They're both fun cars. I sell Mazdas actually but a few of my friends have modified bugeyes and they are exhilarating to drive. I think the point you guys are missing is that this video is designed for your average consumer, someone who wants a fast and fun DD and the best bang for their buck. Cause let's face it guys, at the end of the day, it's all about money.

Always love the comparison tests and video which brings out tons of debates. But one I see lacking is any in the last 3 years. Mainly since subaru went to a stiffer suspension, better tires, and currently with the 2011's where I believe they are the best all around performers out of stock wrx's.
I think comparing the sti to the ms3 is not very fair.. the STi is a whole 10k more expensive.. so knowing Subaru of course its going to perform better.

@ksmuffin Fucking love it. I really have nothing bad to say about it EXCEPT its not AWD. Which is the only negative thing I've heard about it from anyone. I get in the mid 20s as far as city mpgs goes (provided I stay out of the turbo). And I get a bit over 30 on the hwy. As far as availability goes, I was looking like 300+ miles away and one just happened to show up at my local dealer. They didnt even know it was coming so I kinda lucked out.
the 08s were ehh cuz they were heavy and only had 224hp. the later ones have 265. mazdaspeed3 = wheelspin + tremendous understeer, and torque steer that wants to rip the wheel out of your hands

Honestly the only idiots that believe the WRX is still the only good option are nasioc.com nerds or people who live where there are only dirt roads. Because the only time the WRX is superior is off-road.
so, an interior that's "boring" is swaying people from a car with plenty of power, all wheel drive, traction control, less stiff (aka smoother) suspension, to the fwd Mazda, in my opinion, all wheel drive, .2 litres, and copious amounts of aftermarket upgrades more than make up for the "lackluster" interior.

It doesn't matter what they do to the WRX... new body, stiffer suspension, etc. They need to do away with the 5 speed glass tranny and go with a 6 speed. But they'll never do that, it'll look too similar to the STI for the average consumer who don't know about the other not so obvious things that is exclusive to the STI.
@SubaruWRXtreme Well that is pretty accurate since this is a 2008 WRX not a 09-present. The 08 has a engine with 224 bhp and I think 226 pound feet of torque. The 2009-present WRX has a 265 hp engine and 244 pound feet of torque. 08 WRX times are accurate with Edmunds, and 2009-Present models are 0-60 between 4.5-5.0 and quarter time around 13.5 seconds. I am not quite certain you know much about these cars even though your name gives off the idea that you do. Do some more research next time.

@SubaruWRXtreme I know these numbers and all these facts because I am a Subaru fan boy not because I them off the internet. I have an 09 WRX and that car performs amazing with a couple of bolt ons. The numbers are not suppose to be the only deciding factor but they give a pretty clear image what will happen if you put these cars head to head. If quarter mile is "gay as hell" what to do you consider a good way to compare. I also never said they have different engines btw.
WRXs are not made for 1/4 mile these are pocket rally cars, i see a lot of these "fast" cars but i destroy them everytime in the twisties, turns and corners. I never compare the 08 against the 09 both cars are fast in the right hands, my friend has a 2003 WRX and the reason i why i have my own 2009 WRX because i loved his car there is way more to Subaru than just 1/4 mile.

I was just informing you that this is an older model.
Edmunds is rather unreliable, I've never heard of a stock MazdaSpeed3 taking 6.1 seconds to go from 0-60. The best stock performance is 5.3, whereas most drivers take 5.5-5.7.
Give me that Mazdaspeed ANY DAY! Bang for the buck, there is none better in my opinion.
The only one that slightly beats it is the STI, but with the Mazda you save money on the sticker, on gas and on tires (4 wheel drive is a waste of money for 90% of us) and honestly on the road they a very even. Only off road does the STI become superior.
@AeQuitaS28 The 2011 WRX has gotten a serious suspension upgrade from the PoS that it had in 2010. So really, the 2011 WRX is a solid contender for the best compact fun car without going into the STI/EVO price bracket. And this hurts to say as I'm a mitsu fan (own a RA, had a 3000GT and a galant VR4 before that). The main advanatge the MS3 has in this class is the MSRP (real world price...well that depends on where ya live). Course be interesting to see what the ST does to that advantage.
WRX all the way. After a few mods it can be compared to an STI and blow the mazda speed away. Besides, the oportunities for mods on the WRX make it so much funner. Way too many people own Mazda's and think they are faster and better than they really are. They are quick, compact, and just another car, but the WRX and STI"s are a hobby passion and lifestyle.
@karsseboomh22 Hey i love subaru and if you want to pay the insurance for the STI more power to ya. I would rather not pay that much and just mod my WRX. The STI is $10,000 more from the start. Yea, it is faster off the lot, but modding my WRX keeps me busy and gives me a goal. I can put $10,000 into my WRX and make it plenty fast, fun and good looking and not have to pay out the nose for insurance. I love both just not willing to pay that much for the STI, but if you are cool man.
@Rhymesayer I did get quotes and found that because of my age, the year of the car, and style of the car the the wrx was cheaper for me to insure, plus the 10,000 more off the lot turned me away from the STI for now. Again i will say doing things to my wrx is plenty fun for me and will keep me busy. In the future if i want to upgrade i will. I fully understand that the STI is better, but the WRX is a fun car and more than enough for a lot of people. I love both cars so don't assume i am an ass
And the Sti has a MUCH better powerplant/tranny to start with. If you mod them equally, the WRX will never reach the potential of an Sti. You can safely run around 400WHP on the Sti without any major motor/tranny upgrades. Try that on a WRX and you will... well...

