He is a great musician and as much as I love The Eagles, I was very disappointed in their firing of Don Felder. I read his book as well and I feel it's a shitty thing how he ane Glenn Frey could never see eye to eye. I have their Farwell 1 DVD and it's not the same to see Steuart playing Don's parts. But oh well theyre still a great band and I just wish Felder was still in it. He seems like he's a good guy.
MetallicBill, thankyou for you reply to my comments regarding Don Felder. I am a HUGE Eagles Fan and will always be. I read the book HEAVEN AND HELL by Don Felder and was so disappointed with Frey and Henley. Don't get me wrong, I love them as musicians but as people they are very uncompassionate. Felder is a great musician who just wanted his fair shake, that's all. As for TAKE IT TO THE LIMIT, nobody sang it better than Randy Meisner. Looking forward to hearing from you MetallicBill!
@gordlightfootfan I think people didn't read Felders attempts honestly, they just became BOTHERED by his constant queries about money, I watched the news clip up on YT again, when the book came out, they interviewed Felder, he's expressing how happy he is, however, in the book, his wife convinced him to accept that state of mind about things, he was crushed when he got the word he was out! We were in shock as well. It did divide some fans' loyalties. Many of them bicker on here!
Don should take a bow there at the end, Thank you, Thank You, Thank You. I wondered if he'd ever tour outside Cali. His daughter Leah is on the side of the stage there, and oddly, my own elder Sister is Leah as well!
@jimmydcap And Felder said he'd be in the band for his entire life, he pleaded to be back in, and they still axed him, While I enjoy the Eagles as they are, I think that deal stinks, they alienated every damn member of the band with the Ego tripping
If you don't think you can tell the difference between Don and Steuart Smith go back and look at some of the videos from 1977 with Don nd Joe sliging it out, Stueart is a great guitar player and copies Dons parts well. But when you go see Felder the next time he's in your area he wrote the licks and kicks ass playing them... i am a die hard Eagles fan since 1972 have seen them over 100 times, theres no comparission really.... go back look at walk away from the houston show and Turn to Stone.
@jaydog1028 I give props to Stu as well, it's like Dave Mustaine leaving Metallica, he absolutely HATES Kirk Hammett, I believe, but they're both competent musicians
mrbarleymob, I respect your comment. Yes Steuart Smith is very talented but I do believe that I could tell the difference if it was him playing or Don Felder playing. Technically, they are both very strong and although it may be HARD do differentiate who is playing between the Eagles of Old (Felder) and the modern day Eagles (Smith) I LOOOOOOVE the sound and FEEL that Don Felder created. Both guitar players are so talented but Felder CREATED some of thw sounds that Smith now plays. Thanks.
i miss Don felder with the eagles. the eagles is where he belongs. screw copyrights and royalties. he brought that rock n roll vibe to the eagles along with walsh. ive got to admit i like their early country rock sound . i like the hotel calif line up too.
wiseup1000, I couldn't agree with you more. Don was such an integral part of the growth and change in their sound in the mid 70's. I saw them in Toronto two years ago and yes, they were great but its just not the same feeling watching Steuart Smith playing all those great Felder licks. Mr. Smith is very talented but he just isn't Don. Remember the connection that Felder and Joe Walsh had on stage? That just doesn't exist anymore. What a shame. We also miss Randy and Bernie!
@gordlightfootfan the reason it doesnt feel the same is cause u r old and grew up with felder playing...ask someone who got into the eagles after he left...and they will say it doesnt seem the same watching old clips of the eagles without smith...everyones ear is different and steuart plays note perfect,...if there were no video to the songs u would have trouble telling me the difference.
@mrbarleymob Imagine Don Henley not finding Stu so quickly in Felder's absence? I believe it would be harder to convince fans things were alright, even with Felder in the reunion, with more money at stake, things were still very hostile behind the scenes
@gordlightfootfan Everyone hired in the band now, "they know their place", don't rock that boat, as Felder recounts. However, they still joke around onstage, but I heard Frey REALLY kept some old material alive, like joking about Take it To the Limit as the Credit Card song for his Ex-wife/s
carvinrocks2, yes it is just his opinion of how things happened back in the 70's but it sure seemed like working with Henley and Frey was very difficult and that they monopolized the band. I still think they are a better band with Don Felder than without him.
