You know its hard to believe that this movie was considered to be a flop at the box office and got terrible reviews.Critics even said that Olivia sounded like a chipmonk!I personally Loved it!!!
The movie was so goofy, you couldn't take your eyes off of it, even if you wanted to. It's also fun to look at all that very early 80's stuff. BTW, the play was pretty funny.
Criticise all you people want to, but this film is a cult classic; not a masterpiece, mind you, but a huge subcultural movement was spurned about 10 years after it was released into theaters.
It's a time capsule back to the hyperactive zaniness of the 1970's and the disco itself.
AAAAAND, you people seem to take for granted that if we didn't have Xanadu, Madonna's "Confessions on a Dance Floor" album might not've ever been, either. Don't believe me? Watch the video for "Sorry" and "Hung Up."
Man, so many clunker musicals back then. Sgt. Peppers, Xanadu; Hollywood had just forgotten how to make them. Wasn't till the 21st century that we got back on track. Jeff Lynne at the top of his game and Olivia at her most beautiful.
Just purchased this movie on region 2 PAL DVD;the pic quality is slightly disappointing because it looks to have been merely copied from an NTSC master resulting in standards conversion judder and flicker on movement. Contacted Universal Pictures UK and can't get a decent response from them;it doesn't seem like they seem to care about people buying it's products,2.0 dolby digital surround sound on the disc is OK though.
NOT the greatest movie BUT some of the finest music by Olivia! Tho ONLY thing that COULD have saved this movie was to have just linked all the musical numbers together for one huge music video! And after seeing some scenes from the Broadway show - makes me appreciate this movie all the more!
okay, ill say it just one more time and no more....if Maxim mag was out in '80, Olivia would have been on ALL TWELVE COVERS! of course mainly because of that very final scene where she turned into that white princess at the end!
Oh, Olivia! Simply the greatest. I read she had fallen on the set and broke her hip or tail bone and after a night in the hospital came back in pain and did this dance. A real trooper.
As for movie careers go, yes it did tampered the careers of Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly, and ELO, but Olivia Newton-John had a huge album that was a major hit called Physical. ELO created the greatest and most underrated album ever called Time. So as fars as careers go, they were doing fine after this movie. Even Gene Kelly hosted two segments both from 1985 & 1994 called "That's Dancing" & "That's Entertainment III"..So they all do well on their own.
Ok so it isn't 'Citizen Kane'...but try and not tap your feet to this music..the soundtrack alone is infectious..it is campy fun from the beginning..no wonder they made a Broadway musical from it..a true GUILTY pleasure..
The musical numbers are cool. Pity the movie itself is utterly horrible and hollow. It's supposed to be a love story, but near the end when they declare they have fallen in love you're like, uh, when??? It's a love story where no one actually falls in love, they just declare that they have at the end. WTF??
Uhh... it was rather obvious that they were in love during the cartoon fantasy ("Don't Walk Away"). Maybe you neglected to watch that part. Or maybe you don't understand English well enough to understand the lyrics to "Suddenly" or "Magic" or any of the other songs in the middle of the movie?
the broadway show is waaaayyy better really u guys should see it so sososo funny ..[imnot tryingto say this movie is bad] imsaying its a very good movie just the broadway show ish bettter .....sooorrry if i offended any1 just saying the broadway show is 5000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times better anddddddd the guy who plays the guy lol..is way hotter on broadway lol im such a suckerup goooddddddd
Second time I've ever seen this movie was last night in my local movie theatre here in Atlanta. Nice to see it on the big screen. First time I saw it I was a child.
Xanadu- Wasn't that the palace that Kublai Khan was supposed to live in, you know ...with the pleasure dome and all that? I know for sure that in the film Citizen Kane, Charles Foster Kane named his San Simeon-like mansion Xanadu. How appropriate!
My favourite detail, by far, is the hitchhikers standing up on the bars, trying to thumb a ride... what did they think would happen? Did they realistically think a altruistic rollerskater would stop, pull off the track, and carry them on their back? Seriously, they should have just climbed down and walked.
