this pisses me off so bad.. her friend was begging for some drugs and was suffering.. they are being so unfair to polly.. well shes dead.. and she gave this shot her one last chance to her own self.. i get what they are getting at doing their jobs.. but they're acting like shes so horrible and she wasnt.. AT ALL..
They're fully grown women how do they have control over them getting tatoos? and that was really bad that they ratted on them for getting tatoos...if you ask me shelly is the bad seed she causes the most trouble
My heart just broke hearing Polly's mother BEGGING for her to stay BEGGING I could hear in her voice she knows this what her daughter needs and that she NEEDS this help as a mother myself we know what our children need and to hear that Polly died and then hearing this her mom on the phone BEGGING for her daughter to have help sent chills that I felt deep in y soul.
@ccaarriissaa Polly needs to take responsabiity and accountablity for her actions. Her mother begging and crying is a great example as one reason Polly had an ED. Her mom seems like a classic enabler
Polly is not a bad person she is bit different then others she is lovely and very beautiful lady. In another comment section i have red that all the ppl working in that facility are obese and being horrible to everyone, WAKE UP ppl this is their job they have to be like that that is treatment facility for anorexic, bulimic ppl. they should give her a one more chance it seesm that she has learned her lesson.
Some of the staff members are seriously FAT. Themselves too should re-think their own eating.
And the woman who talked about "bad seed"... she's so bad at her work. No professional therapist says things like she does, neither talks to patients the way she does....
is it really that big of a deal that you are prohibited from getting tattoos or piercings while in recovery..?@~@ Didnt think thy were that big of a deal that its an insult to your very being that you cant get one for a few months. :/
I would never wish to go to this place. They treat the patients like they're criminals or children or BOTH. Just because they're suffering eating disorders doesn't mean that they aren't adults. If they want a tattoo or piercing, they should be allowed it.
The no tattoo or piercing this is bullshit. Its bad enough that they can't control what they eat, how the work out or even sleep and now they take away something that is meant as an outlet for creativity and passion....its sick. I would never sign that.
but u know what polly wasnt helping herself in treatment either...she edid everything that she wasnt suppose to ..it was like she didnt wanna be there
Polly really didn't do anything they shouldn't have expected. Okay, so yeah, giving Shelley the medication was wrong, but she was trying to help a friend.
Breaking a few small rules? The poor woman had lost all of the control she was used to having, of course she did things like that, losing control is a major trigger for eating disorders, and they shouldn't have punished her so severely for it. They knew she wouldn't get any proper support and would have to recover alone, and that's disgusting.
@skrillexox - Actually, if you watch the video you will hear that she gave another patient a prescription narcotic. I agree it's sad that she was kicked out and what the "team" said about her was shitty (bad seed? Real professional) but it wasn't just the tattoo.
@jennpenn5 exactly! By giving her that controlled substance polly broke the law and the treatment center cannot turn their back on this. What happens if someone takes a medication they are allergic to or takes too many of something they weren't supposed to have to begin with? It's a pattern of this behavior that got her kicked out and she was warned. She cannot be allowed to screw around with everyone's expensive chance at recovery.
it's so fucking sad to know that they kicked her out of there just because she got a tattoo. a tattoo that represents RECOVERY. how sad is that? and she ended up killing herself from what i've heard? if they just gave her the help she needed, maybe she wouldn't have killed herself. it really tears me up inside to know that.
@cigaretteskinny21 Put yourself in the seat of the treatment facility. What are they to do? Next thing you know the newspapers are running stories about how they knew drugs were being passed inside their treatment program and the staff did nothing. They cannot have that. This is criminal activity going on, they are obligated to act as professionals.
okay so all the staff there are either obese/ overweight so won't help to motivate the women to eat... or they are bleached blonde and fake tanned - they don't like their original self either, again not helping people who hate themselves feel better.... I don't get it.
I hate the therapists there. I love Shelly though. I don't like that she told the staff about Polly's tattoo but Shelly's my favorite. I wish I looked like her.
If Polly consistently broke the rules and was a bad influence on the other girls, thes yes, she should have been kicked out. What was the point of her being there if she was going to act like that? It's sad that she eventually killed herself, but the staff were right in making her leave.
You can't help someone if they aren't willing to help themselves. A therapist can only do so much and all these women do is lie to them and try to manipulate them.
@Beaveljeez That's the disease, though. Eating disorders are based on lies, secrets, and manipulation. That has to be worked on just as much as the eating itself.
@ktar007 Yes I know that, but if the women are unwilling to work on the problems that they have, no progress will be made. You can't force someone to work on an issue that they aren't willing to do the work for. They are just like drug addicts. Exact same behaviors.
They should have let Shelley go. She wasnt making progress. Polly should have denied, denied, denied. she was getting better. rip. i cant seem to make progress

