You don't require more practicing just focused practicing, that's it Regardless the bow hold. Rabbath is a composer. Criticizing is good if its positive. Check out paganini capriccio 24 on bass, here on you tube. Catalin Rotaru is amazing.
I disagree on German vs French being easier than latter one on bow control. If you want to play a passage like this just do Sevcik op.2 book and op.3 you can do whatever bow technique you want spiccato volante and other stuff. Just start slowly and move it up a notch every time. Just do these books and believe me they are not hard at all. You can buy the cello versions, (by the way I'm a bass player to German style), which are better than the the crappy Bass editions.
Yes Rabbath is not a violinist, but this supposed breaktrough or his own bow style is nothing new and its not his. His bow hold was applied by cellist Andre Navarra, a long time before Rabbath and his arm position as well. Which by the way is almost 100% similar to Galamians violin teaching principals.
give me a break. this is a bowing exercise.... violinists do them all them time. try them, you might like them. put your first finger all the way out like he does & use flat hair to utilize & control the natural bounce in the stick....
my comment wasnt about violinists in particular, or violinists vs. bass players,
rather about what is and is not a high standard of string playing/music making. sorry that wasnt clear.
in the big picture of music making/string players, etc, this equates to a study, etude, or bowing exercise, both technically and musically. these are the reasons that this clip doesnt hold my interest.
Isn't playing an Etude much better than playing a normal piece for showing how accomplished he isbecause Etudes are meant to practice the technical aspects of musicality?
And Rabbath is not a composer either is he? No he's a bass player. He plays what he needs to play and wants to play to become a better bass player.
Unless you play bass better than him, I suggest you stop criticizing his work. He didn't make this video to show off, someone else did.
@0chizhikpizhik0 get informed! the fact that rabbath use the same bowing in all the piece is because this piece tak its inspiration from trad music: music from "bretagne" in french or "Breiz" in breton...
So it is perfectly correct to use such bow techniques repeatedly ! and here the musicality is perfect...
classical music player need to stop looking at their belly button! here you talk about this like it's a classical music piece ! and it's not !
I'm not saying it's impossible to do on German and practicing more he would be able to do it, but bassman is rightfully justified in saying it's more of a challenge for him as a German player than if he were to be a French player.
i disagree, I think that both German and French have their strengths and weaknesses. Having easier control of the bow is one of the French bows strengths over a German bow.
plus Rabbath is a king of the French bow, example: "the art of the bow". Naturally when playing his own technique he would use his own preference of bow style over others, especially when he's so adept in one style, so most of his techniques are written for the French bow, that's why it would be harder for a German player.
Playing this for my solo performance at TMEA. I'm so physced.

I saw Francois play this at the Adelaide town hall a few years back when he were doing master classes. It was the most amazing concert of my life.

but he's not a violinist is he now?