This movie is just fun...I mean, it was a remake of 'One Touch of Venus' with Ava Gardner in 1948..but what makes it stand out is the music by ELO, The Tubes, and of course Olivia..no wonder they made a musical out of it..it is too much fun not to enjoy..
"Xanadu" has similarities to "One Touch of Venus" and could also be considered a loose remake of the 1947 picture "Down to Earth," in which Rita Hayworth plays the Greek muse Terpsichore who comes to earth so she can star in a Broadway play -- as herself!
This is a weird movie for me, one one hand, I absolutely dislike the movie plot as a whole....but the music parts (like this vid) are incredibly fun and cool! Plus I have always had a huge crush on Olivia! Incredible beauty and talent!
The movie Xanadu, was not bad was ok, it had great songs in it and I personally liked the mix of 80's music with the 40's music. Love both styles of music.
OMG im turning into my parents. In the '80s my mom played this movie to death. I thought I couldnt wait to get away from it. Now at 35 I just bought this movie. I guess i missed it....LOL @ me.
Xanadu was a fantastic and stylish movie with good aural performances from ONJ and ELO and brilliant sequences and visuals especially the animated Don't Walk Away and this at the end!!! Rubbish my arse!!!
I enjoy this goofy story so much that I've created a Dungeons and Dragons adventure for my players that will have Terpsichore in disguise as a young maiden who for the moment I'm still calling "Kira." I don't think the current players would recognize "Kira" from either Xanadu or the original movie Down to Earth, featuring Rita Hayworth as Terpsichore/Kitty Pendleton. Maybe I'll call her "Kitty" to make the reference even more obscure, or use the Greek for cat, "gatos," feminized as "Gata." :-D
I can't help but wonder - if like most roller-rinks or dance floors - if even in the Perfect World of Xanadu - there's a f*ked up section of the flooring that ya gotta watch out for..
Ah one of the guilty pleasures of the 80's LOL! This movie was so bad it was good but the soundtrack kicked ass. Olivia looked even better here than in Grease. Such a heavenly voice and a fantastic lady.
No other movie quite encapsulates the point at which the 70's became the 80's as the movie Xanadu. I find it fascinating to see the 70's influences merging with the trends that carried over into the 80's.
The head side angle move the dancers were doing was really the start of the 80s trend right there. Not to mention the little shimmy with the shoulder from the ladies. Totally the start of 80s dance routines, right next to Pat Benatar's Love Is A Battlefield dance scene.
I mean first the Xanadu thing.. then tap dance, then some sort of... er.. "heavy" rock.. then country.. then a Xanadu reprise.. Seriously, what was the DJ smoking??...
Thumbs up! This was magical to me as a child and still is...I wanted to be Olivia after Grease and this movie was an aspiration to all young girls out there with a pair of roller skates and an imagination.
Last night I couln´t asleep so I watched XANADU video again(well, how many times have I done it?).I enjoyed that.Sweet 80´s.I´m really glad that I could live in that period.
When Olivia comes out at 6:50 with that seventies spacelady outfit and that crazy makeup and she's strutting along with that 1000 gigawatt smile... damn, she's fine! I don't know what it is, but I found that bit more sexually arousing than even Princess Leia in a metal bikini.
You know its hard to believe that this movie was considered to be a flop at the box office and got terrible reviews.Critics even said that Olivia sounded like a chipmonk!I personally Loved it!!!

Olivia is hot. Sings great. ELO is a good back. Overall the song is catchy. The video blows but you can't have everything right?

Ah one of the guilty pleasures of the 80's LOL! This movie was so bad it was good but the soundtrack kicked ass. Olivia looked even better here than in Grease. Such a heavenly voice and a fantastic lady.

I love it!!

Oh Lordy...
I mean first the Xanadu thing.. then tap dance, then some sort of... er.. "heavy" rock.. then country.. then a Xanadu reprise.. Seriously, what was the DJ smoking??...
I'll never call Marilyn Manson a freak again...

Thumbs up! This was magical to me as a child and still is...I wanted to be Olivia after Grease and this movie was an aspiration to all young girls out there with a pair of roller skates and an imagination.

a very powerful movie ...
singlehandedly, it had the power to end the careers of Gene Kelly, Olivia Newton-John and put the final nail in the coffin of the disco era
now THAT'S power!!

Terrible movie, but Olivia was HOT beyond HOT and the soundtrack absolutely rocked.