Has Subaru ever fixed the brittle gears of the WRX transaxle yet ? My transaxle in my '06 WRX that I purchased new in Dallas broke TWICE in less than 18K miles and one year old before I traded it for another make of performance car, and I am on my third new car(BMW 3series coupe)since then. Subaru would not cover it under warranty($6K cost), so they lost a customer for life, or at least several new car purchases.
I work for Mazda, and the '11 Speed3 looks pretty nice and is pretty fast, I don't like it because of the front wheel drive; you can easily lose control.
I love my 06 WRX, but the 2008 rex is such a bastard child of the Subie world. That body roll was absolutely horrible, body is plain, engine more plastic filled than the earlier years. Thank the car gods Subaru pulled the WRX/STi line out of that hole.
The subaru is the obvious choice for people who like to follow the herd. The mazda is the rarer less obvious choice where i come from! Plenty of scoobys on the roads here but ive yet to pass another mazda mps! Thats what i like about it! Both good cars but also both very different!
My thing is I wanna get my car down to a 5.0 0-60 while maintaining 30+mpg. To me that is all around performance. Once I've hit that benchmark, perhaps I'll throw a turbo in it and say bye to fuel economy, but with gas being over $4 per gallon where I'm at, who knows. Any way, with all that BS aside, isn't it just about having fun and loving what you drive, with respect to all other enthusiasts out there?

I love my 2011 Mazdaspeed 3, Now that being said i REALLY REALLY miss my 2001 WRX. Granted it was only a 2.0 liter and a bit slower. But it was amazing to drive in less than optimal road conditions. All things equal, and given how expensive service is on the WRX I think i'll stick with my Mazda... For now.
@iammrbmx4life STi puts both to shame on performance and interior design. Interior wise its much nicer to, but i believe they were trying to show case practicality rather than perfomance. I still pick a subaru over a girly mazda any day, even with its turbo and from driving a WRX in comparison to the Mazda speed 3 that a friend has, i find that the WRX DOES handle better around corners and the modifications for improvement on performance are easier as you can add stuff from an STi.
@FreeBuilDerProd I highly suggest you google Mazdaspeed Motorsports, Mazda's Le Mans Victory, The Mazdaspeed Ladder System, Star Mazda, Re Amemiya and even Skip Barber as starters before you make comments about race-winning subarus. Mazda has hundreds of major racing victories under their belt and had rally victories piling up with their 323 GTX long before the WRX was even a thought.
Subaru, inferior to Mazda? That would be a fine negative. Mazda's finest rotary engines pale in comparison to the flat 4s from Subaru. Subaru also has a racing pedigree. Does that make them greater? No, Mazda isn't crap at all. In fact, I almost bought a Mazdaspeed6 today off sheer impulse based on what I know about it. It was the 6spd too & not too many of those are around here. Those cars are among the finest I've ever seen from Mazda. Btw, Subaru's turbo EJ20 or turbo EJ25 produce about as much power as the Cosmo 20B Rotorx3. But reliability is a bit low on the Rotary though. Still, to be fair, Mazda RX-7 (3rd gen) is nothing to take for a joke. How do I know? Uncle owned one 6 years.

