Im sure this is a dumb question to some people, But why are engines 4, 8, 12 cylinders? Why not a odd nuber like 5 cylinders? Or still, Even numbers like 6, or 10 cylinders?

@mickeydamon There have been engines made with virtually any number of cylinder combinations that you can dream up under 29 and probably some with more than that.

@mickeydamon There are engines with odd numbers of cylinders, but when you build one like that, you have to allow for the offsetting balance of the odd cylinder. On engines with even numbers of cylinders, the rotating mass is usually spaced so that one cylinder offsets (balances out) the rotation of another. With an odd number of cylinders, you have to account for the rotating mass of the "odd" cylinder. Mercedes used to run a 5 cylinder, lexus and geo's have a 3 cylinder model.
