I have a four month old aussie shepherd...is she still too young for the gentle leader? We've been walking her for the last month or so...she loves it but pulls quite a bit.
My sister has spent months trying to get her golden retriever to walk using Cesar Milan's methods to no avail. The dog would pull constantly on every walk, lurch after other dogs and people and generally ignore the person walking her. Twenty minutes on the gentle leader using this video to adjust fit and she was walking relaxed without pulling at all. On her second half hour walk I was able to get her to sit calmly while a neighbor walked by with his two dogs. No lunging zero. Worth every dime.
Just bought this today. My 6mo old lab/golden was a puller and no joy to walk. Now, after 3 minutes on the path here in beautiful Hawaii...he was SO amazingly calm and walked right next to me and didn't pull once! AMAZING! i am going to facebook this thing right now!
@chriswthurke What size did you use? I also have a small lab, and I thought of using this since mine does pull too (the first minutes of walking or when she sees an other dog). She's about 65lbs but could be 10lbs less xD, which is a big difference from my old lab who was 125lbs.
I thought of buying one on ebay but the measures aren't always there.
my dog CONSTANTLY gets the muzzle part of the gentle leader off within seconds, HELP! what can i do?! he lashes out like a mad man and until he gets free of the muzzle.
@xoselle First, I suggest getting a Haltie, they have more (in my oppinion) webbing and material peices to help keep the collar on. Also, make sure the Haltie's collar peice, the part that goes around the neck, is as close to the ears and tight. This will keep the collar close to the face and make it harder for your dog to get it off. If that doesn't work, get a prong collar. Doesn't hurt the dog, cause pain, or any damage to the dog whatsoever. Do your homework, they are not bad for your dog.
Wow... I just put this on my 50lbs lab.. She is a terrible dog for the first 30 minutes of every walk we've ever gone on, pulling and not listening...
I put the gentle lead on her, and literally within 2 minutes of our walk (first time use) she was walking beside me and looking at me for direction... Highly recommend thus to anyone with a problem walker.. And I've only used it once
I don't like how hard you have to set the neck piece over the dog's trachea. It's too much pressure on the trachea, IMO. It doesn't collapse it, but it does, most certainly, put pressure on it. (The manufacturer says the #1 common mistake is that users don't tighten the neck piece to the point the user can only fit one finger under it.) It's not intermittent high pressure I'm concerned about, which could be reduced via training, it's constant high pressure and results years down the road.
yeah, this is a great concept and works really well for about the first five-six weeks untill your dog develops seriously strong neck muscles as was the case for my medium sized basenji super-dog...lol

