  • My son, who is 7, will be having his 15th surgery in 2 weeks. He has had to have a radical (canal wall down) mastoidectomy on his left ear. It looks like a huge open hole, no eardrum, no inner bones. They are trying to save the other ear. Once the canal wall down is done there is no replacing or fixing it. He is allowed to swim. He has a swim mold that goes in his ear to keep the water out.

  • hey guys i am from Britain and i got my operation in dubai and it was a different kind of surgery and that was 2 weeks ago and i am going out running every day i can go on planes now, swim, i will be able to do deep sea diving and i will never need the operation again ps i had a huge cholesteatoma and the doctor went right up to my brain and i am fine so guys if you want anymore information just send me a message

  • wow. they could have cleaned your shit up.

  • @DesignerzOnly It leaks all over the place every few minutes. pretty difficult to keep clean

  • Hehe i have this done 4 x too. Whit 50 / 50 % change to get it again..just 1 part in that is interesting, some gets it all time again and again some dont :D.

So Gongratuilations to those who gets it less than 2 x and muchos painkillers to rest :D.. It is so boring to tell ppls that u cant hear what they say. Hearing is abt to come back to last operated ear and i have learned tricks to gain hearing for some period of time( pulling ear and blowing ear to closed nose(carefully)).

  • not sure what that part is...the last surgury i had the cholesteatoma was on my facial nerve, in my mastoid and ate my incus and malius...all three surgeries they made an incision behind my ear...my other ear is deaf ..always has been...I can only hear extremely loud noises with my ear that gets c-tomas...

  • holy scars!...I have had three surgeries and none of the scarsgo that far foward !...why did they go so far foward...what was your doctors name...

  • @annadilynn Did you have a "radical mastoidectomy" ??

  • @etipsh Radical is pretty intense, you cant swim after having one of those.

  • OH cholesteatoma.

It has been recurring in my ears since i was 13. im now 23.

I have had a total of 5 radical mastoidectomys. 2 on my left and three on my right.

    yep. both ears.

I was really lucky, my hearing is surprisingly really good however. my left ear is the worst. i have hearing aids to wear but i find i can get along pretty well without them.

but basically i will be seeing an ear specialist every 3-6 months for the rest of my life.

  • My son had surgery for a cholesteatoma at three for and it came right back. I got a new fantastic doc for my baby and he did the cholesteatoma with the mastoidectomy like you. He then built my son an internal ear fashoined after the way a cat's ear works and restored his hearing. He was clear for a few years until we had to have a sphenoid cyst removed. My son has really been through it too. As a footnote: the tech that did the MRI told us he had a brain tumor, it turned out he did not.

  • @TheVegancompassion Same to you :)

  • good luck!!! I'm 30 and I had roughly 9 operations on my left ear, I had one of the top doctors in the country and he told me it was something you have to grow out of my last operation was when I was 15.

  • @TheVegancompassion Ill tell you about mine, I have had like 5 or something (im 14 so I cant reall remmeber all of them) But it has been gone for over a year, hopefully it is gone forever!

Well of course it hurts, mine wasnt bad but it didnt feel good!, operation length- couple hours, MY haring is good.
