You don't have a "right". You pay a modem fee to get one from verizon. As long as it connects you to the internet, you're getting what you paid for. Don't like that? Buy your own modems and routers off the internet or at stores (around $75-100 each, so $150-200 for both).
If you have a problem with the service you are getting phone in. Sometimes when you have too high of a speed it actually makes your Internet slower. It could be something with your physical setup or modem configuration. Contact Verizon technical support and tell them exactly what you want.

I too had this problem, they sent me the same modem 20 times i asked them why the shipped outdated modems, and they told me that that is all they had and i said bull so i file don them, and needless to say that didnt help so i am in the process of suing,
when i went to the verizon high speed internet representative, those guys couldnt help for shit. "we werent trained on that field" my ass! verizon is all about taking your cash for BS that is so ridiculous. i dont mean to diss them, but i prefer comcast and DISH network. at least they offer the best . comcast might be costly, but its worth it if they have the best internet services. the only problem is that im not in the right area to get their services.

But mines Black it's a "Verizon Wireless Dsl Gateway" mines a Actiontec Gateway GT704-WG-B I also had a westell 6100 but mines was older, so they gave me this one because I got "7.1 Mbps" which I only get 2 Mbps.. DON'T GET VERIZON DSL "HSI" whatever you call it THEY WILL SCAM EVERY PENNY YOU HAVE!! I'm cancelling!! Hello AT&T!!!! :)