@americainapparel Cause certain types of candy (like rock candy, hard candy) which have low calories are used to fill their stomachs and lose weight and taste better than eating mustard and ketchup.
@americainapparel suppressing appetite with hard candies is a symptom of an eating disorder and is part of the control process. literally having any kind of food that they can keep in their rooms makes it harder to give up the control they had over food in the first place
@lesterclaypool1 Why are you so obsessed with Shelley? I've just watched this documentary and you've commented way too much. You don't personally know her from what I've gathered so how about let it go and go troll somewhere else?
this treatment team is a straight mess. someone needs to stop these people they are a group of mindless, heartless hens who obviously need to work out their own issues first. wow.
Im sure they all feel like complete evil shit now that Polly is gone!!!! Its true that Polly did things she wasnt supposed to but they all gangged up on her, snitched on her & put her on the spot. How do u all feel now?????
@JFTunit 3 reasons: 1. condiments (ketchup/mustard) can be used as giving the food you eat extra lubrication for purging (vomiting) 2. some patients may hoard certain foods as a way of control...they may not eat them, but just having them gives that person a sense of control over food. 3. some patients may refuse to eat or not eat enough at meal times and eat condiments when they want in their rooms and feel better about it (again a control thing) imo. i'm not a doctor, just someone with an ed.
Shelly is NOT manipulative. She has anorexia and depression and until you have either or both of those disorders, you will never know what it's like. From the way I see it, she WANTED to recover, but she wasn't exactly sure how. Therefore she's trying to listen to everything the staff was saying, and doing what they wanted, because she trusted them, which was probably the hardest thing she ever had to do. She needed to help HERSELF recover, which was and should have been a priority.
Shelly contacted me today (August 10th, 2011) about how she didn't like the comments that I left on THIN. People with manipulation problems don't like when you tell the truth about them, you see.
To reiterate: Shelly is manipulative by nature and her ED is just another tool for her to use people, like she manipulated doctors to get drugs and like she manipulates her family so that she'll get more attention than her sister.
She also must check out this film every day to see what's being said.
@lesterclaypool1 you SOB Shelly is in now way Manipulative... Grow up and stop talking crap on people... if you were really a therapist who dealt with patients who suffer from ED you would know better than to say that crap so grow up.
@lesterclaypool1 This is a documentary which has been edited from hours of footage. Furthermore, unless you know someone personally you can't say that they're 'manipulative'.
I would advise you to read Shelly's blog. I work in entertainment so I know better than to take an editor's impression of someone to be the truth. Shelly's blog reveals the kind of person that she is.
@lesterclaypool1 So you don't know her and you've never met her? I have read her blog and followed her Twitter page but I have never met her so I couldn't comment on the kind of person she is - I would advise you to do the same.
@lesterclaypool1 I'm not replying anymore but I would remind everyone that this was filmed over weeks and includes hundreds of hours of footage which has been edited down to one person's view of what happened. You cannot possibly know how anyone behaves if you've never met them and you don't know them!
@lesterclaypool1 I've read Shelly's blog, she seems to struggle with major anxiety, but at least she's working on overcoming that like she overcame her ED. Other than watching this movie and reading her blog how do you know her? It's ok if you want to say she's not perfect, cuz no one is, but come on, let's not judge her. Do you want people who don't know you to judge you?
Don't they know that when someone is on psychiatric medication for a long period of time you can't just cut them off cold turkey. You have to be weaned off, when people go off meds like that it can cause a laundry list of problems. I think pulling Shelly off so quickly was a terrible idea.
this just shows how people placed in positions of authority over others, no matter how well intentioned they are, will use "amptsprache" and their authority to rigidly enforce rules at the expense of common sense, and harm those in their care. that psychiatrist knows that the LD50 of that drug is almost certainly high enough that it posed no risk to shelly, but she ignored that, just to make a point and win an argument. any relationship based on dishonesty like that is not going to work.
i feel like telling the people about the tattoo was taking it too far. It was a massive overreaction. The tattoo was FOR recovery, i can't believe they kicked her out.
To call any of them a "bad seed" is just horrible...polly died in the end...how much could they have wanted to help her...that is why i don't trust therapists.
@taylormadediva2009 these facilities only care about the MONEY. They dont care if they get better, they just want thier checks. These hospitals aint cheep, a small one is $1000 a day, so this one has to be more
@vadasabbatelli believe me, I know how much a place like that is...i've been in the "hospital" system for a while (not recently but 2006 was the last time)...i just think that the healthcare system has SO MANY FLAWS...people are dying everyday because of good ol' american greed!
Part of me see's why they would want her out of the center but another part me is thinking that they could have lowered polly to another level, or transfer her to a different renfrew center rather then the one there. Totally kicking her out seemed like poor judgement on there part. They had many options available to her but yet they chose the one that could do the most judgement.
Judging by the way Shelly reacted when her therapist asked her if she carried things around with her that were unspeakable, I have the feeling she was raped or abused in some way. And that just breaks my heart. :(
been bulimic for about 5 years when I binge at times I cant even taste the food depending on what Im eating then the purge makes me soooo good its like smoking some good weed or drinking your fave drink 10 x over @ times I may not eat for 3 days knowing if I pur ge the 4th day purging will be easier but bulimia is more about emotional issues than food it self Ive dealing with low self esteem, rape as a 9 y/o, my dad's death he passed away 10 yrs plus, my mom being ill, bulimia is powerful
