This song always reminds me of me and my old girlfriend around 1987 or so driving in the middle of the night around Burlington, VT on a cold winter's night with her sleeping in the passenger seat next to me with only the two of us in the car as I knew our relationship was ending without acknowledging it.
There is somthing amazingly personal about The The ... and I think that is where the commentary below is going. This is my all time favourite band, an 'evergreen' so to speak. I'm glad that I don't see kids going around with The The tee-shirts, or cover versions by students, etc.. Best band ever without a doubt ... but let's keep them to ourselves!
What a FANTASTIC!!! combo Sinead O'Conner and Matt Johnson! When I heard this song years ago I just thought and hoped that it was going to EXPODE THE THE all over the world. This band has always been close to my heart and I just don't understand how the rest of the world doesn't get it... Someone please help us.
In an interview at the time, Johnson said O'Connor's rapid success and high profile had made her a bit paranoid that people were trying to use her reputation to boost their own careers: hence she refused to let the single be released or appear in the video.
Shame how qulity music goes by the wayside, eh? Should've been bigger, but I guess us folks in the States don't want to hear any political criticisms from 'outsiders' til we're on the balls of our ass...