Make sure you put the gentle leader on correctly and be gentle with it. I have seen dogs develop eye problems from serious users of the "gentle" leader
I just adopted an 11 month old Golden Retriever. He has absolutely no leash experience, so walking him is a nightmare. @calimntgirl34 I'd HIGHLY recommend it. I have a lab/pit mix (also was a puller and a puppy too, around the same age too), just when you get it, WATCH THE VIDEO. 99% of the time people whine that it doesn't work when, in reality, they put the collar on wrong/didn't watch the video and, therefore, are confusing the dog.
@VirtualInsanity Thanks! I got one, and I have to say...NIGHT AND DAY difference. He is so well behaved on walks now! This is a lifesaver! I honestly can't believe the difference it makes...
My adorable Basst male Hound was a terrible walket before the GL. He wanted to stop everywhere to smell everything and he, being a strong dog, made my arm sore. Now, he must walk when i gently pull him and we get a more from our walks.
Never could get the GL to fit right on my dog. The recommended tightness always made him make a weird choking noise that I didn't like, and the noseband cut into his face when he pulled. He hated it.
I personally prefer the Halti. The noseband is padded, never upsets his nose, and loosens off when he isn't pulling. He doesn't LIKE it, but he doesn't hate it so much either.
Also, just something I do, give the dog's face a bit of a rub after you take the head harness off. They like that.
We got the Gentle Leader and the Halti for our Golden Retriever puppy. The Halti's sizing was completely whacked out, so we kept the Gentle Leader. He doesn't like it and it seems like we can't get it on right -- it keeps slipping down the back of his skull and then the connection for the leash ends up on the side of his jaw.
I am puppy sitting a 9 month old boxer. His "mom" and "dad' are at the hospital caring for their preemie twins born @ 25 weeks. I tried to walk him with his regular collar. We'll just say it didn't go well. Then I found the gentle leader in his bag of stuff. I watched the video. Put it on him and we just returned from a very pleasant walk. Wow!!! What an improvement!! I'm very impressed.
Thanks for this! I am pet sitting for a friend of mine's family and I couldn't figure out how to put Buddy's leash on. Any way I tried, I came up with the ring on top of the snout. xD Now I wanna know how to stop him from trying to remove it. He's great when walking or when on hard ground, but when we step into the grass or onto carpet, he drops and won't stop trying to get it off.
I love my gentle leader!! I think someone use it as a quick fix rather than leash training. My dog is only on her GL until I can afford professional training.
I had pulling issues with my GSP. After some research I decided to try the Gentle Leader. Stopped the pulling and I was able to use it to train my dog to walk by my side. I can even go on runs with him and it is no issue. He went from pulling to by my side in a matter of a few walks. Make sure you fit it correctly and remember it is a training tool to help you get your dog to walk properly. Once accomplished you can move on to whatever lead you wish. Good Luck and happy walking.
I have a black lab/springer cross who lunges and pulls. He doesn't take treats when outside and Cesar Millan's methods just hurt my arm even more but had no real effect.
In desperation, I bought a GL and spent weeks trying to get him accustomed to it. It seemed to be taking forever, eventually I just started using it for walks. He still claws at it but this is slowly stopping. Still the best purchase ever!
I got a head collar for my border collie and it was the best $20 I have ever spent. My dog would pull and tug when we went for a walk, it was no fun for me or the dog, and my wife and kids couldnt take scout for walk. He changed 100% and now even my 5 year old can take the leash.
Hey I was wondering where these can be found, like at Target or Fred Meyer or Petsmart and places like that. Also, what's the average cost of one of these collars, and are there different sizes? I have a large Labrador Retriever and he's very unruly on the leash. Thanks
Hi, I have been making my dog wear the GL when we feed him. He starts looking forward to wearing it now that he knows it means he'll receive food. However, right afterwards, he'll try to remove it. It's been about 2-3 weeks since we've been doing this. How can we make him not want to take it off after he eats?
My dog is a terrible walker. We got him a Gentle Leader, and he's terribly depressed now that he wears it. He constantly tries to take it off, and even his eyes are red. He's also extreme disobedient. Being a voracious dog, he is always in search of food. But once you put the Gentle Leader on, he won't do anything for the treat. Completely different dog, but not in a good way. Don't know what to do.
