+staff from 1860's Louisiana. They have (nick)names such as Honey Child, Magnolia Blossom, Idabell Cassin, Alfert... what do you think? I loved watching your video! Very interesting. I live in Europe but have had a fascination with the South for a long time. Love from Holland, Iris x

  • I'm from Tennessee, I love my southern accent. And Im proud to be from the south. I now live in LA and it makes me unique. No need to say your sorry for your southen drawl. Be proud of it....there is nothing wrong with it. The southen accent is not a curse. Its beautiful. :-)

  • lmfao, this actually cracks me up...i live in southern alabama and teaching someone a southern accent that isnt from the south just makes me laugh

  • Southern accents sound fake.

People don't realize there are a lot of Southern accents; that's why Tom Petty's album is called "Southern Accents," plural.

  • hey im actually from alabama i also have a country accent but i love it so i understand lol ! bye

  • it all depends on what accent you are going for, every southern accent is different. i can tell she i from "bama" or some where like that. like people from louisiana sound different, georgia even. i'm from texas and a lot of people don't sound like that, it depends on what area you are in. like "ersaamen" said, "you must live in a rural area." she probably does because hers is very thick.

  • that american southern accent is the best ever i just love it, it's great, where i'm from we all talk the same(NZ) i love that ya'll,keep it real ya'll folks,ya sound great......

  • I'm from MS and my accent is pretty bad. I get real shy when I go up north because my drawl is so bad. To better explain your "love" problem this may make it easier. Dont' say Love, say Looove, you have to have that drawl on the "o"

  • @barqs19 ah im jealous! ive lived in MS all my life and i've been told i have a northern accent... lol. but my southern accent comes out if im really upset or tired when im talking haha

  • nice :)

  • 1:31, you make a very funny sound! ihihihi

You're accent is really sweet! :D

  • Let me help. To explain Southern Dialects, this is a great book.

American dialects : a manual for actors, directors, and writers / by Lewis Herman and Marguerite Shalett Herman.

It's really old and should be found in most libraries. It shows the rhythm and where to place emphasis. It even has a phonetic script to practice with.

  • i catch myself saying buh hine (like there's not a d at all in the word)

and sometimes it's 'muh' instead of my...
