Music for Prague 1968 was Husa in his genius prime. Incredibly challenging piece to put together - but oh so worth it. It can only be truly experienced live. There are only a handful of wind ensembles and conductors that can do the piece justice. The inspiration for the piece was powerfully tragic, but equally powerful was the art the came from Husa's pen.
Ah, this was definitely an influential piece for me. It was this and Quartet for the End of Time that really changed my mind about contemporary music!
I love listening to this movement, but it's SO much cooler when you are actually playing it, and can hear all the parts get passed around inside of the ensemble.
I love this piece! I heard it a couple of days ago from the Rutgers Wind Ensemble on Feb, 27. They were incredible. They had the best low brass sound I've ever heard and the upper woodwinds were so in tune the piece sounded perfect! I almost hated being in the audience because the music was so powerful I wanted to play it, however, I don't think I could choose which part I'd want to play: the upper woodwinds, low brass, percussion, the middle countermelody. It is so intriquit and euphonious!
its not very Agressive as it should be and there should be a clarinet solo not soli. This is the 4th movement of this song for people that dont know.I have heard this song played by the North Shore Concert Band and it was amazing. You have to have your fingers moving like crazy for this piece. Overall its good.
my band played this song last year and we did such a good job im soo proud! =] its an amazing song to due its incredibly hard to! i <3 music for prague lol!!!!!!! =]]]]]
This is the song my band (Spring High School) played on our tape for Midwest - AND WE ARE PLAYING THIS YEAR IN CHICAGO at the "featured" time slot!!! It was really cool to be a freshman and play this piece. I didn't like it at first, but now I think it is freaking awesome. I'm just sad that our amazing seniors from last year can't go... (the timpani sounds slightly out of tune at 5:36-ish...maybe it's just me...)
That's awesome. I heard it last year at the Music for All National Festival (by Cypress Falls, I think) and it was really cool. I'll also be performing at Midwest (Lockport).
When I was a member of the C Leon King HS Band, we played this piece at District and State Band Contest achieving straight superiors. That was in 1971, if my memory serves me. I find myself today (Sept. 7th, 2008) in Prague and have just made a round trip in time. I attended a concert by the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and listened to this amazing piece of music. To be in Prague and to hear it performed was like a pilgramige for me.
This is a really extraordinary piece of music. I heard it a couple of days ago performed by a really good orchestra. This kind of music makes you feel shocked. Husa created a prime exemple of political music.
also, much of the rhythmic and harmonic counterpoint in the middle section of this mvt. did not feel properly accentuated. Surely this can't be Eastman... they've sounded MUCH cleaner than this.
not trying to rag though, because i'm planning on going there for grad school (lol).
i personally thin that this version is a lot worse than the CD jenkins gave us and its both the Eastman wnid ensemble thats soo weird butt othwerwise this song is amazigg i love it=]]
this is only part of the 3rd and the 4th mvmt of prague the first 2 arent in here. my band played sea drift last year and prague this year and i like prague better by far
Doing this at Montclair right now!

3rd movement and 4th eh? The 3rd to 4th Movement segue in my opinion is the most epic entrance of any piece of music created... if done well. :-)

this recording sounds very, VERY sloppy...

this is one of the toughest songs to get correct like through the fire and the flames on expert in guitar hero three
Mason Highschool played it spring of 2008 and they sounded slightly better than this but thats the way the song is supposed to be