In my experience 95% of the dogs that I put gentle leaders on hate them. I don't start off walking the dogs on the GL. I always put it on, give them a treat, take it off. Then I put it on, feed dinner, take it off. I associate it over with something positive until they look forward to putting it on.
Izzy, the pitbull in this video HATED the GL. Now I can out it on and take her for a walk - no problems. Stick with it, you'll be happy with the results.
Thanks, I'll try it out. I have watched the DVD already, and they didn't mention acclimating the dog BEFORE using it for walks, so I think that is a good idea.
Great recommendation! I just got one for my Jack Russell and he was having a fit with it when I first put it on. I told him he's a good boy and gave him a tasty treat and then took it off. From what I've read it's just about getting them used to the feeling of the collar across the nose and like you said for it to be a positive experience. Great video and advice!
Thanks for this.. I have a 2 year old Pitt-Mastiff mix rescue that was not taken on walks.. She is very powerful and have been using a prong. Been trying a leader and she absolutely hates it. She has some fear aggression issues.. and I think the leader is making it worse. I'll get her socialized and work on the leader some more.
I use this for my german shepherd and I love it. She was already highly trained by me beforehand so its wasn't bought to control pulling. They are lightweight, gentle, and comfortable unlike most other collars and works well for the rare occasion where I do correct her behaviour. Mostly it gives me total control when we are going for runs because I can just lightly tug her head to tell her she needs to slow down. I did try this collar on my uncle's boxer who pulls and it worked wonders.
Gentle Leader is OK for certain sensitive dogs, but still not very healthy since it twist the dog's neck muscles. Dogs are not horses. If you used Choke Chain or Prong collar correctly, you do not need to be yanking a dog nor is painful to them. There are many ways and methods to train dogs, but none is the best. You just have to find what works for one particular dog as each dogs are different.
They come in small, medium and large and are adjustable to a certain extent. By the time you start walking your puppy daily on a lead they should be in the size of gentle leader that they'll be using forever. My Great Dane, for example, stayed in a large from 8 months to 9 years. All we had to do was adjust the size.
i want one of those 4 my dogs.....my old dog isnt rly a prob. cause hes old and gtes tired out easily...i still want one 4 him tho cause the 1st block he will pull alot......and i also have a 2 yr old dog that will choke herself from pulling so much!!!!!!
I like the Halti better since it has a "safety leash" included with it. In case the dog struggles and removes the harness from their head, there is still a leash attached to their collar via this safety leash.
I always carry a backup leash that is just one of the simple slide over the head with with the hoop that the leash goes through. It's also helpful if you encounter another dog that is running lose and he/she needs help getting home. We've saved a couple dogs in the neighborhood when out on our walks.
i never had anything but a soft leash looped as a choker
with my weim(adopted at 3), i taught her heel first on leash, then on off leash walks, started practicing offleash Heel, within a few sessions she was doing it
offleash it helps to stick ur hands out low- and to ur sides to make the dog understand the barrier
I love the gentle leader, I dog sit and it makes my life much easier walking the groups together w none of them pulling. i highly recommend this to anyone who has a dog that freaks out or generally pulls! I love it, and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world
Yes! My great dane settles right in beside me after a few tugs and walks naturally at my side. If your dog isn't used to walking like that, it make take a few minutes, but I've seen really obstinate pullers do the same thing within 5 to 10 minutes of walking. My friend used one on her dog, but made sure that the first time they walked with it, she did it around her backyard so there would be less distractions
We have these collars for both our Golden Retriever and German Shepherd and they are a huge lifesaver, especially with our young Golden who loves to pull the leash!
I bought a GL for my GSD and he stopped pulling right away, but after the first use, i noticed it left a mark across his nose. After using the GL a couple more times, the mark i was seeing in the fur, was actually the skin being broken. This collar was fitting properly, yet cut my dogs nose, i have returned the leader to the store, and have gone back to training. I will add that i did fit the GL properly.and was told by the GL rep. this sometimes happens .
