What an amazingly talented individual, He's such a great guitar his chord knowledge is so vast, it baffles me trying to play along with him, and his lyrics, so raw, Elliott was truly one of a kind. so humble, with the smile of an angel
I think it's pretty common that bands with vocalists do this though. They're not in the studio doing a take of the song only for a few times to a couple days, they're on tour playing day after day and if their voice goes out or gets too strained, they're in some trouble.
are you talking about the fact that he tuned his guitar down a step cause he didn't feel that he needed it that way he just prefered it. even in the studio it was probably tuned down
@TheVictorians Yeah I think Mr.Misab is right. I read somewhere that Elliott used to use standard tuning, then I think his girlfriend around the time (JJ Gonson is think?) of his self titled album had herr guitar tuned down a step and then he just got used to it and later on adjusted his songs from roman candle to be in the right key.
@TheVictorians He always played acoustic tuned down and capoed when necessary. At one point he didn't own a guitar so he was always playing one belonged to a girl he was dating at the time. She kept it tuned down and he just got used to it.
@MrPelicanPants He didn't have perfect pitch, so he accidentally tuned it to D standard, thinking it was in E. So after a while he became accustomed to it, and when he realized it, he'd already written X amount of work on it, and just stuck by it.
its really amazing how he fills in all the parts on the guitar--what a talented man. notes-see the letterman version of this tune, it's fantastic...also anyone notice the lyrical genius in "this pain...ting never dries" as in "this pain"(his inner demons) are always wet to the touch-fresh and on the surface. he is so underrated and most people don't know him ala nick drake 10+ years ago.

Brilliant song.
A shame he felt he needed to tune down live.