@ClythiaMysticka Bodies handle things differently. I've had bulimia on and off for 15 years (I'm 26 now) and have had moments of "health" There are some people who can die within months from the electrolyte imbalances causing heart failure. It's sad what we go through but I think a lot of people on some basis understand not being able to handle emotions well that we end up damaging ourselves to cope (alcoholism, eating disorders or over eating, gambling, shopping compulsions are few mechanisms)
@ClythiaMysticka cont. that people do. We aren't alone. I don't know if she accidently overdosed or did it intentionally. The only thing I understand is being in that much pain. I hope that wherever she is, she's happy and at peace. I think she helped a lot of people without realizing it
It breaks my heart listening to her mother beg and plead for them to give Polly another chance, she knew what would happen if they kicked her out.. These so called 'professionals' are responsible for her death I don't know how they sleep at night.
@SevenDeadliSins I absolutely agree with you. I really just cannot believe they would say something like that. Just...wow. What patience and encouragement, huh.
How can those professionals who are there to help and protect just listen to that poor mother beg, and not do anything. I know I don't know enough of the story and I understand that Polly has messed up, but they just seem so freakin heartless.
The girls in this program act like children and need to be treated as such. They are nice girls but the dsease has changed them into spoiled, sneaky brats. Their brains aren't working properly, they're so malnourished. Kudos to the staff for being as patient as they are with them. Those girls are lucky to be there, it's their choice how they're treated and how the stay goes.
I agree with the tattoo thing, but what made my mouth drop was the part when they said "Bad seed". Really? In a recovery place they are going to spew that word around? Disgusting human beings there, I don't care if they are "helping" people or not.
i would be interested to know, as someone currently dealing with anorexia, what percent of viewers have been through an eating disorder or are currently battling.
@ariisapotato i struggle with body image... but i believe that society today where all the girls on t.v. that are "pretty" are viewed as the "ideal" and girls start to notice that @ an impressionable age. I am not struggling with an eating disorder, I still want to understand how it gets so serious. We should all just live above our egos and enjoy our time on earth. A part of the circle of life, is to gather energy from food as a human being. but it shouldnt be weird like the docs make it seem..
@TheKathrynVine It's not the friendship as much as the things they do together. The smoking in polly's bathroom, the bickering over calories and fat, this is the stuff they're trying to discourage.
I do not understand these women. I know that they are recovering but they seem to have absolutely no respect for ANY of the rules. I could see them breaking rules dealing with food, but cigarettes? Really? I know that some of the rules seem unnecessary, but they have been implemented for a reason. I do think that the staff is rather judgmental and very unfit to be working in that environment. If they wanted to dismiss Polly they should have placed her in a facility more suited to her.
i myself have been in treatment for my ed,and this place is ridiclous!! I and other patients smoked ALOT in our bathrooms and never got caught-and when someone else did-they never threw that person out-but gave them a warning!!(I'm from Kansas City,MO. by the way)! I would NEVER go to Renfrew-shame on that stupid-assed staff-Polly(RIP) got the short end of the stick-shame on that staff!! also,i don't think it's wise to have VERY obese staff working at ANY edt center!!!
Comparing an eating disorder to cancer is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard, and for the record Anorexia and Bulimia aren't diseases, they're compulsive habits.
People blaming the staff for Polly being kicked out need to realize that she signed a form stating that if she broke the rules she would be kicked out, why would the staff risk other patients relapsing for a single person.
I guess nobody wants to take responsibility for their own actions.
Why the hell are the tattoos such a big deal?? Recovery tattoos seem like an incredibly positive thing to me, that show a commitment to getting well...
@glic6616 Because people with eating disorders are very secretive and sneaky about their lifestyle that they become accustom to hiding more things, treatment is trying to break the cycle of being sneaky, secretive, holding things in and lying because those are all negative aspects and feed into their eating disorder.
The lady at 9:37 looked like she was choking back tears, I feel it was out of their hands because giving drugs to another patient, I think legally she could've been seriously fined or put in jail if the clinic felt the need to press charges against her. :c this is so sad though!
@glic6616 it could be that when people are that malnutritioned the body may not heal the same as healthy ones.. a tat is an open wound and immune systems could be low, maybe other health issues could arise from doing something like that.
@glic6616 because they can also be seen as a trophy - 'look, I'm ill, I have an eating disorder'. they don't want it to get competitive, or for these girls to always have that shadow over them.
Have those who blame the staff for all the poor choices Polly made (that got her thrown out of the treatment center) ever thought of the thousands of girls who desperately want help. These girls would give anything to be in the position Polly was in. She had a terrible disease, but it wasn't the reason she broke so many rules. She broke them because she was a trouble maker. Its very sad she passed away but the staff is no more responsible for that than anyone else who tried to help her.
I felt really bad for the nurse at 9:35! I could tell she was holding back tears, feeling so helpless and knowing its policy to send Polly packing but wanting her to stay to get the help she needs. :c
@GreenOrangeBlack ya for sure, when I was in treatment at first we weren't allowed to exercise but as we gained weight we were allowed to exercise and they monitored it but gave us healthy amount of exercise by the time we left.
god these therapists.. did they get there degree at ebay ?