I use the GL on my two boxers and It's worth every penny. I can walk my two doggies with one pinky. No more pulling and being dragged around. I love this item and would highly recommend it to everyone who "would like to take their dogs on walks more often".
Thanks for this video. I haven't used my dog's Gentle Leader for a while, and when I went to put it on him yesterday, I couldn't figure out why it didn't look right. Your video clarified exactly how to put it on properly.
its seems like a good collar for medium dogs and maybe even some MATURE dogs but my 11 month old labrador is 1 of the most enerjetic and unmature labs in the world but if he gets a hang of somthing he is great but when it comes to walking he actually walks me instead of me walking him sooooo!!!
since he pulls more than a bull!!! should i use this and if i do when my dog pulls really hard will it inflict pain????
you have thoose things for labs to, but youre dog is young and still learns easy, you should not need that, actually only older dogs without a good training need that.
my dog hates the GL, but we have only had it on her for one day. Im not sure if i should stop using it, or try it out for a little longer. She will not go to the bathroom with it on.
Just used the GL for the first time on a big rescue dog I've had for 2 months...I'm amazed. He's a good dog other than his lack of leash-training...at 75 lbs to my 110, dog-walking was a major pain. Aside from trying to rub it off twice, we've just come back from a relaxed 2-hour walk. It's almost as if the GL triggered some old obedience lessons he'd had in the past...he heeled 90% of the time...80% up from previous walks!
As a handler I'm not too keen on the GL because I have seen too many owners really yank to correct the dogs head and the dog gets scared . I have seen dogs literally walk with there head cocked and walk sideways not straight forward like an excited race horse. I have actually stopped people to help out and helped them fit it properly. If you choose to use one use for training and then work yourself off of it, just like for a prong collar or pinch.
The GL is great. We got one at our puppy's obedience class after he was acting up, pitching a fit. He is now the star of the class. German shepherd and very strong, but behaves with the gl on. He is learning well with it.
I beg to differ with Pupscott - the gentle leader IS a training tool, as a certified dog trainer, I have used the gentle leader to train many dogs to walk nicely on a leash.
The gentle leader initially teaches the dog not to pull, once the dog gets the idea, the next thing is to remove the part that goes around the nose, if dog pulls, back on it goes, the dog will soon get the idea. Next thing to remove is the part clipped behind his ears, no pulling, remove completely.
This video was really good, unlike tanother video i previously viewed with a lady & a golden retirever, she failed to show the second part in which she didnt show how the center pops up thru the center and you put that over the snout.
Great video, clearly shows how to use the collar and how to adjust, which is fantastic. We were looking for a new collar for our two German Shepherds, and looks like we're definatly going to go purchase the Gentle Leader. Thanks for the video on it, and we'll be checking out your other videos too!
Only other thing I would add, is to attach the leash to the collar in addition to the gentle leader as a safety. When I first used the gentle leader on one of my dogs, of course he resisted, he was able to slip it over his head and got loose. Fortunately he didn't realize he was "free" and I was able to rehalter him. From that point on I've always attached the leash to both the gentle leader and the collar as a safety.
If the GL is fitted correctly -- high and very, very snug at the back of the neck -- this kind of back-up attachment is not needed. The neck strap should be so snug that you can barely fit one finger underneath. Because of a dog's anatomy, it will NOT choke or hurt the dog. Enjoy!
I love my gentle leader for my American Staffordshire Terrier. He is so strong and he doesn't pull at all. Though it pisses me off when people say its a muzzle. My dog doesn't bite. ;[
my 8 month old lab/boxer female,is getting very aggressive.we're trying to do different things with her.we cant take her for walks, cause she flips out.one minute, walks nice, the next minute will growl, jump on us,bite us..etc. will this gentle leader stop her from jumping, and biting us? or only a prong or slip/choke collar correct that?
I have tried almost everything to get my dog to stop pulling and I thought I would never use a chocker but they did work for my dog for a bit but then she went to pulling so hard that her eyes went red so I moved to trying out the gentle leader harness but she still pulled and was coughing when she did. The only thing that works for her is getting her to pull a tire which she loves but it would be nice if I could walk her without having to do this; do you think this collar would work for her?
