  • its called cocaine it dries your throat out haha plus hes been singing in the whole show hes trying to hard to be breathy

  • that drummer is so gay

  • i fall in love with his music literally every time i hear it..

  • He looks like his having an orgasm, when he really feels the song. It is so incredibly sexy, in such a odd way. Orh.

  • Comment removed

  • Does anyone know how the guy in the back makes those sounds on his guitar? It sounds like some sort of pick scrape...

  • he's really good but actually I think this is one of his bad performances, seems likes he can't breathe or something

  • Thumbs up if you believe John Mayer is one of the greatest musicians of all time!

  • can someone please explain why his vocals suck so much on this song?

  • what's the name of the intro's song????

  • @RoxXSshinE never mind-never mind.. :D part of the intro..

  • Is that a bluesy / baby acoustic guitar he's playing, or is he just that huge compared to a dreadnought?

  • @fabpopa It's my impression that he is playing an om-21, which is a martin fingerstyle guitar. So yes it is definitely smaller, but the guy is also 6'3. I own the same guitar and it looks identical to me, so i'm guessing that is what he used to play.

  • @ams914 makes sense. and that seems like an amazing instrument.

  • @fabpopa it's definitely great, but his playing makes it legendary.

  • i have yet to recognize a single english word in this song.

  • John mayer is such a talented musician. He is honestly one of the best musicians of this generation. Yes his singles may be intended to appeal to a more simple minded group of music listeners. However a true musician can listen to his album and hear is musical genius. Its insane.

  • @diamondme425 dude it was like you took those words directly from my mouth ....i tell people that all the time lol thats crazy!!!!!

  • definitely gonna cover this song! :)

  • 5:49 , eyebrow raise :) but for who...?

  • @missygirl9192 haha thats great!

  • Haha, his faces are priceless (:

  • Does snybody know how the other guitarist makes those sound effects in the background during the intro and throughout most of the song? I can't rlly seem to get the same sound that he does...

  • Noice pearl reference drum kit ;D

  • I think his voice is cozy in this video, but sure... it's even better now.

  • I reckon his voice has gotten worse from this point onwards, 'cause he now smokes dope.

  • @Bassmate stop whinging

  • @benjinorto0 No.

  • Hey, maybe he had a cold....cause his voice is different in this clip. It's like either he's deliberately trying to be raspy or he's just sick.

  • @godswordsheal this is similar to how he sounds when he plays it on the re-release of Room for Squares. If you listen to that whole album, this is the only song where he sounds like this, because this track was recorded later and only in the re-release.

I love this raspy sound. When I cover Mayer stuff I emulate this kind of tone.

  • @Caldur06 theres a live version on melborune 2007

  • I think his voice is far better now than it used to be. It's cleaner, he can hold notes longer and more in tune. His range is better and more controlled nowadays, and it seems like his ability to improvise on vocal melodies and harmonies is just light years ahead of his old stuff. It would be nice to hear a recent version of this song when he's not out of breath.

  • true, but there's a charm to how he used to sing. that's part of what made room for squares such a special album

  • yes his voice is better... this was recorded in like 02-03?, so he's had alotta practice

  • I strongly agree. You can hear a snippet of him doing this song recently In Wale-Letter.

  • @jacosmith86 i definitely think he sounds better now but when he made this album and also on the heavier things album i think his voice was more unique

  • @jacosmith86 i'd say hes just a lot more confident now. back then he was a budding artist, trying to hold on to what MIGHT have been "5 minutes of fame". well he held on to it. now i think he feels more free musically.

  • Damn, the beginning was intense

  • This is honestly my favorite song EVER... but for some reason the live version doesn't have the same affect on me. When it starts on the album version, the arrangement just gives me this great feeling. I still like it live, but it's not the same for me.

  • What kind of picks is he using? Does anyone know?

  • lol i caught 3 picks of his at his gig in glasgow, he uses Dunlops.

  • Great intro, i'm guessing it's exclusive only to this show?

I love John, he's the best isn't he?

  • Yes, he is...