why cnt they have condiments..???
JFTunit 6 months ago
@JFTunit 3 reasons: 1. condiments (ketchup/mustard) can be used as giving the food you eat extra lubrication for purging (vomiting) 2. some patients may hoard certain foods as a way of control...they may not eat them, but just having them gives that person a sense of control over food. 3. some patients may refuse to eat or not eat enough at meal times and eat condiments when they want in their rooms and feel better about it (again a control thing) imo. i'm not a doctor, just someone with an ed.

These staff piss me off so much, it is clearly Shelley being the fucking twat. Poor Polly, bless her soul and may she rest in piece.
ISGBV 6 months ago
Shelly is NOT manipulative. She has anorexia and depression and until you have either or both of those disorders, you will never know what it's like. From the way I see it, she WANTED to recover, but she wasn't exactly sure how. Therefore she's trying to listen to everything the staff was saying, and doing what they wanted, because she trusted them, which was probably the hardest thing she ever had to do. She needed to help HERSELF recover, which was and should have been a priority.
yayitschristine92 6 months ago 2
Shelly contacted me today (August 10th, 2011) about how she didn't like the comments that I left on THIN. People with manipulation problems don't like when you tell the truth about them, you see.
To reiterate: Shelly is manipulative by nature and her ED is just another tool for her to use people, like she manipulated doctors to get drugs and like she manipulates her family so that she'll get more attention than her sister.
She also must check out this film every day to see what's being said.
lesterclaypool1 6 months ago
@lesterclaypool1 you SOB Shelly is in now way Manipulative... Grow up and stop talking crap on people... if you were really a therapist who dealt with patients who suffer from ED you would know better than to say that crap so grow up.
loved2bethin 6 months ago
@lesterclaypool1 This is a documentary which has been edited from hours of footage. Furthermore, unless you know someone personally you can't say that they're 'manipulative'.
sophizzy 6 months ago 2
@sophizzy
I would advise you to read Shelly's blog. I work in entertainment so I know better than to take an editor's impression of someone to be the truth. Shelly's blog reveals the kind of person that she is.
lesterclaypool1 6 months ago
@lesterclaypool1 So you don't know her and you've never met her? I have read her blog and followed her Twitter page but I have never met her so I couldn't comment on the kind of person she is - I would advise you to do the same.
sophizzy 6 months ago
@sophizzy
I'm not commenting on the person, I'm commentng on a behavior...something that you don't have to know the person to identify.
lesterclaypool1 6 months ago
@lesterclaypool1 I'm not replying anymore but I would remind everyone that this was filmed over weeks and includes hundreds of hours of footage which has been edited down to one person's view of what happened. You cannot possibly know how anyone behaves if you've never met them and you don't know them!
sophizzy 6 months ago 2