Using a collar like this stopped the pulling, but my dog is so distracted with trying to get it off that he won't walk at all. When he does walk he does nose dives into the street/grass/dirt trying to get it off. He is a cavalier so his short nose and big eyes make it especially uncomfortable for him. How can I make my dog more comfortable in this and how do I wean him off of it in the future?
My dogs did the same thing when I first started using the leader. I started using it in the house to get them used to it. It took them a few days, but now they love it. Makes walking much more enjoyable.
I can't say enough great things about this collar! I have a German Shepherd-Boxer mix 2-year-old dog who is very excitable and has been almost untrainable. Choke collars & obedience training only had mild success. He still lunged and dragged when on a leash. With our first walk tonight on the Gentle Leader, he flipped out a bit, but for the most part, walked beside me and never once pulled, dragged me or lunged. AMAZING! Wish I'd bought it long ago!
I put this on my dog today for first time and my dog did not drag me for once :)It´s miracle. I am happy for that patent because my grandmother had hard time with the dog which is too strong. But now it´s over :) Dog is good with it now :)
First time I walked Buddy he pulled so hard, I strained a back muscle..so I just tried the Gentel Leader today on my in-law's nice, but poorly trained Golden Retriever. He did kind of freak at first, but soon he was walking by side with very little pulling. It's actually designed to put pressure around the muzzle (and back of head) which is what pack leaders do to teach other dogs to submit. My sister, the vet, recommended it to me. Buddy did try to get it off when we got home :-)
I love this harness, but my dog has an incredibly hard time adjusting to it! We got it when he broke a leg (he was harness trained and was straining on the harness as he was recovering) and it was fantastically useful... he just can't stand it, so it's a mixed blessing.
That would matter if I used a choke chain to train with but I don't. I'm a full-time trainer so I have a pretty good idea of how dogs work. I teach loose leash walking from the very beginning and it often takes less time than getting a dog used to a GL.
It took my American Staffordshire Terrier two days to get use to his. Some people need them for bigger dogs and espically when I got mine for six doillars. I can't afford a good trainer. My dog loves his. The first day he wanted it off but he is use to it and love to see it. I don't even have to get him to come. He is allways sitting and ready to go when he sees it. I allways don't have to use it for my other American Staffordshire Terrier anymore. He stopped pulling after a week of useing it.
Because the dog isn't "trained" and it will never be trained to walk nicely with one on. GLs do nothing to work toward the goal of a trained dog. They're a management tool- not a training tool- and as such, if that's what you want, fine, but don't call it training.
It can be used either way! An owner can use it for lifetime management OR can use the GL for control WHILE they reinforce the dog for polite walking beside them. Then, as another poster mentioned, you can fade the use of the GL. So - it serves both purposes. I should know - I learned from the inventor himself!
It's the training that is training the dog, not the GL. My problem with it is that it gets in the way of training- you work with the dog with it on but once it comes off, you're back to square one and then have to start the training again without it since dogs don't generalize.
You may as well start with a regular leash- in my experience, it takes a lot less time.
Thanks so much for posting this how to for the gentle leader. I bought two for our labs and had taken them for two walks with an incorrect positioning. Your video helped me understand how to use this leader correctly. Much appreciated!
I have a 3 year old German Shepherd who pulls and is leash/fence agressive towards other dogs. The Gentle Leader is very helpful. She pays more attention to me, walks by my side, and her anxiety level does build as quickly. When I used a muzzle and martingale collar she pulled badly and kept choking. Using the Gentle Leader does not make me worry because I know she is safer. I feel like I have more control over her behavior.
I just bought the Gentle Leader and my 5 months Bernese Mountain dog doesn't seem to get acustomed to it. She just tries to remove it with her front paws. We give her treats as we walk to get her attention focused somewhere else but a few minutes after she goes wild again trying to take it off... My question is , how do you get your dog accustomed to the gentle leader ?
I have a four month old aussie shepherd...is she still too young for the gentle leader? We've been walking her for the last month or so...she loves it but pulls quite a bit.