  • i love this raw shit right here, voice and all..everything thats polished and glow isn't always good..sometimes u need a some ruggedness to Feel what the artist is feeling

  • a very clever song, this one. the chords are genius! great song

  • john butler is one of the most talented!!

  • Most talented musician alive today.

  • debatable

  • I miss this John.

  • he's a much better singer than 7 years ago...

  • lets be honest....he has gotten a shitload better at singing since this.

  • Totally true!

  • I agree completely. However, like some people have already said, there's a more rugged quality to his voice here that actually makes his voice sound better- in terms of appeal- than now, because it is too good now, near perfect. And perfect gets boring after a while, won't you agree?

  • I love john mayer and all,

but he pulls some really minga faces.

  • Retarded John at 1:33. lol

  • Each john mayer live performance is better than the studio recording.

    you are my GOD

  • so the electric guitarist is pretty awesome too in the background eh?

  • I just said this in anohter john mayer video but im saying it again: why do people hate his voice in the early period of his career. I think its awesome it complements this song so much, The carefree feel of the music and his breathy vocie is awesome.

  • i second that

  • it is just unbelievable how he improved as a singer.... Just compare where the light is to any given thursday... simply amazing

  • yeah, in where the light is he got more control with his breathing while singing (:

  • That intro blows my mind everytime.

  • This drummer is brutal

  • In a good way or a bad way lol?

  • now i like john mayer and all. but that drummer is definitely not brutal. hes pretty good but if you want brutal try neal peart, mike portnoy, or travis barker. those are some seriously good drummers. this guy is alright.

john, on the otherhand, is incredible. as always

  • By brutal, I meant terrible

  • Oh-well in that case you should give him some credit. No one playing with Mayer is going to be terrible.

  • lmao thats hilarious..hes awesome though.

  • lol i know but it think hes just going with the song :)

  • amazing trippy intro

  • Amazing:)

I just love his voice ...

  • damn. he feels it every time.

  • random question but does anyone know at :35 johns guitarist does this thing with the guitar and i makes it sound like an acordian kinda how do u do that

  • Looks like he's just putting his finger on a fret on one of the strings and running the side of his pick up and down it.

  • Hey. He uses an E-bow. Try to google it, or find some of the instruction videos here on YouTube..

  • there is no e bow.. sorry

  • its not johns guitar. Its the other guys. I think he's using an E-bow that make the strings to vibrate all the time. The he "scratches" it to make the trainsound.

  • 100% correct.

  • awesome song

  • honestly, one of the best songs ever!

  • 1:33 haha

  • Hilarious face =P

  • Haha, yeah I guess! But it's a part of his charm don't you think? It's simply not John without the questionable facial expressions and the constant knee "jumping", I love it <3

  • wow this is reeeeeaaallly dmb-esque...I haven't listened to him since '02...wow

  • He doesn't really play this song anymore live, which makes me really sad because it's my favorite of his, and actually my all time favorite song. Actually, with the exception of No Such Thing, he doesn't really play anything from room for squares. It guess that's part of growing as an artist

  • It's one of his personal favorites too so its strange that he doesnt play it live anymore. Maybe he doesnt want to get sick of it.

  • Yeah I think he is in a very kind of 'blues' phase right now, so he is playing a lot of Continuum and Trio stuff. I think when he has been touring for longer the older stuff will come back.

  • well he's always been bluesy just at the start of his career he played pop but he's always been a blues artist

  • ya it is a awesome song, and ya, he is in a more bluesy jazz phase at the moment but he has been starting to go back to the acoustic stuff, but i dont think he will play a lot of room for squares because he has said in interviews and such he wants to break away form everyone thinking he is a guy that sings sappy songs for the female audience.

  • Hey stirtz31... yeah you probably know just as much about JM as I do, im a huge fan as well, personally i wouldnt want John to play only "the blues"... I love the acoustic Room For Squares vibe, but Heavier Things is by far my favorite JM album, Continuum was a classic as well.. I really think this is Johns best performance ive seen on t.v or live. He is in the zone and is the best artist to come out of this decade.. next would be Coldplay, The Killers or for Rap Music it would be Eminem..!!!!!

  • How the hell does he make such a husky voice sound so good.

