It's amazing. I heard someone say that when they came back from doing it they were never the same again. We watch Michael Jackson wandering around harrods spending hundreds of thousands on tat, yet somehow this offends people. It says so much more to burn it than to bask in it. Fuck Fabio Dogeggs and his hair.
The best argument made is simply... if they had spent the money on material items it would be exactly the same waste. Our culture is repulsed by this waste but not by the other.
APARENTLY - they wrote down all the serial numbers so they could claim all the money back. not sure if this is true, just what a tutor at college said
"I used to talk to my Dad like that when I was 16." ... what's that git's problem?
"I don't try to get to the truth of things with my Da no more, my talking back upsets his authoritative ego, I just say, yes Da." His comes from a long line of gits, that's his problem. The git.
Personally I think they were silly to burn £1 million, but I have to say the question about medical treatment for others could just as be easily asked to someone who spent the money on a rolls royce, or a painting. How many spend £40 on x box games which won't even be worth 50p in 10 years times, while people die of hunger every second of the day. Again, I think they were silly, but they are certainly not the evil people some are trying to make them out to be!
@clonmultcity the full interview is on klfcommunicationsnet's youtube channel. i ripped it from there and edited it down to a 10 minute version. been looking for a better quality version, but nowhere to be found
By burning it they actually added value to the rest of the fiat currency in circulation. You should thank them!
Of course, in recent years, all the good that achieved has totally been wiped out by the Billions / Trillions of pounds worth of "Quantitative Easing" that our Governments have engaged in. The audience and other guests clearly do not understand the nature of what "money" really is.
@chrismortloch92 they earned it, it is theirs to do how they choose.
Why don't you take a majority of your money and give it to charity?
That's the problem with the world...always looking for a handout. How about having the rest of the world get off their collective asses & try to do something for themselves instead of excepting a savior to bail them out?
@abstrus Yes they did burn real money. but not 1,000,000 about 100,000 went up the chimney apparently making a fair few quid for the residents of Jura in the morning!
that was just an immature stunt...what really happend is those two dudes gathered the ashes of the money and reclaimed it from the Bank of England...so in reality thay lost nothing - how lame!
yes indiemayy, i'm curious as well. especially considering that they withdrew their back catalogue from sale at this time as well i.e. it's now impossible to buy their music from a retailer.
@ironmantetsuo those apperances weren't free, and I'm sure there was an indirect form of advertising, like "those are the guys who burned a million pounds"
I'm not saying they regained all of $1m but it's no different than advertising.
And just to add: if you look on yahoo news today (28-01-09) you can read about some stoopid Americans who forked out £100,00 to clone their dead pet - and the daft "rocker" and the woman in the audience in this chat show think what KLF did was stoopid? Get a perspective, get a life!
As far as I remember they got offered £7K from a London art gallery for a suitcase full of the ashes of a million quid. I loved this gesture. True courage, true artists.
how comes alot of people feel the need to sound intelligent about all this? don't it ever occur to you that maybe they just wanted to burn a million quid, maybe they were just saying 'we hate economy' or somethin like that, not all these fucked up theories that everyone else is coming out with
If we had a different system that didn't involve people hoarding money, a system in which a tiny minority rule the world by controlling money, then we'd have a better world with less suffering.
No I don't mean the jews I mean a generalisation of rich corporations and families who have had wealth for 100's of years, that have all the money we all are supposed to aspire to have.
Sweet FSM, the host is stupid. Currency is merely a commodity, no more or less magical then any other. Destroying that currency merely slightly increases the value of the currency all other people hold. In a real sense, this gave a small sum everyone equally.
Unless you think that a mint burning surplus notes is equally immoral, of course...in which case you may already have lost.
Yeah, that was exactly my thought as I watched this, and I wondered why the show didn't get a comment from an economist. Nobody seemed to consider the actual economical effects of this. Money isn't value, it just represents value. They briefly touched on that point (not burning bread), but they didn't go anywhere with it. If they'd just said "This causes deflation, and everyone else's money is now more worth", then I think the dumb audience would have been much more ready to accept the action.
In America the government will replace money if it's been damaged. Really. If more that 50% of a bill remains the treasury will provide you a fresh bill. The British government should have stepped in and said -- funny boys, now we're replacing your damaged money and giving it to some sick children. That's the only way to turn this situation around.
Why did they go on TV to explain themselves? It should be left to those viewing the film to interpret and analyse. They shouldn't have expected much sympathy from a mainstream chat show!