The most amazing gaget I had. My walking session is now instantly wonderful, Im not being pulled the whole way and we both enjoy it now.

It's not choking them then, that's awesome! Would you recommend trying this on a puppy or only an older dog?
romerojrfam 1 year ago

Hey eric.So for that strap thats dangling on it nose,is that for pulling the dog?or you hook another leash onto it?
winniethepo0p 1 year ago
Thanks for this! I am pet sitting for a friend of mine's family and I couldn't figure out how to put Buddy's leash on. Any way I tried, I came up with the ring on top of the snout. xD Now I wanna know how to stop him from trying to remove it. He's great when walking or when on hard ground, but when we step into the grass or onto carpet, he drops and won't stop trying to get it off.

I love my gentle leader!! I think someone use it as a quick fix rather than leash training. My dog is only on her GL until I can afford professional training.
uglyxorgan 1 year ago

He changed 100% and now even my 5 year old can take the leash.
ramotribe 2 years ago
Hey I was wondering where these can be found, like at Target or Fred Meyer or Petsmart and places like that. Also, what's the average cost of one of these collars, and are there different sizes? I have a large Labrador Retriever and he's very unruly on the leash. Thanks

i would have thought about 20-25$ for the large one.

Hi, I have been making my dog wear the GL when we feed him. He starts looking forward to wearing it now that he knows it means he'll receive food. However, right afterwards, he'll try to remove it. It's been about 2-3 weeks since we've been doing this. How can we make him not want to take it off after he eats?
pyeclam 2 years ago
My dog is a terrible walker. We got him a Gentle Leader, and he's terribly depressed now that he wears it. He constantly tries to take it off, and even his eyes are red. He's also extreme disobedient. Being a voracious dog, he is always in search of food. But once you put the Gentle Leader on, he won't do anything for the treat. Completely different dog, but not in a good way. Don't know what to do.
pyeclam 2 years ago
In my experience 95% of the dogs that I put gentle leaders on hate them. I don't start off walking the dogs on the GL. I always put it on, give them a treat, take it off. Then I put it on, feed dinner, take it off. I associate it over with something positive until they look forward to putting it on.
Izzy, the pitbull in this video HATED the GL. Now I can out it on and take her for a walk - no problems. Stick with it, you'll be happy with the results.
Good luck

Thanks, I'll try it out. I have watched the DVD already, and they didn't mention acclimating the dog BEFORE using it for walks, so I think that is a good idea.
pyeclam 2 years ago 2

I'll definatly be trying this on my german shepherd. when he get excited he pulls like crazy. not much fun.
laurence265 2 years ago
I use this for my german shepherd and I love it. She was already highly trained by me beforehand so its wasn't bought to control pulling. They are lightweight, gentle, and comfortable unlike most other collars and works well for the rare occasion where I do correct her behaviour. Mostly it gives me total control when we are going for runs because I can just lightly tug her head to tell her she needs to slow down. I did try this collar on my uncle's boxer who pulls and it worked wonders.
oOFamousLastWordsOo 2 years ago
Gentle Leader is OK for certain sensitive dogs, but still not very healthy since it twist the dog's neck muscles. Dogs are not horses. If you used Choke Chain or Prong collar correctly, you do not need to be yanking a dog nor is painful to them. There are many ways and methods to train dogs, but none is the best. You just have to find what works for one particular dog as each dogs are different.

if i use a head halter can i use it on my puppy and then she can grow into or will i have to buy a new one l8er?
Luke13PL 2 years ago
They come in small, medium and large and are adjustable to a certain extent. By the time you start walking your puppy daily on a lead they should be in the size of gentle leader that they'll be using forever. My Great Dane, for example, stayed in a large from 8 months to 9 years. All we had to do was adjust the size.

I like the Halti better since it has a "safety leash" included with it. In case the dog struggles and removes the harness from their head, there is still a leash attached to their collar via this safety leash.
ucdcrush 2 years ago
Yes. Great point made. Whenever using a prong or one of these or similar collars you should have a backup if the dog gets loose.
ucdcrush, props to you :) and if someone else had already brought this point up, props to you as well :)
harp1725 2 years ago
I always carry a backup leash that is just one of the simple slide over the head with with the hoop that the leash goes through. It's also helpful if you encounter another dog that is running lose and he/she needs help getting home. We've saved a couple dogs in the neighborhood when out on our walks.

how long usually till the dog walks naturally by my side without the gentle leader?
atearofjoy 2 years ago
as long as it takes u to make the dog understand
i never had anything but a soft leash looped as a choker
with my weim(adopted at 3), i taught her heel first on leash, then on off leash walks, started practicing offleash Heel, within a few sessions she was doing it
offleash it helps to stick ur hands out low- and to ur sides to make the dog understand the barrier
but shed rather be out scouting and smelling!

