I thought permaculture was all about sustainability. So why are they whining about lack of government subsidies? If you need government subsidies then it's not sustainable.
@Avillageidiot59 The sustainability refers directly to the environmental sustainability. In terms of commercial viability of this type of sustainable agriculture, any produce they take to market will be competing with large scale farmed goods (like beef) which is HIGHLY subsidized by the government. Without the government subsidies, they have to sell the produce at a higher cost than the large scale farmed food, even though it is produced more economically.
There are no native cultures that are vegetarian, since it is only possible with intensive agriculture of grains or roots. Human teeth are both carnivore and herbivore types. Human GI tract is longer than carnivore's but shorter than herbivores. Don't eat animals --- but don't try to justify it by history or biology. Intensive agriculture is very damaging to nature, worse than grazing. The only benefit is a large human population. Read "The Vegetarian Myth" to understand.

I like everything I'm seeing. However, there is one important element missing: not butchering the animals. Eating meat is an activity that nature has reserved for carnivores. Humans, although categorized by scientists as omnivores, are not designed by nature to eat meat. Also, most religions/ancient sources od wisdom prohibit meat eating. "Beast this, beast that." It's an animal. It sleeps, it eats, it takes care of its offspring, etc. It's life has value beyond meat for your mouth/stomach.
Umm, if humans aren't omnivores, then, tell me, what they eat in the winter?? Do you think that previous humans ate only plants in the cold and snowy winters??? They would kill an animal and eat it. Some would thank the animal for giving itself so that they may have nourishment. That is where praying before meals originated. I do agree that humans need to cut back on meat consumption and add more plants to their diet.
In times of famine or clear need, the eating of meat becomes an obvious alternative to eating plant foods. I used to eat meat and think nothing of it.. but now that I have stopped, I'd never go back. And you're right, we're all eating way too much meat as a society - that's why our society has become godless like the Soviet Union circa 1900's. And that's why America triumphed over Russia - we still believed or at least considered God in our collective consciousness.
@maofive uummmm, our closest relatives, gorillas, are vegetarian. they are something like 99% identical to us genetically, don't eat animal carcasses, and are 500 + lbs. of muscle.
@711shamonkey Ahhh, yes, and so do pigs and chimps. That is not a good argument. You see, we were designed to eat according to climate and seasons. In the colder climates, you do not have vegetation to eat, so naturally they turn to meat and, if they are lucky, fish. Some cultures that have their main staple as meat, ie inuits. If someone chooses to go vegan, that is fine and dandy, but pushing those beliefs on others who enjoy eating the muscles of animals is not going to go any where.
@711shamonkey I have done the vegetarian thing before and I didn't like it. I like my meat. I do eat smaller portions of it, but it is sooo delicious. Venison, beef, chicken, pork, duck, pheasant, and many types of fish are very tasty and good for you. Oh, and I LOVE eggs, they go great with cheese and ham or bacon. Humans need to realize that it isn't wrong to eat meat, just like it isn't wrong to be vegan/vegetarian. Each person has their own views. We must learn to coexist. WDIK?
