such a strange but enthralling song. Dramatic, with it's sixties refrain ("Hey Mr. Heartache" is not exactly modern), and brooding 80's dance pop synth. It's soulful at the same time, foreshadowing her best album, "Now and Forever". Love it and still, after 22 years, don't know exactly what to make of it.
@scarcastic Now and Forever is NOT her best album. Her best album is probably 'Close'. If it isn't Close it's definately something she did in the 80s.
@flares (I love your definitive "NOT" and then the less-sure "probably" 'Close'). So dramatic for a simple difference of opinion. Bejesus. I think "Close" is overrated. "Teases and Dares" was certainly more interesting, for one.
@scarcastic The reason I said NOT in capitals is because it wasn't from the 80s. The reason I said 'probably' in lowercase is because she released quite a few albums in the 80s. You say Close is overreated but think of all the great hits on there like You Came, Never trust a stranger, Four letter word, Hey M.H., etc. These records will be remembered for years to come. Her earlier stuff like Child come away, The Touch, House of salome, Water on glass etc is also great.
@flares you're just not paying attention. I never said "Now & Forever" was from the eighties. I said the track foreshadows that white soul sound. But, you know that...that's why you wrote "something she did in the 80s", unlike N&F. Maybe you just like to yak, yak, yak. Dunno. Glad you like Kim, tho.
@scarcastic Listen, I didn't say that you said N&F was from the 80s. I said that N&F wasn't her best album because it WASN'T from the 80s. To put it simply, all the best records she ever did were from the 80s. NOTHING can beat her early new wave type records like Water On Glass, Cambodia, Chequered Love etc followed by her big power pop hits like Rage To Love, You Keep Me hanging On, You Came, Another Step, Never Trust A Stranger. Nothing she did in the 90s compares to these songs.
@flares Actually, track for track I would have to agree with you - now that you've clarified - that they are stronger singles. But, I think the strongest album in total is "Now & Forever". Love or hate the sound, I think she could've sold half the albums tracks to the likes of Mariah Carey(90s Mariah) for hits. And vocally, it is, for me, without a doubt her best work. It has a cohesive quality her other albums lack. Dat's all.
@scarcastic To be honest the sound of someone's voice is not the main thing that I look for in a song. I've always been far more interested in the sound and most importantly the melody of the record. For eg. Take a record like Cambodia. Great synthesizers with a catchy melody. It wouldn't matter whether it was Kim Wilde, Debbie Harry or Kate Bush singing it. If the arrangement and sound were EXACTLY the same as KW's version I'd like it just as much. Didn't get songs as good as that in the 90s.
@flares uh, wow. In this whole thread, that was the only time I mentioned her vocals...and not until after I agreed the 80s singles were stronger. You just want to disagree; win "biggest fan" or something. You should just type things into your computer, then read them back to yourself, out loud. I think you'd enjoy that more. I know I would. ciao!
This song is incredibly wonderful, wonderful Fly me to the beautiful days of childhood, this art will not be repeated again, I remember the teachers punished because I hear Kim Wilde during a lesson, good days
If you dig harder, as I did, you'll find a DVD release with the following songs: Kids in America, Chequered Love, Cambodia, View From a Bridge, You Keep Me Hangin' On, Another Step (Closer to You), You Came, Never Trust A Stranger, Four Letter Word, Love is Holy, If I Can't Have You, Say You Really Want Me, Schoolgirl, Million Miles Away, Born To Be Wild.
i wish MCA (Universal) will put together Kim Wilde complete "Singles Collection DVD" with Great videos like Who do you think you are, Million Miles Away, If i can't have u, Breakin away, Shame, In My life etc...she was the Queen of the videos without DVD release???
This is my ALL TIME favorite Kim Wilde song, it was **seriously** underrated, it should have been more promoted, and I think it would have been more a lot more successful on the music charts!!!!
I don't agree with you at all. Since early nineties, basically since her Close album, her musical direction was going more like dance and commercial! And her star was fallin'.
She was doing much better in the eighties! Her looks as well. Okay, she wasn't that sexy in this period but she was original as hell. Can't say that of her Mr. Heartache period and after......unfortunately. She started to make cheap music and playing da sexbomb :-(
This song will FOREVER remind of summer 1988, when Kim Wilde toured Europe supporting Michael Jackson in his Bad World Tour. I remember standing in the front row i Gothenburg hearing Kim Wilde and waiting for Michael.
Yes, the song was so underrated, that when I hear Junior was backing vocals;
I thought the reference was about the spanish singer Junior-with the same name. It's just incredible how this wonderful song is yet a mistery for many in america.
I think it's criminal that Kim never did any promotion over here in the U.S. She had a #1 hit in 1987 with "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and did absolutely nothing! No touring (that I'm aware of) or anything. She toured the next year with Michael Jackson but we never hear anything of her over here in the states. This song is one of her more R&B infused songs I think. Nonetheless I love you Kim!
I agree that this is very much soulful, I knew that from day one! It should have been shipped to US Urban radio. What's even better is that I can hear Junior singing back up during the bridge of the song, another underrated UK Soul singer.
I was born on the 90's but my mom said that she was very popular in Sweden and were on many top lists on the 80's here in Sweden but she is not popular any more with her new songs or the oldies. :(
His name was Jesse Birdsall, and he was in that crap spy series with Craig MacLachlan (Henery Ramsay in Neighbours) and it was called Bugs, absolute shite
Yes it is. He's also been in "The Bill", and that flopped drama series "Sunburn" which starred Michelle Collins who couldn't even sing the theme tune. In fact I don't think she was cut out to be a popstar. She should stick to acting in my opinion.
i'm portuguse and i found this kim's look very glamourous and the video and the music, everything and deliciouly tragic...i don't know why kim in some time of her carrer her look remind me of miss m monroe look...
I'm not a fan of this era in her career. It sounds too unoriginal for her. As always though, she has a great voice and it would be the only reason why I'd listen to this song.
I disagree about unoriginal - in fact, I find songs like this one very distinctive of Kim's style and I can't think of any other song that sounds like this one - having said that, it's not my fave of hers, and one of the weakest on the Closer album, Another Step, for one, was catchier.
The vocalist you can hear at 02:30 is Junior - remember him? On the album version he sings a few lines at the end of the song, but this was obviously edited out for the single (to make it performable in his absence). He also appeared on another Kim Wilde song, "Another Step", a couple of years earlier.
Hey, darling...do you know what you're looking for??? I like this song and remember it was a huge hit back in 80's. Kim was perfect in this video and it's one of my favourite pop songs...good job Kim. Thanks a lot.
