"While not all may rise to the level of genius, excellence is, indeed, mostly a matter of hard work."
...I Don't Agree! You can practise for 30 years but if your hands and fingers don't have the inborn subtle dexterity you can't develop it - and if your mind can't grasp and interpret complex musical notation then it can't be channeled and translated through your fingers either!
Why did JOHN McLAUGHLIN ever bother to take up the GUITAR since he seems to spend most of his time trying to make it sound like some other instrument, someone please buy him either a SAXOPHONE, or maybe a SITAR!!!!!!
@BARKINGattheMOON100 What the fuck are you talking about? Does the guitar in this recording not sound like a guitar to you? Next time you post, ask yourself if you have anything to say; it might save you some time and embarrassment, assuming you have enough sense to be eventually realize you said something cringe-worthy.
I taught guitar for 24 years (60+ students/week), incl. 3 years @ U Miami when Jaco, Pat Methany, Bruce Hornsby, Dixie Dregs, etc were there. People use terms like genius or freak to justify their own lack of accomplishment. It's not rocket science: practice/study 15,00-20,000 hours, have great curiosity, learn to trust your impulse & intuition, study the great players and composers, realize your personality/ego is bullshit... live life completely. (my teacher was McLaughlin's student).
Your point is well-taken, but I think your tone is a bit harsh. If you mean that people limit their own potential by mistakenly imputing some superhuman ability to those of great accomplishment, then I agree. As a professor of art and aesthetics (and a musician), I'm often saddened by my students imprisoning themselves within misconceptions about their talent or ability. While not all may rise to the level of genius, excellence is, indeed, mostly a matter of hard work.
@willmercury Your a little to articulate for most YOUTUBERs ,.....................today my friend, exellence is a matter for the very small group that persue it at all costs, regardless of the critisizms of the conformists that measure their own ability by what the man next to him is doing, or how great the demand for the pop material is at that moment, they will never understand this,...and they very well should not,.........Its not for them.....now is it?......

@bogdank100
What do you say to a man who shows us the dividends of devoting his ENTIRE life to the exploration of guitar mastery and boundless composition?....
"THANK YOU VERY MUCH, JOHN MCLAUGHLIN" comes to mind.
John continues to show us the way to following our hearts.
-Thank you again, John.
And thanks to the poster!