ShhhhhItsasecret 7 months ago 3
this just shows how people placed in positions of authority over others, no matter how well intentioned they are, will use "amptsprache" and their authority to rigidly enforce rules at the expense of common sense, and harm those in their care. that psychiatrist knows that the LD50 of that drug is almost certainly high enough that it posed no risk to shelly, but she ignored that, just to make a point and win an argument. any relationship based on dishonesty like that is not going to work.

@MeganRR333 Aww :( i over dosed twice, and im still alive, i have had bulimia for 3 years. is there a reason im still alive?
ClythiaMysticka 5 months ago
@ClythiaMysticka Bodies handle things differently. I've had bulimia on and off for 15 years (I'm 26 now) and have had moments of "health" There are some people who can die within months from the electrolyte imbalances causing heart failure. It's sad what we go through but I think a lot of people on some basis understand not being able to handle emotions well that we end up damaging ourselves to cope (alcoholism, eating disorders or over eating, gambling, shopping compulsions are few mechanisms)
MeganRR333 5 months ago
@ClythiaMysticka cont. that people do. We aren't alone. I don't know if she accidently overdosed or did it intentionally. The only thing I understand is being in that much pain. I hope that wherever she is, she's happy and at peace. I think she helped a lot of people without realizing it

Silverbb100 8 months ago
I agree with the tattoo thing, but what made my mouth drop was the part when they said "Bad seed". Really? In a recovery place they are going to spew that word around? Disgusting human beings there, I don't care if they are "helping" people or not.

i would be interested to know, as someone currently dealing with anorexia, what percent of viewers have been through an eating disorder or are currently battling.
ariisapotato 8 months ago

I guess nobody wants to take responsibility for their own actions.

glic6616 10 months ago 127
@glic6616 the problem is that it was a defiant. She knew it was against the rules and did it anyway
muffinfaceee 9 months ago
@glic6616 Because people with eating disorders are very secretive and sneaky about their lifestyle that they become accustom to hiding more things, treatment is trying to break the cycle of being sneaky, secretive, holding things in and lying because those are all negative aspects and feed into their eating disorder.
girl123interrupted 7 months ago
The lady at 9:37 looked like she was choking back tears, I feel it was out of their hands because giving drugs to another patient, I think legally she could've been seriously fined or put in jail if the clinic felt the need to press charges against her. :c this is so sad though!
girl123interrupted 7 months ago
@glic6616 it could be that when people are that malnutritioned the body may not heal the same as healthy ones.. a tat is an open wound and immune systems could be low, maybe other health issues could arise from doing something like that.
shonhubble 7 months ago
@glic6616 because they can also be seen as a trophy - 'look, I'm ill, I have an eating disorder'. they don't want it to get competitive, or for these girls to always have that shadow over them.

@glic6616 ...She was also smoking, sweetie. that contributed to it.
ClythiaMysticka 5 months ago
Have those who blame the staff for all the poor choices Polly made (that got her thrown out of the treatment center) ever thought of the thousands of girls who desperately want help. These girls would give anything to be in the position Polly was in. She had a terrible disease, but it wasn't the reason she broke so many rules. She broke them because she was a trouble maker. Its very sad she passed away but the staff is no more responsible for that than anyone else who tried to help her.

Oh boy... Kicking Polly out will certainly help her Eating Disorder...(!)
That clinic is so corrupt, they forgot that they should be helping people, instead of kicking them out for getting a tattoo or not being able to pay.
Also, they are not teaching the sufferers to exercise with eating, exercise is crucial to build muscle and aid the circulatory system.
