One question... Why is the flow aid necessary? What if we made washes with only distilled water? Also, was the flow aid you added already mixed with water? what ratio? In your other video you filled a bottle with 8 oz of water and 2 more ounces of flow aid. Is that what you did here?
Les, Please post more general application videos like this that can be applied to any project. Yours are the best! How about some extended wash, wet mixing or dry brush techniques? As far as procedure and brush stroke and so on?
Hi Les, really been enjoying your vids since discovering your channel - thanks for making them! My question is; what can I use instead of alcohol since i'm in the UK and I don't know where you can buy neat alcohol here - what kind of alcohol is it?
how do you do this with like black ore something that can go on a space marine to make him look less... polished or new . you know something to make them not look like this is there first fight make them look like theay have been throo hell.
@etc597 I don't use acrylics much but dry brushing to me always meant getting paint on the brush but very little by rubbing the brush or stipling paper or card with it till there was only a residue on the brush which can pick-out the raised highlights of a model.
For the verdigris I mix Orkhide shade, turquoise, and a little of skull white into a wash. I add a little more white to the mix for subsequent coats. I'm sure there are plenty of alternatives so long as you achieve a page green-blue colour. Hope that's of some help.
whats the ratio for the liquitex flow aid to water for the rust? and I dont have beasty brown so what GW paints would you recommend i use for the rust?
can i ask why you chose those paints over GW, Privateer press, and the others?
i want to buy a case from battle foam for my paint but i don't want to get one and end up using the crappy stuff i use now forever. i'd love dropper bottles but i don't know the difference because i haven't had the money to buy a whole set.
also have you tried the new Vallejo airbrush paint? a review of that would be awesome!
Personally i think it looked great altought for the rest effect id might add like a tiny drop of red just to give it a more realistic feel cause rust does have a slight red/orange tint to it but otherwise 5/5
@ERSWEXX3 That's pretty much it. Now it's a basic 1 color rust. If you want more detail it wont be as easy. For realistic rust you might look into using weathering pigments, Tamiya Weathering Compacts, Pastels. These give the best overall look.
Thank you very much! Was painting tyranid army and I needed more Badab Black when bottle were empty. Thanks for my mom who had alcohol because she is doctor :D !
I'm glad you like it! This tutorial is just to show how to make simple washes with paints for certain effects. If making GW washes was as simple as water down their paint I think everyone would do it. That is NOT the case. I have recipe on my site for washes you can make because the best washes are ink based :). The flow aid is mixed by liquitex instructions. 10:1 water/ flow aid.
This might sound like a completely noob question (indeed, it is), but what color exactly did you use for the bronze/copper parts? From the charts, colors like Dwarf Bronze (GW) look much darker, and I'd really like to have the same look as in your video. Thanks in advance :)
It's GW brazen brass if it's still in production, or Vallejo Game Color Brassy Brass. Yet another reason to switch to Vallejo Paints. They have the colors GW chose not to make anymore.
Nope, Brazen Brass doesn't exist anymore, and I've heard only negative things about Vallejo metallics. The other Vallejo products are all great, so I'll just see for myself
LoL that rumor was created by GW fan boys. Vallejo is of same quality if not better. To each his own. I've used both side by side and with no negative results. I don't know where people get their info from lol.
Great video, please keep them coming. I really appreciate you taking the time to make them. Have you tried out the Vallejo Model Color "Patina Verdin" 70832, it's #202 on their color chart. I know Vallejo Game Colors are a bit more durable but holy crap their Model Color line rocks! Again, thanks.
Devlan mud would be darker, Flow improver of any brand should do the job, and the alcohol is rubbing alcohol 91% Isopropyl and available in the first aid section of most large stores such as Target, Walmart and most grocery stores.
No. Or we wouldn't have added the alcohol, just flow improver. Alcohol disrupts the paint pigment and makes them float longer. You will see the paint "go crazy" when you add a drop to the paint mix. Flow aid is just great stuff as it breaks surface tension for the paint to glide onto the model and off the brush easily. alcohol thrown into the mix with that makes for simple wash magic :)
There's a link for it on my site, in the tools section if you can't get it locally. It's made by Liquitex. But looking on the site I think liquitex is redesigning the package or something because it's hard to find. I get mine at Michael's Arts and Crafts.
Great video. I religiously check my subscription on youtube for your new videos. I am going to have to pick up this stuff. Is it linked at your web site?
I'm sure no matter what brand of flow aid fluid medium you use, as long as you follow the dilution requirements provided by the maker you should be fine. When making your own washes you can tailor it how you want.. I like thin personally but if you make a bottle of strong mix, then you can dilute for whatever job you need to accomplish. I'll be doing black and brown washes in a video soon. People love those colors as well as a flesh wash.
wht do you mean by alchol, just basic vodka ?

for dry brushing you just get it wet and then use a dry brush to soak up the unwanted paint or is this wrong? please tell me!