Will the dog stop pulling after awhile on this collar or are you going to have to have it on each time for it not to pull?
jay733 2 years ago

I will add that i did fit the GL properly.and was told by the GL rep. this sometimes happens .

its seems like a good collar for medium dogs and maybe even some MATURE dogs but my 11 month old labrador is 1 of the most enerjetic and unmature labs in the world but if he gets a hang of somthing he is great but when it comes to walking he actually walks me instead of me walking him sooooo!!!
since he pulls more than a bull!!! should i use this and if i do when my dog pulls really hard will it inflict pain????

you have thoose things for labs to, but youre dog is young and still learns easy, you should not need that, actually only older dogs without a good training need that.

my dog hates the GL, but we have only had it on her for one day.

It's almost as if the GL triggered some old obedience lessons he'd had in the past...he heeled 90% of the time...80% up from previous walks!
gutmaniac 3 years ago
As a handler I'm not too keen on the GL because I have seen too many owners really yank to correct the dogs head and the dog gets scared . I have seen dogs literally walk with there head cocked and walk sideways not straight forward like an excited race horse. I have actually stopped people to help out and helped them fit it properly. If you choose to use one use for training and then work yourself off of it, just like for a prong collar or pinch.

Hhmm...what keeps the dog from getting out of the gentle lead collar? Won't they be able to get out of it by pulling away from you while facing you?

no...theres a strap on the back of thier neck

The GL is great. We got one at our puppy's obedience class after he was acting up, pitching a fit. He is now the star of the class. German shepherd and very strong, but behaves with the gl on. He is learning well with it.
janhutchin 3 years ago
I beg to differ with Pupscott - the gentle leader IS a training tool, as a certified dog trainer, I have used the gentle leader to train many dogs to walk nicely on a leash.
The gentle leader initially teaches the dog not to pull, once the dog gets the idea, the next thing is to remove the part that goes around the nose, if dog pulls, back on it goes, the dog will soon get the idea. Next thing to remove is the part clipped behind his ears, no pulling, remove completely.

This video was really good, unlike tanother video i previously viewed with a lady & a golden retirever, she failed to show the second part in which she didnt show how the center pops up thru the center and you put that over the snout.
hopefully this will help our JRT lol

Great video, clearly shows how to use the collar and how to adjust, which is fantastic. We were looking for a new collar for our two German Shepherds, and looks like we're definatly going to go purchase the Gentle Leader. Thanks for the video on it, and we'll be checking out your other videos too!
Nikkoli110 3 years ago
Only other thing I would add, is to attach the leash to the collar in addition to the gentle leader as a safety. When I first used the gentle leader on one of my dogs, of course he resisted, he was able to slip it over his head and got loose. Fortunately he didn't realize he was "free" and I was able to rehalter him. From that point on I've always attached the leash to both the gentle leader and the collar as a safety.
Foxtrot2260 3 years ago
If the GL is fitted correctly -- high and very, very snug at the back of the neck -- this kind of back-up attachment is not needed. The neck strap should be so snug that you can barely fit one finger underneath. Because of a dog's anatomy, it will NOT choke or hurt the dog. Enjoy!
Velenovsky 3 years ago
I love my gentle leader for my American Staffordshire Terrier. He is so strong and he doesn't pull at all. Though it pisses me off when people say its a muzzle. My dog doesn't bite. ;[

my 8 month old lab/boxer female,is getting very aggressive.we're trying to do different things with her.we cant take her for walks, cause she flips out.one minute, walks nice, the next minute will growl, jump on us,bite us..etc. will this gentle leader stop her from jumping, and biting us? or only a prong or slip/choke collar correct that?