  • To keep this love alive!

  • did he just say "to keep this little life" at the end?

  • "To keep this love alive"

  • i see

  • does anyone know how to do that thing that the second guitar does? The train-like chugging?

  • That chugging sound your hearing is an EBOW being moved across and up and down on the stings creating the desired chugging effect.

  • At 1:56 you can see the other guitarist using the EBOW on his Les Paul.

  • At :31 you can see upclose before he slows down the EBOW

  • this is my favorite of his songs and i just got 'any given thursday' yesterday. i love the lead-up, it really catches you by surprise when he jumps into the actual song. well done!

  • Good show! I love his beat and it is always fun to watch!

  • hes a very good musician but hes so hard to watch

  • i hate to agree with ya but damn you're right

  • the intro is the greatest thing ever

  • Fantastic song, one of my favorites. It melts my heart every time I hear it!

  • great!

  • my current craze:D

  • well he is self-centered but not always in a bad way. Its just an artist this and the music is so much about his feelings, thoughts and experiences that it sometimes gives off the wrong message but i know what you mean though

  • you clearly haven't seen him anytime soon.

go buy Where The Light Is and watch it.

  • I think it`s good the way it is ... yes he stands often alone in the spotlight, but I like it, especially in this video in the beginning. Cause it has something macical ... He, all alone, just with his guitar in the light, around just darkness ...It`s so dramatic. Lokk at 0:19. And I like 0:28! :)

  • this is John Mayer, not John Mayer Band, geddit? when he does the Trio it's a band, so, AGT is his solo concert, the others back him up, so, I guess he deserves the spotlight? haha.

  • Well maybe he should let other people connect with the crowd but you have to remember he's promoted himself as being a solo artist

and he's written almost all the songs he performs.

Idk but he does get some liberties.

But I do understand where you're coming from.

  • he's called 'john mayer' for a reason. not 'john mayer and other band members'. and if you watch neon live in Birmingham Alabama, you'll find he let's them all have manic solos, and then congratulates them at the end. so shh mate.

  • well he better does that. but there's no denying the fact that he's self centred and rude wen he feels like. anyway i'm a big fan of his music, just not one of him as a person. anyway even Bruce springsteen is called Boss for a reason. but he never overshadows the E-Street band. JMT is why John Mayer is John Mayer. befor that he was a candy loving chocolate chic. So Shh back to you mate.

  • yeah. but everyone else can be rude and self centered like him. it's just he's so famous everyone thinks they can criticise.

    so ech hem. shhh.

  • i so pity you buddy. You're one of those who worship someone cuz he/she does something you like, irrespective of their character. Shows you have no dignity and sense of righteousness. I'm sure you're voting for McCain. I am just waiting for the day when you finally get to see John Mayer, put forward your little notepad for an autograph, and instead of signing it he shows you the finger and craps something to you in japanese. you'll come crying to me then!! lmao and Shhh...tup

  • someone has something against everyone!?

you're babbling paragraph above just made me laugh. and maate, already got mayer's signature from seeing him in Birmingham, so once again. failed.

and please, just stop embarrassing yourself. shh.

  • well i was only suspecting you have no dignity. you actually go on to prove that by standing in a crowd to get a scribble on a pice of paper then show it off to your friends. and you laugh wen someone says you have bo dignity. jeez man, you gotta go see a shrink. may be the same one JM is seeing. haha. i'm sure you're laughin cuz i am

PS: oh, and i've reported you as a spam so dont bother replying. just shh.lmao

  • bahhhaaahaaa. i'd vote obama first. and second. did you by any chance eat a twat for breakfest? becuase you know. you are what you are.

AHHH NO. don't report me as spam!!! GOD STOP HIM! Shh. i think is correct.

Oh and take the hint you keep getting minuses off of your comments made here. shh. again. take that hint too.

  • I'm curious. Why is it that you think Mayer is rude and self-centered?

