Well, the bodhran player is downright awesome, the band is great in all, and the vocalists whistle playing is pretty good. Her vocals aren't amazing but she's pretty enough to make up for it I suppose. I just wonder if she's not kind of being used for eye candy, I somewhat dislike when female vocalists are used as gimmicks, but supposing that's not the case all and all pretty good. Not as good as Silly Wizards version, but this band has potential
that is so as the bulk of the song is as it should be apart from part of one verse which she's got completely incorrect. So it is a mistake! Not the end of the world right enough - and I take it most folk they sing it too would never know anyway!
"they remade it for those americans who don't understand a scottish accent" I don't think it is the song to sing if you want your American audience (or in fact any audience) to understand every word anyway :-) How many Americans would know what "weighbauk" is? Or other words like gouk, elwand, baukit, blads or arles? All these remain in the version untouched. she basically hasn't changed the song apart from those two lines I mentioned which makes me think it is an error rather than deliberate
@n7275 The point is that all the words I mentioned are not only Scots dialect words - but they are for the most part archaic Scots dialect words mostly associated with crafts and trades. The only ones of those that I mentioned which are still in common usage here are 'gouk' and perhaps 'baukit'. An audience doesn't have the opportunity to sit down and decipher songs word for word and try to work it out. The other poster suggested they remade the song for an American audience but I don't think
Though all in all in reading my posts It do sound too critical. Musically the version is good and as I said in my first post she has a nice voice. So treat it as an explantion as to why this song sounds a wee bit iffy for some!
it doesn't appear to be correct either. To me the "ether, man" does sound like "other man" but fair do you may be right and that could be accent. Still you've got to appreciate that what sounds ok to you may sound mighty peculiar to some people from Scotland. However as I said in my post it isn't so much the pronounciation its the changing of a whole line of lyirc to make it nonsensical. My second example after range should have been fringe! Differnt sounding 'g' which surely isn't just accent
@xThanatosMorsx She definitely doesn't seem to be saying "stang'd or in fact even sting'd which could be used" as the first part of those would rhyme with bang or sing. It is definitely (stranged or stringed) the first part rhyming with range or string. Which doesn't make any kind of sense. So no I don't think they have just changed the pronounciation. I think they've just taken an approximation of what they think is being said and guesses. I can't make out what she sings in the first line but
@xThanatosMorsx Not just the pronounciation! Verse two is very weird. I don't know what she says in the first line but the second seems to be (stranged with another man) or perhaps (stringed with another man) which would mean I know not what. The words are (stang'd wi an ether, man) as in (man, he got stung by an adder). I know it must be hard to pick up on the Borders Scots dialect which it is written in but if you're going to sing it make an effort to find out what you're singing. Nice voice!
I always like folk singin aboot ma ancestors an that wee lassie says ma name really guid. It's a pity most of the bands play it in an Irish tone. DonnyMac was / is a Jacobite Highlander even the songs words tells ye that and aboot his exchanges wi the Tacs man.. Here's tae King James and ma Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather and Father, Alba Gu Brath
I've been to a bunch of Irish festivals with plenty of people from Ireland that sung. Anytime someone from any English speaking country sings, they sound like Americans. That's just how English is. All I care about is that this is a great Irish song with a hot vocalist.
@raggedsail Actually, it's a Scottish song. Many of the words are from lowland scots, and for the correct pronunciation you might want to check out the version by Silly Wizard, with Andy M Stewart singing. This is a fantastic version also, however. ;)
Good job you guys and girl you guys and girl where great. The girl has a great voice (and she is hot to lol) and the guys where good to but the girl was the best. sorry guys and i love this song
For those of you who knock the performance and probably have little experience I challenge you to do the song better. Never knock it until you can out do the performer. In all honesty, fantastic work! Can't wait to see the group on March 19th
Interesting take of the song. vocals...eh. The pronunciation was off quite a bit which was very annoying, but jeez that bodhran player is great! All in all this is still no comparison at all to Silly Wizard.
I've replayed this like 20 times. Excellent, excellent version. Definitely want to get a copy of the album, and am anxious to hear the version of Blackbird. :)
Spot on. This song is about fighting, and sure doesn't sound too well sung this high. And she really fails to provide the correct pronounciation on many phrases. Very poor preformance, vocal-wise.
The girl is daughter of man or Tuatha Dé Danann?

I get the feeling that the singer is concentrating more on the way she's singing the song (her stage presence) than what she's singing.
On a side note, I don't think this song should be sung in such a high pitched voice.

I knew this song in czech translation sang by men and it had absolutely different atmosphere-you almost saw the misty hills and burning fires.
I don't say this interpretation isn't pretty-it's just something completely diferent.