@plehdehgame I literally just bought the 2007 mazdaspeed 3 last night for about $14,000 with an extended warranty. Plus it was owned by the service manager at the dealership before I bought it. He put some time into it and added a few aftermarket parts onto it. But overall I got a great deal with reasonable mileage on it. I live in Denver, CO and mazda's tend to run slightly cheaper here for some reason. Hope this helps.
I hired a 5.0 mustang a few years ago and could not believe how slow and boaty it was not sure about the new 1 but the 2006 model was weak. my old version 4 sti was a space ship in comparison. anyway MPS is a animal looking to get one soon

@Pre00 I just ordered a 2011 wrx premium 3 weeks ago, I cant wait to get it. I currently have a 2000 subaru outback with 230,000 miles on it. im the orginal owner and it still runs as good as the day it was driven off the lot. I couldnt agree more about mustangs and the so called muscle cars, not only are wrx's and sti's beating these cars in a straight lines, they are blowing them away when it comes to handling and reliability.
2011 STI 0-60 4.8 sec 1/4 mile in 13.5 thats stock. The stock powertain can be tuned to 550HP at the wheels.
I have driven both the MS3 and an STI there is no comparison that much power in s FWD car makes them handle like shit., put them on a track, and see what happens, then add some snow to the mix.
Sorry your wrong...look it up. They are close, but the STi stock is a little quicker. And the STI can easily be tuned to put 450+HP to the wheels on the stock drivleline. Look on U tube, there are plenty of 3 sec runs to watch. I am not bashing the new Stang.. it IS a sweet car for sure. Looks good and goes fast too, but on a track or twisty road it would get hammered.

The reason I bougt a Subaru and not a Mazda was that Subaru can last me 300K + miles and the Mazda, maybe 190K. So I guess Subaru does give me more for my money.
@Bajacaliwave Mazda's can laster longer than 190k if you take really good care of them. I still see people with proteges that have well over 200k. Although Subaru is a very good brand. Their reliability is on par with Toyota and Honda. As a matter of fact Subaru has been named top brand for relability by consumer reports, and top brand for resale value by Kelly Blue Book. So I definitely see why you choose them.
06 Mazda 3 hatch I think right now on off the best hatches on the market for what you pay for, mines not stick :( but still rides if your looking for a cruiser it that looking to beat on some hondas or whatever your pleasure this car works,could only imagine a ms3

Massive difference,, Wrx is 215bhp Sti is 330bhp with everything upgraded seats, suspension, brakes, 6 speed gearbox Diff's, shafts, hubs, intercooler, turbo, injectors, ,, EVERYTHING is TOP end,, but its much much more cash..
someone above has given you the answer, I always loved subaru. its great car. but ms3 gives you more value for money. I had the 08 ms3. It was great car. except the fact it is only fwd and got big torque steer. otherwise it can carry some furniture from ikea besides being a sports car.
I think you gotta let the wrx grow on you but it is a ugly car inside an out, I have o6 mazda 3s hatch I love it, if I can get a speed3 I would. I think Subaru needs to start being a little more creative and start thinking out the box, not only are they losing to evos now the speed3 as well.

The MS3 is a FWD which steers a lot of people away. But I can say from experience, that even just the regular Mazda3 is fucking awesome in the turns, stock.
@erealpe13 I read up on cars a'lot. Mazda makes good vehicles. Although they can be expensive to maintenance. My personal suggestion would be to get a Subaru st or wrx. Subaru is on par with Honda and Toyota when it comes to reliability.

I just bought an 02 WRX wagon and I think it looks and performs so much better than the 08. I upgraded from on 04 Mazda3 S and I gotta say that I like the Subaru so much better (lol I know that they're not in the same class).

@SubaruWRXtreme Well that is pretty accurate since this is a 2008 WRX not a 09-present. The 08 has a engine with 224 bhp and I think 226 pound feet of torque. The 2009-present WRX has a 265 hp engine and 244 pound feet of torque. 08 WRX times are accurate with Edmunds, and 2009-Present models are 0-60 between 4.5-5.0 and quarter time around 13.5 seconds. I am not quite certain you know much about these cars even though your name gives off the idea that you do. Do some more research next time.

The numbers are not suppose to be the only deciding factor but they give a pretty clear image what will happen if you put these cars head to head. If quarter mile is "gay as hell" what to do you consider a good way to compare. I also never said they have different engines btw.

WRXs are not made for 1/4 mile these are pocket rally cars, i see a lot of these "fast" cars but i destroy them everytime in the twisties, turns and corners. I never compare the 08 against the 09 both cars are fast in the right hands, my friend has a 2003 WRX and the reason i why i have my own 2009 WRX because i loved his car there is way more to Subaru than just 1/4 mile.

Edmunds is rather unreliable, I've never heard of a stock MazdaSpeed3 taking 6.1 seconds to go from 0-60. The best stock performance is 5.3, whereas most drivers take 5.5-5.7.

@AeQuitaS28 The 2011 WRX has gotten a serious suspension upgrade from the PoS that it had in 2010. So really, the 2011 WRX is a solid contender for the best compact fun car without going into the STI/EVO price bracket. And this hurts to say as I'm a mitsu fan (own a RA, had a 3000GT and a galant VR4 before that). The main advanatge the MS3 has in this class is the MSRP (real world price...well that depends on where ya live). Course be interesting to see what the ST does to that advantage.