Don Felder rules! He wrote the music for Hotel California. Need I say more? His book; HEAVEN AND HELL is a real interesting read. Any Eagles fans out there who have read it? If so, what are your thoughts?
@gordlightfootfan it is a great book. you read about how don and glenn are assholes and that being in the rock'n'roll Business is more complicated than people think it is
@musicfan101ful you mean you can read what a person who has just been fired thinks about his previous employers...yeah of course thats going to be a constructive and unbiased version of events...no bullshit it was a quick return dig by felder aimed at them for firing him and nothing more.
@carvinrocks2 and he didnt write all the music either...it was a small acoustic piece on a forgotten tape...henley made hc the song it is today and if u want to dispute this i will upload the interview felder gave before he was fired that describes how it came to be in detail...that will shut a lot of know alls up who dont acctually have a clue about fkal that went on and just read that bitter twisted book.
The Felder book recounts a lot of the Relationship that is rocky, but I can see it being rather factual. Felder isn't some very resentful, angry person, his book is a personal account, and it's not a dish Tell all affair. He says what happened to him personally, as well, good or bad. It happened, he wanted the friendly environment of Early Eagles to persist, and his friends to remain successful and happy
@mrbarleymob Yes, Felder did write the music. In the book, after they finished the recording, Henley said it wasn't quite the same. So Felder called his wife and they recorded it over the phone It was complete with the intro and the dueling guitars. Each guitarist "working out" his section is only to be expected. Felder wrote a good song with classic guitar riffs and concepts. Henley wrote great lyrics and sang it. The "proof" is that Henley made him get the original and redo it.
@carvinrocks2 You forget that Don Henley and Felder got along better then Frey, but they were The Godz based on their solo career success, which speaks to the public preferring Frey and Henley solo as well as in the band, in a way. Henley took courses in literature and was versed in song writing, which did not come naturally, Felder said he could sing the phone book and make it work too! That's true as well
@gordlightfootfan I read it and I am very angry with Henley and Frye for their treatment of Don. They are my favorite band but in no way are they as good without Felder. Saw them last weekend in Chicago. Very good,,, just not the same. BRING BACK DON FELDER!!
@gordlightfootfan Hotel California has the same chord progression as Jethro Tull's We Used To Know. The Eagles toured with Tull before HC was written. Likely a little borrowing/inspiration for HC came from Tull's music. Doesn't diminish the greatness of HC, but again serves to show that all music is simply a reworking/rearrangement of established music theory. Arguing about who's better because of what they wrote is a no win scenario. It's all been done before.
@itsonlyrcknroll Someone did Jimi Hendrix before? Someone did Bob Dylan...going electric before? There is an origin at some point, but influence has to exist as well, tru dat! haha
@MetallicBill Point taken...Hendrix was definitely special, and influenced everyone after him,but Dylan? amazing poet and lyricist, yes...love his music, yes... but stringing together a few G-D-C chords while hanging out at country corner on the fretboard is hardly original, and was likely done a million times by more than one cowboy on the plains, whether he was plugged in or not. Truth is it doesn't matter who did it first, or who influenced who... if it makes you happy, it can't be that bad..
@gordlightfootfan It honestly made me cry, when he talked of losing his pet dog, and the phone call that he was out of the Eagles, it hits home, if you ever lost a job, he was in deep depression over that, it's longer then I had my job, but you wonder how to continue without the friends, the stage, the band....the pay, of course, the money is at the Root of all Evil, as they say, but he wanted to make sure his family would be taken care of down the road
Hope he does it live when I get the chance to see him, I think I'll or MAY sing along with this, to demo my skills on the singing ...this is one of those songs that you almost can't help singing to

It's just his view of what went on, whether it's true or not, who knows, but I know their was lots of conflicts!
He wrote the music but didn't write the words. The words are what makes the song, the song!
