I find it interesting that people say he sounds like Gil Scott. Brother Gil never sang this much or this well. Jose was exposed to Gil for sure but I dont think he ever wanted to or tried to sound like Gil. He listened more to Nat King Cole and Joe Williams among others like Billie Holiday and Marvin Gaye. Gil Scott is important in terms of political content, NOT the art of singing. Scott has a new release btw which is covered in a recent NY Times article.