  • i'm glad you finally shut the fuck up

  • us libras are like that sumtimes ... sorry:)

  • You're an idiot. He was a solo artist then. He did introduce the drummer in another song on AGT. When he was in the Trio he always introduced Steve Jordan and Pino because he knew he was standing on stage with some great musicians. It would be stupid for a solo artist to bring other people on stage just to further their careers when you're trying to make a name for yourself. I cant even tell you how retarded your statement was.

  • i really love this song and wow...

  • sorry.....my mistake

  • can anyone tell me what 3x5 means? I have no clue...:S

  • MooWBooW:

sounds like the size of a picture. 'Cause he sings "didn't have a camera by my side this time", and that leaves him with "no more 3x5" pictures to put in the envelope that contains the letter he sings about in the beginning. :)

  • Heej PI3ss,

Thanks for the explanation!Never thought about it that way, but it's a beautiful way to put it, instead of the word "picture" haha

    xx

  • 3x5 is a type of film. the standard size of a photograph that would be developed by film is 4x6, but also available are 5x7 and 8x10, respectively. the 3x5 is actually a fuji film, typically used by professional photographers, particularly because it translates well to slides without any cropping or distortions.

  • ahahhh yeh. but this is a song, not a photography class.

  • if there is any debate over if he's out of breath or not play 3:26-3:42 and listen closely. still genious.

  • omg! really? day light?? HAHA

  • i like the way that in where the light is they took out A LOT of the crowd screaming (unlike this - any given thursday) its too deafening. (especially in comfortable)

  • I love this song so incredibly much...it's my favorite of all time. The lyrics, the sound of it...just blow my mind. I'm seeing John live tomorrow night, I really hope he plays this because it would make my summer!

  • this song is perfect!! i'm seeing him on 8-30-2008 at the ford ampitheatre (tampa)

  • I swear to god if someone says one more thing about those jonas kids. -_-

  • I have just rediscovered John Mayer. I've always been a fan, but the way he played this song just blew my mind. I spent all day figuring out how to play it just so I can hear it whenever I want...

By the way, I'm so stoked to see him in July at Tinley Park!!!

  • Im gonna be at that concert too.

And his new DVD came out today I'm about to go pick it up.

  • i am going to.... and that dvd is fucking sick

  • Lawn Seats?

  • I would have to say that this is one of john mayers best perfomances, if not the best!

  • Lawn seats?

  • yep..lawn seats...should outrageous.

  • im really not enjoying the way he sings in this one, its like hes got a masssive loogie in his throat.

  • He didn't enjoy the way he sang it either. Its on the DVD commentary. He thinks its because he was nervous (he suffers anxiety attacks every so often).

  • See you in July!

  • love the intro too!

see you in june in hyde park john!!!!

  • Love the intro!

  • This song gets better and better the more I hear it.

  • Respect John Mayer!!!

  • hey mrs peter fuckin zeeke, do not call John Mayer a fuck face, he has more talent than youll ever have, so just shut the hell up, FUCK YOU and i bet you you are fucking your boyfriend right now

  • this is one of my all time favorite songs... john mayer's music always speaks to me...

  • this is kevin jonas (of the jonas brothers) favorite song. i can see why. this is good stuff.

  • nobody cares about jonas brothers

  • truer words have never been spoken:P

  • the music, the feeling...is here with john. the cheesy, the cocky, the famous for nothing but a girl with two names, is with the Jonas dudes.

  • thaaaaaank YOU

    lol

i mean its not so much them that piss me off

    its the fans

    =/

  • they don't though do they

  • Jonas Bros dont really rock.. theyre just famous for their looks.

  • Yeah they blow, not real musicians.

  • it is a great song...to bad none of them could even try to pull off mayer cause there jsut not that talented

  • pause at 1:33 looks funny :)

    he's my idol

  • I met him before he was huge...in madison, wi...when he played the barrymore...couldnt have been a nicer guy..im a fan for life..who would know that he would turn out to be one of the best guitarist ever!

  • Hey, DeeCee8121 thanks for turning me onto Steve Reich. Awesome.

  • I loved this Concert!!! He was a monster and Day light killed his bass solo!! I'm playing wit him one day!! (John Mayer that is!!)

  • is the other guitarist using an ebow?

  • no he isnt

  • well then how's he making that sound?
