@koryuhoka / @tarsonis10 yes, it is a shorin ryu kata. not all 4 branches practice it. it is practiced in some kobayashi ryu schools but not all. it's in matsubayashi ryu, etc. shuri te and tomari te are not strictly shorin ryu. gojo ryu is not shorin ryu, it is (traditionally) the "hard" (not difficult, hard as in not soft) style of okinawan karate. uechi ryu is a newer style (matsubayashi ryu and matsumura orthodox are "newer" too). check out "okinawan karate" by mark bishop for more details
I am very curious to know what the technique is with the hand open and thumb down. I see this a lot in Shorin Ryu. Can anyone give a plausible bunkai for this technique?
@IEKUKATAKA block & grab. most systems don't separate the two movements, leading one to assume that it's an open thumb block, which is dangerous. in the passais, it can be an automatic grab (and pull) but practice should be done as a shuto opening to open mouth technique (to simulate the grab)
@Battoubro - This branch of Shorin Ryu is from the Higa Family and it is named Kyudokan. Also, this Unsu is much older than Shotokan's version... so it is not an "equivalent of Shotokan's".
@Koryuhoka There many styles of karate and many styles of okinawa karate but there are no diffrent styles of "Shorin Ryu" that im aware of. There is Shorin Ryu, Goju Ruy, Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu, Kempo, Uechi Ryu, Shuri Te etc. If that master teaches katas from diffrent styles thats ok. But UNSU is not from SHORIN RYU.
Hmm Interesting, Ever seen Wansu as performed by Students of the man who brought Karate to America...O'Sensei Robert Trias? It is a Blue Belt Kata but as a Black Belt it's one of my Favoriets(incredible Power)
The Robert Trias Kata do interest me although it's been a while since I've looked at any of them, the most interesting was Seipai, it had a much older look and feel to it than the current ones practiced by Goju Ryu and Shito ryu. Are they posted anywhere on here? I would be keen to take another look.
it may have been Dan Enn Sho that I saw demonstrated, it was a long while ago, it looked like a version of Seipai (Naha-Te Kata of Higaonna) although looking at the Dan Enn Sho kata on youtube it is now looking like a very slight resemblance, so I may be mistaken.
Ahww Dan Enn Sho is a beautiful Kata, I have not learned it as my Sensei has Forgotton more Katas then I know. Choki Motobu said you only need to know one Kata and that is Naihanchi(Iron Horse) I know 10 Katas in our system but my favoriet is Nandansho(Difficult Victory) I believe each Kata was Pioneered by a different body type and possibly Sex. Some Katas just "fit" you ,ya know?
Nandansho is known as Niseishi in my system, it is from the Naha area of Okinawa Sakiyama, Kuniyoshi, Aragaki & Higashionna all did versions of it, probably Chinese Lohan Chuan origins, rather than White Crane as many believe these days, Niseishi is a personal favourite of mine as well. Nandan Sho appears to preserve some of the older ways of doing the kata.
Watered down? Absolutely not! This is one of the truest lineages in existence today. There is so much watered down kata out there that it makes the real thing look watered down.
yeah my Uncle is a master in this form of karate his a 7th dan black belt he founded a school but didn't make not so many student enrolled though so he had to shut it down and left for U.S.A.
Unzu or Unsu or Unzo was adapted to the Okinawan feeling by master Kanken Toyama, has its origins in the Shaolin temple of Honan, Out of the 106 original movements, only 52 remain, as the others were considered too bombastic.
Not Unsu - Wanshu.
Very well done!

There is an Okinawan equivalent of Shotokan's Unsu?
Interesting... I learned something new.
Which branch of Shorin-Ryu is this?

@tarsonis10 - umm, yes! This is Shorin Ryu. There are many lineages and they don't all contain the same kata. But you already knew that... right?

@tarsonis10 - Any kata that are from Shuri Te or Tomari Te are Shorin Ryu kata. This is not a Naha Te Kata.
Is there someone else that can chime in?

I may be wrong. You may be right. But I believe it is Shorin.

i'm not familiar with Sepai. There are a list of our Katas on wikipedia under shuri-ryu maybe you can translate the name there.

Nice Kata, thanks for posting, to me it looks like an adaption of Wansu rather than Unsu? Is this the kata that is also known as Koryu Unsu?

The Okinawan Unsu is a very old version so nothing acrobatic or large mouvement.
