When are they going to stop portraying gay people as full of angst and self-loathing? I am a gay man. I am perfectly happy being a gay man. I do not hate myself because I am gay. This stereotype has got to go away.
@dmnemaine So I've seen the movie. And the thing is, this is a guy who is full of angst and self-loathing, and it has nothing to do with him being gay-- and he doesn't get that, for most of the movie.
@dmnemaine i'm not making accepting the stereotype or anything. I'm genuinely asking because I want to know. Are you the exception? Most of the gay people I'm friends with are fine with it, like you. But why is there a stereotype?
There is the stereotype because there are prejudiced and bigoted people in the world who are doing everything they can to perpetuate the idea that gay people are sub-normal. It goes hand in hand with the idea that being gay is a "choice", that it is "immoral", etc.
@dmnemaine oh, i see. yeah, i dont get why people are like that. But I think (like with racism which I get sometimes cos I'm brown), you just have to pity these people because they're the ones who are just ignorant and stupid. I mean, majority of people are good, right?
I don't think it's a question of "good" or "bad". I think it's mostly ignorance and fear. People tend to be afraid of what they don't understand. I also think religious indoctrination has a lot to do with it.
This, to me, is one of the most prolific movies about choice, about sexuality, and shows very strongly the idea that you should become at peace with who you are. The consequences of Tim's actions, show the devastating effects of trying to deny such a large part of yourself.
This movie is brilliant. All I can say - everyone who has a couple hours to spare should see this, especially anyone confused about their sexuality. Thanks for posting!