Sounds like you may need to invest in puppy classes or a behaviorist.
Foxtrot2260 3 years ago
I have tried almost everything to get my dog to stop pulling and I thought I would never use a chocker but they did work for my dog for a bit but then she went to pulling so hard that her eyes went red so I moved to trying out the gentle leader harness but she still pulled and was coughing when she did. The only thing that works for her is getting her to pull a tire which she loves but it would be nice if I could walk her without having to do this; do you think this collar would work for her?
MegoSamaLadySir 3 years ago
Using a collar like this stopped the pulling, but my dog is so distracted with trying to get it off that he won't walk at all. When he does walk he does nose dives into the street/grass/dirt trying to get it off. He is a cavalier so his short nose and big eyes make it especially uncomfortable for him. How can I make my dog more comfortable in this and how do I wean him off of it in the future?
DarcyAndEmma 3 years ago
My dogs did the same thing when I first started using the leader. I started using it in the house to get them used to it. It took them a few days, but now they love it. Makes walking much more enjoyable.
Foxtrot2260 3 years ago
I can't say enough great things about this collar! I have a German Shepherd-Boxer mix 2-year-old dog who is very excitable and has been almost untrainable. Choke collars & obedience training only had mild success. He still lunged and dragged when on a leash. With our first walk tonight on the Gentle Leader, he flipped out a bit, but for the most part, walked beside me and never once pulled, dragged me or lunged. AMAZING! Wish I'd bought it long ago!
suebeehoney70 3 years ago

Buddy did try to get it off when we got home :-)
covertoons 3 years ago
I love this harness, but my dog has an incredibly hard time adjusting to it! We got it when he broke a leg (he was harness trained and was straining on the harness as he was recovering) and it was fantastically useful... he just can't stand it, so it's a mixed blessing.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
So you prefer to force a dog to walk nicely rather than train it?
pupscouts 4 years ago
Evidently you don't understand how dogs work; it forces the dog as much as choking them with a regular collar does.
Saphanbaal 4 years ago
That would matter if I used a choke chain to train with but I don't. I'm a full-time trainer so I have a pretty good idea of how dogs work. I teach loose leash walking from the very beginning and it often takes less time than getting a dog used to a GL.
pupscouts 4 years ago
It took my American Staffordshire Terrier two days to get use to his. Some people need them for bigger dogs and espically when I got mine for six doillars. I can't afford a good trainer. My dog loves his. The first day he wanted it off but he is use to it and love to see it. I don't even have to get him to come. He is allways sitting and ready to go when he sees it. I allways don't have to use it for my other American Staffordshire Terrier anymore. He stopped pulling after a week of useing it.
NyappyDinosaur 3 years ago
The gentle leader is a "training tool" to get the desired behavior. It works and everyone is happy, what's what's wrong with that?
Foxtrot2260 3 years ago
Because the dog isn't "trained" and it will never be trained to walk nicely with one on. GLs do nothing to work toward the goal of a trained dog. They're a management tool- not a training tool- and as such, if that's what you want, fine, but don't call it training.
pupscouts 3 years ago
It can be used either way! An owner can use it for lifetime management OR can use the GL for control WHILE they reinforce the dog for polite walking beside them. Then, as another poster mentioned, you can fade the use of the GL. So - it serves both purposes. I should know - I learned from the inventor himself!
Velenovsky 3 years ago
It's the training that is training the dog, not the GL. My problem with it is that it gets in the way of training- you work with the dog with it on but once it comes off, you're back to square one and then have to start the training again without it since dogs don't generalize.
You may as well start with a regular leash- in my experience, it takes a lot less time.
