man this was the best of times ...i will never forget them and the whispers were rocking on this song lots of people didn't know that this was them blowing........
and also, this song was out when CBS Debut Simon & Simon Starring Jameson Parker and Gerald MacRaney of Major Dad, Promise Land and Jericho and also, Knight Rider Debut on NBC Starring David Hasseloff of The Young and the Restless and Baywatch, the late Edward Mulhare, William Daniels of St. Elsewhere and Boy Meets World Fame and the voice of K.I.T.T. and Also Starring Patricia McPherson and the Sexy Chief Mechanic Bonnie Barstowe and we saw K.I.T.T. vs. KARR Part 1 as well
Now THIS is the song that will I always be etched in my memory as THE Soul Train theme song. I was born in '74, but my father was in the military, so I was basically overseas until February/March of 1980 i kindergarten. THIS was the song that signalled that Saturday Morning Cartoons were over and that the TRAIN was on its way! I was totally crushed when they switched to the O'Bryan version in '83.
"You and Me and ABC" "NBC Proud as a Peacock '80" "Looking Good Together CBS" "Now is the Time ABC is the Place" "NBC Our Pride is Showing" "Reach for the Stars on CBS" "Come on Along with ABC" "We're NBC, Just Watch Us Now" "Great Moments on CBS" 1980-1983 promotional campaign
I absolutely LOVE THIS VERSION OF ST THEME!! I listen to it ALL THE TIME! Especially at work. the groove is just sooo nice...makes you move without 2nd thought! :oP
Of all the different Soul Train themes, I have two favorites: the original "TSOP" by MFSB with Three Degrees (1973-75), and this one by The Whispers, which I remember from the height of the Disco Era, and probably IMO the best years in the show's entire history.
@deenage That's right, we had TNN before it became The National Network, The New TNN and now known as SPIKE TV and The Disney Channel before it became a rip-off of TeenNICK
When this song was out, Casey Kasem hosted America's Top 10 and hosted the show for 12 years, and also, Paramount Television gave us Solid Gold, Entertainment Tonight, Family Ties and Cheers, and plus, the late Bill Cullen hosted Blockbusters for NBC and Child's Play for CBS and they were both from Mark Goodson Productions and also, Benson, The Jeffersons and One Day at a Time were still on the air and Hart to Hart was on abc and we still had Vega$ on abc, too
and also, 1980 gave us Magnum, P.I. Starring Tom Selleck, It's a Living on abc Starring Marian Mercer and also, 1980 gave us the most famous question EVER which was Who Shot J.R.? and plus, we still had Password Plus on NBC and Robin Ward hosted To Tell the Truth for syndication and Chuck Woolery and Susan Stafford was still hosting Wheel of Fortune and Nancy McKeon joined the cast of The Facts of Life as Streetkid Joanne "Jo" Polniaczek and we still had Diff'rent Strokes and Knots Landing
WOW BACK THEN CARTOON WAS THE BEST CARTOON 80s 70s CARTOON LIKE POP EYE AND SOO MANY ITS CRAZY BUT YOU KNOW IM SAYIN LOL SALUTE IM GONI TO UES THIS AS MY THEME FOR THE FUNK JUICE SHOW LOOK OUT IM GOIN TO PLAY THIS SOON FUNK UP
Love this theme to one of the great time capsule shows. I was born the year they were using this theme. Also elsewhere on the tv dial, another classic show, Charlie's Angels was in it's last season.
@vp200 You're right about that, and during the 80/81 Season, Tanya Roberts replaced Shelley Hack and the show saw the ratings drop bad and also, Happy Days saw the 1st Season w/o Richie and Ralph, Laverne & Shirley moved from Milwaukee, WI to Hollywood and the Final Season of L&S didn't Feature Cindy Williams as Shirley and Michael McKean and Lenny and so, it was Laverne & Squiggey and Mork & Mindy was in its 3rd Season
1980 was also at that time Michael Jackson's Off the Wall was one of the top albums of while the US Hockey team wins the gold medal in winter olympic games in Lake Placid NY, and rookie sensation Magic Johnson battle with Julius Erving known as Dr.J led the Los Angeles Lakers over the Philadelphia Sixers to a NBA title and the Philadelphia Phillies led by Mike Schmidt and Pete Rose beat George Brett and the Kansas City Royals in six games 4-2 to win the franchise first ever World Series title.
This was a cool theme by The Whispers, during the time this song was out, we still had Diff'rent Strokes, The Facts of Life, Trapper John, M.D., The Jeffersons, One Day at a Time, Silver Spoons, Smurfs, Pac-Man, Superfriends, Scooby-Doo was still on abc, Bugs Bunny and Road Runner were still on CBS, Match Game was on syn.m, Richard Dawson was still hosting Family Feud, Jim Perry was still hosting Card Sharks, Jack Barry was still hosting The Joker's Wild and BULLSEYE & 3-2-1 Contact were born.

1980 truly does represent the blending transition from the 70's to the 80's. I can hear both decades in this.

Yeah I can still hear some '70s-esque soul-like sound in this also.
