This is a wonderful glimpse of the woman herself, and she is delightful. Her singing voice gives me chills, every single time. Thanks for posting this!
I just want to express thanks to those who knew her more recently than I, and who care so much that they take the time to share their memories that will carry forward memories of Jane Froman. She was a magnificent person, a great human being, courageous beyond belief - in addition to being the greatest popular singer of her era!
When I was a senior at the University of Missouri School of Journalism Jane was in the Medical Center being treated for pain killer addiction. She wasn't a drug addict but with so many years of powerful pain killer she needed help. I think everyone in town knew she was in the hospital--including we students--and was worried sick about her. All the doctors and nurses said she was just wonderful. Never complained, never asked for special treatment, lovely to everyone.
Ellen Jane. Such a truly All American girl. Grew up in Columbia, Missouri and in 1948 came back to the University of Missouri to reign as "Coming Home Queen." She rode in an open car with the Homecoming Queen and Court and they all just loved her. She was so down to earth and energetic and sunny, not an aloof star in any way. She retired to Columbia and married the Columbia Tribune's publisher and was beloved to her passing. An incredibly courageous woman.
I watch this wonderful presentation , showing the upbeat, positive side of the truly heroic Jane Froman, and realize - with great sadness- how many generations have not known, or will never know, of her magnificent voice, indominitable courage, generous and humanitarian contributions to all people with physical/ emotional handicaps.. I hope this video will remain on YouTube forever, inspiring new generations to ask WHY?
Bless her heart, this clip is from around 10 years after the plane crash, and you can still see her living with the after effects. Her gait is abnormal from the injuries and leg braces. One of her scars can be seen on her right forearm as she signed in.
She showed remarkable strength and drive to resume performing after her body having been so thoroughly shattered.
Oh,so nice! To my images of her marvelous voice, extraordinary courage and humanity, this clip adds clear depth of vision of Jane's vivacious beauty, robust laughter,self-efficacing demeanor and her poignant, heartfelt words to Hal: "I'm so glad you didn't make it." Thanks so much for this!
Arlene had known her years earlier when the two were working in radio in NYC in the mid-'30's, and had actually done speaking lines for Froman before she got her stutter under control.
For anyone who may not know, she wore braces under the long skirts as a result of the accident and had a tremendous operatic style voice despite protesting to the contrary.
If you are watching closely [and perhaps it helps if you know what you are looking for], at about .18-.23 you can see the deep scar on her right forearm. I understood that she always wore something to cover it when she was performing, and I'm a little surprised to see her letting it show this much on WML? Glorious voice.
Thank you for the info. I must admit, I was amazed to see Jane Froman. I saw the film when I was a child, and my mum often talked about her. Quite eerie to see her.
Block also had another 'boundary problem', i.e., he couldn't restrain himself from trying to take over for/upstage the Master of Ceremonies. BTW, there are a number of Youtube clips of Jane Froman singing: Just search by her name.
Thanx for posting. I had never seen a clip of Jane Froman anywhere until now. Here is a clip of one of the things that Hal Block did on live TV that aggravated Gil Fates to distraction: Block used to plant big wet kisses on distinguished mystery guest lips. Fates mentioned in his book (if memory serves me) that Block slobbered over Ethel Barrymore and Sister Kenny, apparently Jane Froman as well.
What a lovely lady and great human being. I love her singing and play her cds quite often. Thank you for sharing this clip.

Beautiful singing voice and tremendous strength of character. Trust Arlene of course to point out the latter.

Do you know when this dates from?
nitramgnal 3 years ago
Without double-checking, March 3, 1953.

Oh, drat: My bad: March 1, 1953!
nmzurrah 3 years ago
Which probably explains why Bennett Cerf was away. He typically could be found in the warmer Caribbean climes around this time of year.

The date -- March 1, 1953 -- explains this, that is.

As far as I can tell, there is no WML clip here featuring a Barrymore - I'd sure like to see one.

Drew too young. Ethel's kinescope apparently got erased and recorded over.

I missed this comment about Froman clips. Several clips from her television show have been posted on Youtube by VideosTimes2.
