  • If the splitting is to make firewood, then the straightness of the split may not matter. It is definitely easier to split wood starting from the outside. Because we are laying out relatively precise squares that should follow the grain straight down, it helps to have equal amounts of wood on both sides so the split doesn't want to drift to a side with less resistance.

    Someone asked if you start at the middle. Here (mountains in northern Taiwan) people splitting wood with an ax never start at the middle, always work in from the sides. I wonder if it's because the tools are different, the woods that grow here are different, or just custom? ~ anyway, thanks for posting.