WRX all the way. After a few mods it can be compared to an STI and blow the mazda speed away. Besides, the oportunities for mods on the WRX make it so much funner. Way too many people own Mazda's and think they are faster and better than they really are. They are quick, compact, and just another car, but the WRX and STI"s are a hobby passion and lifestyle.

Yea, it is faster off the lot, but modding my WRX keeps me busy and gives me a goal. @Rhymesayer I did get quotes and found that because of my age, the year of the car, and style of the car the the wrx was cheaper for me to insure, plus the 10,000 more off the lot turned me away from the STI for now. Again i will say doing things to my wrx is plenty fun for me and will keep me busy. In the future if i want to upgrade i will. I fully understand that the STI is better, but the WRX is a fun car and more than enough for a lot of people. I love both cars so don't assume i am an ass

Has Subaru ever fixed the brittle gears of the WRX transaxle yet ? My transaxle in my '06 WRX that I purchased new in Dallas broke TWICE in less than 18K miles and one year old before I traded it for another make of performance car, and I am on my third new car(BMW 3series coupe)since then. Subaru would not cover it under warranty($6K cost), so they lost a customer for life, or at least several new car purchases.

My thing is I wanna get my car down to a 5.0 0-60 while maintaining 30+mpg. To me that is all around performance. Once I've hit that benchmark, perhaps I'll throw a turbo in it and say bye to fuel economy, but with gas being over $4 per gallon where I'm at, who knows. Any way, with all that BS aside, isn't it just about having fun and loving what you drive, with respect to all other enthusiasts out there?

I love my 2011 Mazdaspeed 3, Now that being said i REALLY REALLY miss my 2001 WRX. Granted it was only a 2.0 liter and a bit slower. But it was amazing to drive in less than optimal road conditions. All things equal, and given how expensive service is on the WRX I think i'll stick with my Mazda... For now.

@iammrbmx4life STi puts both to shame on performance and interior design. Interior wise its much nicer to, but i believe they were trying to show case practicality rather than perfomance. I still pick a subaru over a girly mazda any day, even with its turbo and from driving a WRX in comparison to the Mazda speed 3 that a friend has, i find that the WRX DOES handle better around corners and the modifications for improvement on performance are easier as you can add stuff from an STi.

No, Mazda isn't crap at all. In fact, I almost bought a Mazdaspeed6 today off sheer impulse based on what I know about it. It was the 6spd too & not too many of those are around here. Those cars are among the finest I've ever seen from Mazda. Btw, Subaru's turbo EJ20 or turbo EJ25 produce about as much power as the Cosmo 20B Rotorx3. But reliability is a bit low on the Rotary though. Still, to be fair, Mazda RX-7 (3rd gen) is nothing to take for a joke. How do I know? Uncle owned one 6 years.

@plehdehgame I literally just bought the 2007 mazdaspeed 3 last night for about $14,000 with an extended warranty. Plus it was owned by the service manager at the dealership before I bought it. He put some time into it and added a few aftermarket parts onto it. But overall I got a great deal with reasonable mileage on it. I live in Denver, CO and mazda's tend to run slightly cheaper here for some reason. Hope this helps.

Sorry your wrong...look it up. They are close, but the STi stock is a little quicker. And the STI can easily be tuned to put 450+HP to the wheels on the stock drivleline. Look on U tube, there are plenty of 3 sec runs to watch. I am not bashing the new Stang.. it IS a sweet car for sure. Looks good and goes fast too, but on a track or twisty road it would get hammered.

Their reliability is on par with Toyota and Honda. As a matter of fact Subaru has been named top brand for relability by consumer reports, and top brand for resale value by Kelly Blue Book. So I definitely see why you choose them.

@zooyork263 Most people will go with Subaru anyway simply because of it's 50/50 AWD.
The MS3 is a FWD which steers a lot of people away. But I can say from experience, that even just the regular Mazda3 is fucking awesome in the turns, stock.

@erealpe13 I read up on cars a'lot. Mazda makes good vehicles. Although they can be expensive to maintenance. My personal suggestion would be to get a Subaru st or wrx. Subaru is on par with Honda and Toyota when it comes to reliability.

The MS3 is clearly superior to THIS WRX.
I just bought an 02 WRX wagon and I think it looks and performs so much better than the 08. I upgraded from on 04 Mazda3 S and I gotta say that I like the Subaru so much better (lol I know that they're not in the same class).
Mazda3's and especially speed3's are real nice cars though!
